Tar Heels in the Tire Bowl

North Carolina, the fifth ranked team in the ACC, accepted a bid today to play in the Continental Tire Bowl against an undetermined Big East opponent. The third Continental Tire Bowl takes place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on December 30, 2004 with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff time.

Coach John Bunting gushed the way a man who has saved his job is inclined to

"We are thrilled to represent the state of North Carolina in Charlotte at the Continental Tire Bowl,” said head coach John Bunting. “This is a fitting reward for a team that has battled all season long, believed in themselves and never quit. After meeting today with Raycom officials, we know our players, coaches and fans will be richly rewarded.”

The full text of the press release is available on the Tire Bowl web site.

Somebody in this league who has a shot at the BCS right now, two weeks before season's end, is going to wind up playing either (a) before Christmas or (b) in Boise.

And given that the only place UVa fans will travel for bowl games is Atlanta, Tech had better win its next two. There's a decent shot that we could be playing win/Sugar or lose/Boise in Miami next weekend.
