Air Force looking to reschedule Houston, FSU, Minny
Mark it down -- July 2008: The Air Force is walking away from a fight.
Yep... the service with the slogon "Aim High" is instead attempting to aim... not so high. Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun wants changes in the academy's football schedule and it looks like he'll get them.
According to The Denver Post, Calhoun has asked Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh to back away from future away games with upper-tier FBS teams from the first game of the season so that the Falcons can work their way into the season.
"Troy does not object to playing those teams, but not in the first game of the season," Mueh said. "We are playing at Minnesota in 2009 and at Florida State in 2012."...
"We need that first game to evaluate our team," Calhoun said. "In every other program in the country except at an academy, the players are on the institution's grounds all summer. Our players could come into preseason practice from summer assignments in Japan, Italy, Germany, Hawaii and elsewhere."
In other words, Air Force will be looking to cancel future road games with Houston (2010), Florida State (2011), Minnesota (2012), and Oklahoma State (2015) in favor of lower-tier FBS schools or FCS cupcakes.
This is just... embarrassing, but certainly isn't unheard of. I wonder what it will cost taxpayers to drop these scheduled games.
