Saban wins argument with himself
The highest paid head coach in college football may have lost to the lowest paid coch in college foobtall on the field, but Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban can hold his head high knowing that he won an argument with himself on Saturday.
Saban, who had suspended star WR DJ Hall for a violation of team rules, over-rode his own suspension during the Louisiana-Monroe loss - inserting the suspended Hall into the game.
Ian Rapport of the Birmingham News asked Saban about why he played Hall despite the suspension.
I asked Saban post-game if receiver DJ Hall was suspended for 30 minutes from the beginning. As in, was it a game suspension that turned into a half suspension?"It was what it was," he said.
So, I asked, a half suspension?
"What it was," Saban said.
Wow. Just... wow.

I'd be pissed if FSU lost to LA Monroe before our big game. You lose that one, and you look pretty much as bad as they do.
Oh Nicky boy; you and the Dolphins would both be so much better off right now, had you stayed.

The talk out of Tuscaloosa is that DJ and John Parker got into a shouting match during a practice last week and that DJ was given a short suspension.
Anyone have any thoughts as to why DJ was standing on the sidelines in full uniform if he was suspended for the entire game? It seems to me that if he were suspended for the whole game he wouldn't have dressed out. And yeah, it was senior day. But, even with it being senior day, if he was suspended he could just go out there in street clothes and get his accolades before the game then leave the field.
Just my thoughts.

I think yall are making a bigger deal out of this than it really is. IF SHA is correct in his post #10, then it was probably over some stupid shit anyway, Saban is the one who suspended him, and he is the one who put him back in. Cowbell/#13:
Allow me to spell it out for you: the guy was suspended for the Game.
Alabama not being able to handle the mighty indians of ULA-Monroe, prompted Saban to compromise his "principles"--and let the guy play...
...and they still lost.
The big deal?
A. Saban's principles=oxymoron (that alone is worth a hell of a laugh);
B. Alabama lost to ULA-Monroe;
C. They blew the closest thing they ahd to an excuse by letting him play;
D. They still lost.
OH the humiliation...

I hope Alabama comes to Auburn Saturday with their tail still tucked between their legs. What those not associated with the teams don't realize is that there is a good history of the team with the sub-par season playing the game of their lives in the Iron Bowl.
Not that Auburn's season has been anything other than mediocre, but Alabama has lost their last three games and their season has lost the luster they thought they had obtained earlier in the year.
If there's one thing that could make all the pain go away for Alabama, it would be a victory over Auburn.
Let's see if we can't make the pain persist for a little longer.

Probably the safest bet to place, is that Ohio State has the best shot to play in the NC game, because they can't lose anymore! Ican see Missouri beating Kansas and Oklahoma beating Missouri (again) and even West Virginia losing to Syracuse and LSU losing to Arkansas or Tennessee or Georgia and the only one loss team left being Ohio State. I agree with you Kevin. If it was a game suspension then he shouldn't have been put in. Not like they were trying to win with him though. John Parker only threw to him 3 times for 32 yards.
If it was as the radio here is reporting a shouting match between quarterback and receiver I don't think that it should have been a suspension anyway.

Hey, we Bama fans can take it and I agree it is right out of a "Born Loser" cartoon. The highest paid college football coach in the country loses to Mississippi State (that's bad) and then comes home and loses to some non-directional La. school in the Sunbelt conference or whatever and puts a guy into the game that is suppose to be suspended? Very bad.
Good luck this weekend War Eagle. One day we are going to have one of these Auburn vs. Alabama games that actually means something to more than SEC fans.

T-Mac I've been saying all season that Arkansas has a chance to upset LSU. Their games are often close. The last two years LSU has won by 5 and 2 points. If McFadden gets in that secondary he can cause nightmares. Cover him and Jones picks up the slack.
I think it will be an interesting game. With Nutt leaving, the team might want to win one for the coach.

On the DJ Hall incident:
I have heard numerous reports of players "getting into it" with John Parker Wilson. From everyone ive talked to that knows him, (be it students or players) the guy is a complete douchebag. Rolondo McClain (MLB) body slammed JP in the locker room before the ULM game after JP asked him to turn his music off and focus on the game, McClain refused, and then JPW asked him if "he wanted to go."
Considering this, the "fight" that DJ Hall got into with JP was probably started by john parker, but im guessing that DJ Hall over-reacted. But hell id be pissed too if i had to rely on JPW for my receiving stats. If DJ had a decent QB throwing to him, hed be in the heisman race.
There must be some kinda story with our backups because it seems that nobody on the team likes JP as a person/leader. Not to mention the fact that JP is possibly the worst QB in the SEC. He has the best WR corps in the country. Most QBs would KILL to have people like DJ Hall and Keith Brown to throw the ball to.

Prehaps the pressure is just getting to Saban a little.
Im pretty sure that he must have felt sure his team could afford to not have there best player for this game.
Then he must have panicked a bit and thought i better get DJ in there and try and win this one.If i were back home i could get the full scoop as i know DJs high school coach very well and they talk quite often.
However i would have to disagree with the coach if he let a suspended player play.Any time your the highest paid coach or player for that matter you will be open to all kinds of critiques.
If in two years he can turn this team around all will be forgotten but if not it could get ugly.

I was told that the suspension info came from the University of Alabama. All that I can find are a couple of newspaper articles, one from Huntsville and the other from Birmingham.
John Parker holds most of the school quarterbacking records at Alabama, not something that you accomplish if you're the worst quarterback in the SEC.

This was the Tuscaloosa News take on DJ.
TUSCALOOSA | Senior wide receiver DJ Hall, the University of Alabama’s all-time receiving leader, was suspended for the first half of Saturday’s game for violation of team rules, but did play in the second half.
“It’s one of those things that a violation of team rules and policies, I’m not going to say what it is that warranted, at least, what was given,” coach Nick Saban said. “That’s all I’m going to say about that, but guys making choices and decisions that don’t put them into position to help the team is not something that lends itself to being responsible, relative to what we do in representing our team, our teammates and this institution.”

Final comments before Auburn. I'm damn glad we've got Saban coaching our team because the past two weeks show that there are some underlying problems in Tuscaloosa that go beyond X's and O's. The great coaches always say its "Players not plays that win games." Well the same can be said for losing. There seems to be a negativity about these guys that really shows up when things begin to go the wrong way. Is that a lack of leadership from the upperclassmen? Regarding all the off the field problems I'd say that has to have something to do with it. Is it because most of these seniors have just experienced so many ups and downs, coaching changes, etc. that maybe they just expect the worst? Whatever the root cause, it is going to take a man with considerable coaching experience to turn this thing around and Mike Shula was not that guy. Saban will get this thing sorted out, but there are problems that he inherited that go deep in the grain and it is going to take a few recruiting classes to change attitudes about pride and respect for your teammates and playing for someone other than yourself. That's what champions do, they pick up that heavy burden and keep carrying it all the way to the finish line whether winning or losing. They don't just drop it and give up. The team that was playing in Tuscaloosa Saturday may have been beaten before they ever took the field. Like I said earlier this week, they will not be getting any sympathy over on The Plains Saturday so they better buckle up or it will get ugly.

Big Tide:
Some outside observations from a Trojan fan (completely impartial). I also bet football games using my own system that incorporates all the BCS computer polls and ratings (Sagarin, Colley, Billingsley, Anderson/Hester, etc.).
First off, at 6-5 and facing the real possibility of being 6-6 and not even being invited to a Bowl (although I think they will), the Tide will probably have no better record than last year. Also, Alabama's rating was dropping down to last years levels (prior to the ULM loss), which indicates that they are not even as good as they were last year. Unless Bama beats Auburn they will finish with a lesser rating than they had last year.
What does it mean? It means that Saban is not the greatest on field coach or strategest. He could not turn it all around in one year with his wonderful coaching abilities. What Saban does well is to recruit. And, he did bring Alabama a wonderful crop of recruits this year. Problem is: freshman don't win games. Therefore, the fact is: Alabama will be about 2-3 more years away from contending for the SEC title. Any expectations otherwise are not well founded.
I look for Auburn to be about a seven point favorite and probably cover the points this year. Although, there is nothing preventing the Tide from winning this game. Nick Saban is not gonna make much difference out there on Saturday - players win the games (unless your Kansas where Mangino wins the games). Those are my worthless two cents.Tommie Trojan

Post 10, No big deal huh. So what do you tell all the other player at Bama?? That it depends on how good you are, in determining how long the suspension is. What about other player who sat out their entire suspenion. But it's ok, because when ULM get you on the ropes, you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess. He can't even be honest with himself.
