Top black assistant coaches to watch

AOL Black Voices, an internet portal devoted to African-American and black cultural interests and issues, recently published a list of the top ten black assistant football coaches who may someday become major college head coaches. Some names, like Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon and Florida assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, should be familiar to most fans, as they have surfaced on numerous head coaching short-lists over the years. Others, such as Connecticut offensive coordinator Norries Wilson, may be less familiar to many.

Here's the entire list:

1. Randy Shannon -- Defensive Coordinator, Miami
2. Charlie Strong -- Assistant Head Coach & Co-Defensive Coordinator, Florida
3. Tyrone Nix -- Co-Defensive Coordinator, South Carolina
4. Vance Bedford -- Defensive Coordinator, Oklahoma State
5. Mike Locksley -- Offensive Coordinator, Illinois
6. Fred Jackson -- Associate Head Coach, Michigan
7. Ron Prince -- Offensive Coordinator, Virginia
8. Michael Haywood -- Offensive Coordinator, Notre Dame
9. Marvin Sanders, Defensive Coordinator, North Carolina
10. Norries Wilson, Offensive Coordinator, Connecticut

There is also a deep pool of "other names to know", a sort of honorable list of other respected black assistants.

You may want to keep this list handy in December, when the coaching carousel starts spinning and the parlor-game speculation about short-lists begins.
