Alabama to wear houndstooth jerseys

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team will wear commemorative jerseys against Ole Miss to honor the 25th anniversary of "Bear" Bryant's 315th win. The jerseys, which were designed by Nike, pay homage to the Bear's signature houndstooth hat by displaying a houndstooth trim on the collars of the uniforms. The jersey change marks the 11th time in Crimson Tide history the team has worn commemorative markings during a game.

For those Alabama fans wanting a replica jersey, Alabama will make replica uniforms available at the stadium and online.

As you can imagine at a program as tradition-rich as Alabama, this is creating QUITE a buzz among the fans.

“I think that this jersey is absolutely a thing of beauty," wrote one fan, dubbed Bama Fan in LA, on the TideSports.com Internet forum. “I wouldn’t mind seeing that jersey more often ... maybe all of the home games."

I gotta tell ya, I know it's a break from tradition, but I **LOVE** this uniform for Alabama. I would love to see them roll this out at least once a year.

What does everybody think?

Whats next why not honor "The Bear's" 312th Win! This is crazy soon will be honoring someone's arrival to a city, or when 'X' Person got their first haircut at a university! Thats silly! This is marketing run amuck!

Well, the 315th was pretty monumental, so *something* is in order and I'm not talking about commemorative tumblers of beer. It's all marketing, I'll give you that, but this is a great look for Bama. I would love to see this full time to honor the Bear.

I have to say, I am a student at Ole Miss, and it doesn't matter how much we hate the tide. Those uniforms look really good. I just hope they dont play better because of em :/

As much as I couldn't care less about what happens to the Tide, I've got to say that those jerseys are most awesome. I was there that fateful day watching my team go down, but at least I can say that I saw "315" in person.

Marketing?? I guess that's what they call it, maybe an UA allumi. They could put Bryant's name on dog poo and sell it. The fans would not be able to buy it fast enough!!

Q: What is the similarity between a Bammer fan and maggots?

A: They can live off a dead bear for twenty years.

    The jerseys do look nice.
However, worrying about uniforms is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Thats a cool, subtile way to honor the bear. I like em. I do think Auburn could go retro or something for one game, with the orange facemasks and short jerseys. All blue? I dont know about that, thats messing with tradition too much. Speaking of weird... I heard FSU is coming out in all black against Boston College. That'll be weird. Anyway... good luck tide rollers. We'll see you guys in a month.

    War Eagle!

i was at the ole miss game. too bad we didn't play as good as the jerseys look. i'm all about some tradition, but these things are bad. wouldn't mind seeing them when we play somebody big.

I wouldn't mind it one bit if this because THE official home jersey for all our games. Or at least for the Iron Bowl or other big events.

that jersey is absolutely beautiful. i dont buy into the whole 'tradition' thing that allows boring uniforms like penn st or alabama to roll out in 1940's style uniforms, just b/c they were successful in those. would they still be wearing leather helmets?

i think alabama needs a complete overhaul in the uniforms. they need a new helmet too, but one step at a time. go w/the houndstooth trim, and that is a classy and beautiful update of their look. do the same thing on the away jersey, use that houndstooth on the color, and go w/some crimson pants. that would look really sharp! of course, alabama fans would scream and shout and have a fit, but honestly, would red pants make any of bear's wins go away? would they have to give back any sec or national titles?

of course not. its a new era everywhere, incl alabama. why not let the new coach have a hand in creating a new tradition?

i can tell you this...i am a florida grad. i have always thought, subliminally, that all white road unis, or home unis for that matter, subliminally signal 'surrender'. teams just dont look intimidating in all white...as welll as just being boring.

as for tradition and it being the be all and end all...i would love nothing more if cpach meyer completely changes my gators uniforms. hell, go back to those beautiful throwbacks we wore against the tide earlier this year. he is, essentially, creatging a new era at the school, and there is no reason why he shouldnt be able to have his own distinctive look. same w/any school...incl. penn st. incl alabama. incl texas, tennessee, wherever you want to go. the uniforms have never won a game. they are m,ore something for tghe fans to get excited about. when you ignore this, a la joe pa, it feels like you are discounting the opinions of those who are interested in the uniform. so, at least have a pair of colored pants for road games, or for a solid home look. what can it hurt?

You know when you gotta a classic jersey when somebody like myself who doesn't care about anything pertaining to Alabama football would actually consider buying one of those. Maybe I'll wear it once a year during the Iron Bowl to show some support for Alabama to at least beat AU. Those jerseys are classic.
