Live elephant coming to Alabama sidelines?

The University of Alabama scoffs at your tiny, live mascot.

The Crimson Tide have already coughed up an elephant-esque contract to football coach Nick Saban, so expanding the budget for a new mascot shouldn't be out of the question, right? So it would seem.

During a joint session between the First Year Council and the SGA Senate, the two bodies passed a resolution that will research bringing a live elephant to campus during football games to add school spirit.

Take that Smokey, UGA, and Mike the Lion.

Hasn't anyone in Alabama ever seen that episode of "When animals attack" with the circus elephant killing everyone in a rampage. Those jokers in Bama got nothing to do but come up with dumb ideas like this. Famous last words of a Bama redneck right before he dies in a freak accident, "Hey watch this, bubba!"

I'll tell you one thing. You'll need more than a shovel and a wheel-barrow to keep up with it. Not to mention, what's up with all you GA pots, calling the AL kettles, "Black"? Trust me; when you're a native New Yorker like me, a suthunah is a suthunah; yawl all soundz da same ta me.

But seriously folks, I agree with GA Boy and War Eagle. The risks far outweigh the benefits in this case. You really need to have a well raised young animal, which, if it got a little too rambunctious wouldn't cause too much damage.

Elephants are both intelligent and extremely sensitive creatures. They have to be well treated and cared for. Not all of them are Circus Savy. A stadium containing over 90,000 screaming fans may not be a suitable environment for either the African or Indian variety. Since you can't cage one like you can cage Mike the "Lion?", I personally wouldn't recommend it.

Oh, Autigerman (Post 23), PA St has Nittney's. I don't know what a Nittney is.

    Zac (#24):

    Too true...

Elephants of both types are extremely difficult to maintain in captivity...

Along with the intelligence and sensitivity issues, elephants are also a familial species and do much better in capitivity when surrounded with others of it's kind or at least some type of non-threatening species as a companion...

    That being said...

    Why not a live bear?

It would cover one of the program's great coaches who in himself has risen to iconic and closely mascot fame between the nickname and the houndstooth...

A bear would be easier to keep in captivity with an environment similar to Mike' biome-like suedo habitat confines...

And a bear will more than likely fare better either on some type of restraining device with handlers or possibly a cart like transport also similiar to LSU's live mascot...

"Bryant the Bear" could be a financial windfall in marketing possibilities for the Tide...

AUTigerman: Leave it to old War Eagle Atlanta to know more about the Crimson Tide program than their fans do. Here's the story:

When the Tide was making all those Rose Bowl appearances back in the 1920s and 30s under Frank Thomas and Wallace Wade, some booster had purchased luggage for the players to travel with. The logo for the manufacturer of the steamer trunks was an elephant, and some folks in Pasadena saw that and naturally assumed it was the mascot of the football team, thus it became so.

I am liking the 'Bryant the Bear' thing though, Gatorhippy...

"During a joint session between the First Year Council and the SGA Senate, the two bodies passed a resolution that will research bringing a live elephant to campus during football games to add school spirit." The quad is not a part of Bryant-Denny stadium.

WEA means well. Sometimes he just doesn't know what he means.

"The elephant's association with Alabama dates back to the 1930 football season when the Crimson Tide was led by Coach Wallace Wade. There are two stories about how Alabama became associated with the elephant.

Officially, following the 1930 game versus Ole Miss, Atlanta Journal sports writer Everett Strupper wrote:

"At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity. It was the first time that I had seen it and the size of the entire eleven nearly knocked me cold, men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."

Sports writers continued to refer to Alabama as the "Red Elephants" afterwards, referring to their crimson jerseys. The 1930 team shut out eight of ten opponents, allowing a total of only 13 points all season. The "Red Elephants" rolled up 217 points that season, including a 24-0 victory over Washington in the Rose Bowl."

    SHA (#32 & #33):

I didn't mention anything about Bama changing their mascot...

I simply suggested they "officially" adopt what is already an "unofficial" mascot and icon of the Bama football tradition and legacy with my "Bryant the Bear" suggestion...

Which certainly makes more sense on both fiscal ends of expense/revenue from a business standpoint...

The "Bear" would be cheaper to maintain than an elephant and give UAt another marketing option to bulk up their merchandising revenue that would certainly be on level playing ground with Big Al; if Bryant merchandise didn't surpass the elephant all together...

While, admittedly, a "gator" is not exactly "cuddly" in it's real life form...

It can easily be softened up in charicature to appeal in a "cuddly" way; which has been proven by the sheer amount of revenue "Albert the Alligator" merchandise brings in annually for the university...

The same cannot be said for an algal bloom...

There is just no way around it...

And given that the costumed "Big Al' didn't appear until 1979...

It seems that Bama administration was on top of the marketing and merchandising trends that were beginning to grow and be capitalized on in every form of business in the late '70s...

    So really, SHA...

I would say that adapting mascots for marketing purposes is right up the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa's alley...

Seriously, "Bryant the Bear" would be a financial windfall for UAt...

How do you achieve "cuddlizing" algae so dense it chokes the life from marine species unfortunate enough to habitate its reaches?

    SHA (#44,46,47):

    Yes, I meant Gene, Sweetie...

And the submarine was christened the USS Alabama...

The title of the movie, Crimson Tide, is a play on the actual name of the sub (again the USS Alabama) coupled with the plot where international nuclear holcaust is bordered upon while Washington and Hackman vie for control over the release and detonation of a nuclear missle...

The under water nature of the submarine and its potential nuclear capability to become the initial bloom of "Crimson Tide" that would sweep across the planet as nuclear war spread...

SHA, sure the thread was about the idea of bringing a live elephant mascot into the stadium and I surely did suggest Bama adopt a live bear rather than an elephant...

    However...

I also pointed it out as an easier and more economically sound alternative for the university to adopt which; like the elephant or algal bloom used to lvoingly or figuratively personify the team; could be similarly adopted and used as an example, tribute and marketable personification to one of it's most iconic and beloved figures...

And as I said before, it wouldn't be the first time the University of Alabama added a mascot to capitalize financially...

However, you certainly do seem to be displaying your "superior" Bama history knowledge with the cut-and-paste description of the "elephant" moniker from the school's athletics web site and your immediate thought of a submarine movie as the origin of UAt's nickname...

Bryant the Bear would be proud...

Perhaps if the school opts not to follow my advice and continues to pursue the live elephant, we could come up with a new slogan in place of "Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer" or "Roll Tide Roll"...

    Maybe...

    Send in the clowns...

    TE (#62):

Not sure where the actual representation of the phrase "Roll Tide, Roll" with detergent and TP came from...

    BUT...

I do know that the phrase itself roots from UAt's "Yea, Alabama" song which actually was written by a UAt music student back in the 1920's...

So score one for the alumni...

I know the answer. Alabama came up with 'Roll Tide Roll' because they needed something to yell during kickoffs and 'War Eagle' and 'Go Dawgs go, Sic-em, woof, woof, woof' were already taken...

You know, something curious about 'Yea Alabama'. It calls out Georgia and Georgia Tech, but not Auburn. I feel insulted, but I think the sleight is because the song was written during the 40 year drought when the two teams didn't play. But what? They don't have new song writers around T-town these days?

And the line, "Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave". Why do you try to drown yellow jackets? Why not swat them like everyone else does? Why not send the Commodores to a watery grave? Because, after all, a commodore is a flag officer in the Navy, and who else more appropriate to send to this watery grave?

Anyone else's fight songs call out a particular rival in the lyrics? Auburn's doesn't. I know Texas A+M's Aggie War Hymn is one big obsession over Texas--one that borders on creepy!

Georgia's is "Battle Hymn of the Republic" That's really strange that they'd have to use that old song considering what kind of musical talents comes out of Athens, Georgia.

Wouldn't you like to see them commission The B-52s or REM to compose a new Bulldog fight song?

    GH #59

"you have once again RAN"? Wrong tense and YOU are a good writer?

I discussed the topic at hand on my last post, a live elephant on the sidelines. Stupid to think that's what anyone was talking about. It was supposed to be an elephant on the quad, big difference.

I didn't see anything in post #53 about elephants on the sideline. Perhaps you need to get back on track. You think?

Funny how you trash me for doing the same damn thing that you do. I would say go post on a Florida thread but no one cares enough about Florida to even start one.

    Long live Suburban The Gator.

    #66,

The last thread dealing with Florida had to do with our quarterback being up for the Heisman. You're only thread has to do with Alabama bringing in a f*cking three-ring circus act to your school to boost team spirit. Way to go Alabama

    Sweet Home/#41 (.):

"Crimson Tide" based on a f&%$n movie that came out in the 90's?????????

I'm call'n imposter here--you can't possibly be that f&%$n stupid, and computer-literate at the same time.

You're the best poster Auburn Fan could ever hope for...too good to be true...gotta' be an Auburn Fan posing as a--what would the singular of Crimson Tide be--algum? Elephant? Piece of TP with detergent sprinkled on it?

I hope to hell you're an imposter; I almost went to Alabama. Come on now; show your true colors--that's just wrong, doin 'Bama like that!

Alright, I'm kidding about the imposter bit--but perhaps a change of handle might be in order; that's just embarrasing.

    SHA (#66):

""you have once again RAN"? Wrong tense and YOU are a good writer?"

Well, congratulations on joining the Grammar Police...

Apparently, the idea behind that sentence is correct though since none of have witnessed you actually discussing the topic at hand in a reasonable manner in your last few posts on this thread...

    BTW-the tense is correct...

    It present perfect...

"I didn't see anything in post #53 about elephants on the sideline. Perhaps you need to get back on track. You think?"

Perhaps because it was a response to your previous three posts at 50, 51 & 52 none of which mentioned anything about Bama much less an elephant anywhere but lamely attempted to ...

"Funny how you trash me for doing the same damn thing that you do."

    The funny thing is...

I haven't "trashed" you at any point...

    Yet...

"I would say go post on a Florida thread but no one cares enough about Florida to even start one."

Apparently K-Hue cared enough to post the Tebow for Heisman? thread just last week...

    "Long live Suburban The Gator."

    Huh?

Tampagator you have got to be the dumbest sh#t walking the planet. I didn't say anything about Crimson Tide being based on a movie from the 90's. I said that the first thing that comes to mind for me is Crimson Tide the movie. Not only are you a dumb f**k, you don't even read well.

Florida fans want to start an argument about every damn subject! Apparently you're miserable because you're an also ran in the SEC this year.

    # 65 it's not uncommon for a school to name some of it's rivals in a fight song.

    UCLA
And if we chance to see
    A man from USC
    Every Bruin starts to roar.

    Texas
    Texas Fight! Texas Fight!
    And it's goodbye to A & M.

    Texas A & M
    Good-bye to Texas University
So long to the Orange and the White

    California
And when he hears the tread
    Of lowly Stanford red

    Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech is out for a victory
We'll drop our battle axe on Georgia's head, CHOP!

    Kansas
Talk about the Sooners, the Cowboys and the Buffs,
Talk about the Tiger and his tail,
Talk about the Wildcat, and those Cornhuskin' boys,
But I'm the bird to make 'em weep and wail.

Sweet Home: I don't know where you got the Georgia Tech one, but those lyrics are not a part of "Ramblin Wreck".

And Texas A+M ought to just rename theirs, "Texas Sucks".

#77 Yes and they also sing" The eyes of Texas are upon you that is the song they sing so well- Go To Hell We are the fightin---Aggies bla bla
They also have saw the horns off of varsity in their lyrics, its beyond obsession with A&M.
BTW Live Elephants-boost spirit right ?
They already have plenty of spirit, looks like they will get some protest from the vegtable eating, no leather wearing, going to force our unfounded beliefs upon you, PETA people.
I would hate to have to care for and feed an animal of that size.A horse will generally consume three times the amout of hay required for a single cow. How much does one pacaderm eat?
Do they have minutures? little elephants ?
I know about minuture horses and cattle

    Georgia Tech
    "White & Gold"

    (Played after a touchdown)

So then it's up with the White and Gold
Down with the Red and the Black
Georgia Tech is out for a victory
We'll drop our battle axe on Georgia's head, CHOP!
When we meet her our team will surely beat her
Down on the old farm there'll be no sound
Till our bow wows rip through the air
When the battle is over Georgia's team will be found
With the Yellow Jackets swarming around.

Bevo Boy the SGA was never considering an elephant on the sidelines. It was to be on the Quad, NOT inside the stadium. This was just blown way up into something big. Bama haters just saw an opportunity to make fun of us again. Jealousy runs rampant on this forum.

Thanks, SHA, I wasn't sure why they'd keep an elephant on the sidelines. It seems like more fans get upset rather get them more involved because it would obstruct their view.
