For Rutgers, Almost ... Again
For a while on Saturday, Rutgers looked as if it might have shrugged off the mistakes of its recent past, going up 27-7 on the road at Illinois. But this is Rutgers, so a 33-30 overtime loss comes as little surprise. "Go ahead and say it: Same old Rutgers," wrote Tom Luicci of the Newark Star-Ledger.
On the surface, yes, but there were offensive highlights that should give Knights fans pleasure: QB Ryan Hart threw 44 times without an interception, racking up 342 yards and two TDs. All-purpose back Brian Leonard rushed for 128 yards and a score. But the defense - Greg Schiano's forte - gave up 17 straight to an Illini team with a new quarterback, and kicker Jeremy Ito missed four of seven field goal attempts. Sure, it wasn't exactly a loss to Directional State U., but this was a game that Rutgers controlled but could not finish.
