ACC, Navy sign agreement with Congressional Bowl

The ACC has signed an agreement to place one team in the inaugural Congressional Bowl, to be played December 20th in Washington, DC.

News of the ACC's commitment enabled ESPN to sign an agreement to televise the fledgling bowl, which is slated to be held on Dec. 20 at either RFK Stadium or the new Nationals Park. Metcalf said the D.C. Bowl Commission can now move forward with filing an application with the NCAA for certification as a postseason contest.

The NCAA requires prospective bowls to have guaranteed opponents, a TV contract, venue and a letter of credit.

According to Capital sports writer Bill Wagner, the Congressional Bowl will offer a guaranteed $1 million per school in the first year. The organizers hope to pair a service academy annually against an ACC or at-large opponent.

A Conference USA affiliation had been tossed around in previous reports.

The agreement could be the death-knell for an oft-rumored Baltimore bowl game, as the area is an unlikely host for two bowl games.

The 2008 ACC representative will face-off against Navy, who have already reached an agreement with the new bowl, presuming the Midshipmen are bowl-eligible.

    Congressional Bowl?

I bet the K-Street lobby firms are plotting a serious bidding war for naming rights.

What's next, the Sarbanes-Oxley Oversight Bowl?
The Internal Revenue Service Cornhole Bowl?

    Sheesh.

Come on, people, it should be inspiring for College Football Bowl Politics to mesh with National Politics...just imagine, the average level of morality everywhere else in the nation will increase...

    What's not to like? :-)

    Well, it certainly fits...

The presedential election is a lot like the BCS championship...

    A sham...

The ACC won't stop until it has guaranteed bowl slots for every school in the conference that fields a football team . . . . and Duke too.

    You know...

Why stop at college ball for consolation games...

State HS atletic associations should begin approving bowl games for the top 2/3 of each district as long as they qualify with a winning record...

And the NFL should begin playing feel good games for those proffessional teams that can't get in the playoffs as well...

I mean at both of those levels the players work hard too and should be rewarded for their "effort" as well...

    Right?

    Why stop at football?

Why don't we go ahead and approve "bowl" type consolation games for Basketball teams that don't make the NCAA or NIT tourneys...

Baseball, soccer, lacrosse, water polo, volleyball and other team sports should do the samer at ALL levels...

Hell, we should even start a Consolation Olympics for the folks who can't make the regular one...

    Better yet...

Let's just eliminate the compettitveness from sports all together...

No more of this "winning' stuff...

    They're ALL winners for trying...

    What a load of crap!!!!

Oh, come on, Gator Hippy, show a little heart. What's wrong with throwing $2 M at a couple of schools which might not get to play post season otherwise. Give their SR's a last hurah.

Just imagine: If Air Force & Navy both have a particularly good year (9 or more wins) in the same season, and they wind up in other bowls with bigger pay-outs, we could witness a game between 4-8 Duke and 2-10 Army. Of course, if 2-10 is a little too substandard for the powers that be, they can always bring in a LA Monroe or W KY.

Yeah, that should be fun to watch...

    That's what I'm saying, Zac...

What about all the millions of HS seniors that will never strap on their hats again?

Surely they deserve a last hurrah...

What about all the rest of the college & prep seniors in other sports or the ones on those sub-bowl record teams or teams that don't make the playoffs in their respective sports?

Surely they deserve a last hurrah...

Or the few hundred NFL players on teams that don't make the playoffs and might not make the cut or retire?

Surely they deserve a last hurrah...

D-1 CFB is the only high level competitive sport that continues to follow a YMCA "everybody Wins" attitude...

    It's ridiculous...

    The Congressional Bowl

This calls for a WEA-style top 10-list, so without further ado...

The top-10 things happening at The Congressional Bowl

    10) Larry Craig will be hanging out in the men's room, sitting with a "wide stance".

    9) Newt Gingrich will be there to proclaim the moral inferiority of "the other team" while not mentioning his own philandering.

    8) Mark Foley will be there with his cell phone, texting all of the players on the field. Well, maybe just the freshman and sophomores. After that, they're too old for Mark.

    7) Hillary Clinton will be trying to convince all attendees that the game should really be played at 3:00 am.

    6) John McCain will be there to remind everyone that he's not that old. In fact, when he was in college, the players started using the latest safety devices: leather hats. He will also be trying to convince people that "The Keating Five" was really a defensive backfield strategy.

    5) Barack Obama will declare football to be the province of "bitter" people.

    4) William Jefferson will be looking for a freezer to put "his" money in.

    3) The entire Kennedy contingent will be at the game having a beer. No, five. No, thirty...

    2) Tom Delay will be standing outside the stadium, selling tickets to the game, transfering the money equally to his re-election campaign and his legal defense fund, and pronouncing the moral inferiority of "the other team".

...and the #1 thing happening at The Congressional Bowl is:

    1) A football game will be played.

Two reasons to look forward to autumn: the start of football season and the end of the presidential election. :-)

Bad Ramblin Gator! Mixing politics and bowl games!

As has become tradition on fanblogs, we will now suggest alternative names for this newest of cheesy add-on bowls that no one will watch. However, it might out-sell the ACC championship game...

    The Congressional Bowl of Honor

The K-Street Insert Your Name Here for a Lot of Money Bowl(thanks, schmed...)

The 'Navy--It's not just a job, it's a bowl game' Bowl

The 'We were hoping to pair Army and Navy in a bowl game after they just played but thought that was pushing it' Bowl

    The Testify Before Congress Bowl

Okay, I'm dying here. Anyone else?

If we ever play in that bowl... I'll be swapping my season football tickets for season baseball tickets.

Ramblin'G, let's not forget somewhere in there, George Bush, Jr. will insist he be allowed to throw the 1st pitch…

    WarEagle, how's this one?

The Filibuster Bowl, where the term "under review" takes on a whole new meaning.

The Allan Greenspan Bowl (Don't you think there'd be a lot of "interest" in that one?)

Tell ya what, 1st & Nole, if Bowden's still coaching and that happens, get me a set of tickets, will ya?

Actually, I screwed that up. It should have been...

The Congressional Hearing Bowl, where "under review" takes on a whole new meaning, and

The Filibuster Bowl, where the term "delay of game" takes on a whole new meaning...

    ah fagetabout it...
