Saban cites 9-11, channels Animal House
How does the nation's highest paid coach motivate his players for this weekend's Iron Bowl following a devastating loss to Louisiana-Monroe?
He invokes 9-11 terrorist attacks and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
"Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event," Saban said during the opening remarks of his weekly news conference. "It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, or whatever, and that was a catastrophic event."
I don't think anyone will debate that Slick Nick is dipping the bottom of the barrel on this poor metaphor. I mean... seriously, the highest paid coach in America channelling Bluto from Animal House?!?

I dont think Saban completely understands what will be taken place this saturday on the plains.
I realize he coached at LSU and he is a fine coach.
However if you have never been to this game and actually played in it or coached in it no way you can get what it means. Maybe if he were from Alabama but other wise he just has to go through one.
Throw out the records, Alabama players get it, most of them are native to Alabama and they will be ready but the old coach dosent have to pump them up for this one.
Trust me Auburn will be ready too. After such a terrible start to the season it didnt take long to hinge all your hopes on this one game. Like a healing salve this one will do wonders for the victor.
Ill be there should be a great, game strap on your seat belts fellas its going to get crazy.1st_and_NOLE

If Nick Saban wants to compare WW2 or 9-11 to football...
Maybe that babbling idiot should grab a rifle, travel half way around the world, and stand a post in a hostile country and experience a bullet or two zip past his head...
Then he can get back to us with his comparison of football to life and death situations.
Seriously Saban, you're an idiot and you'd be best served to STFU.

Yep, Saban has really missed it on this one. No matter what has ever happened at Pearl Harbor, The Twin Towers, Normandie, Hiroshima or Auchswitz - no human emotion can quite describe the feelings of pain and suffering that Alabama natives must go through after suffering a loss to their hated rivals. Unlike other communities that have been completely sacked by their enemies - Alabama folk have got to wait one whole year before they can enact their revenge. The frustration in that must be unsufferable! I can relate, most definately, because I have to wait even two more weeks before we get to kill UCLA!

Seriously, I hope Saban only has to step foot in Louisiana once, every other year. Even though I'm grateful that he helped LSU to a MNC in '03, I'm ashamed that he was part of the program.
I'm beginning to wonder if his doctors keep changing his meds or something, the guy is like tri-polar or something. I almost want to feel sorry for him, but I don't.

You guys are unbelievable. All it takes is for the word Saban to appear and no matter what, he will be damned.
IMO Saban was not drawing a parallel between the previously mentioned atrocities. He was using them metaphorically. Meaning, it took Pearl Harbor, 9/11, etc. etc. to wake up a sleeping giant from a long nap. However, when that giant awoke (USA) there was hell to pay (e.g. Japan, Germany, etc.)
That's just what I got from it. Of course, I am a Bama fan, so obviously I don't sit around looking for reasons to rip Saban a new one (like many posters on this site do).
If you feel the need to blast the guy for this, then by all means have it. I think the shots are unwarranted--but what do I know?
In the mean time, ROLL TIDE ROLL

LMAO! "When the going gets tough................................................the tough get going!"
Come on, 'Bama fans, it was funny. Lighten up a little. I don't think The Tide is going to be down for long. I'm betting that was the last game they lose for a long time.

OK. I just saw the news conference and the worst thing I saw was Saban's sweater. Somebody buy that guy some decent clothes!!!!
This is such a non-story. It reminds me of the old Bear Bryant story about his calling the Auburn athletic department at 6am to talk with one of the coaches. Some student assistant answered the phone and promptly told Bear that none of the coaches had gotten in yet. Bear says, "What's wrong with you people, don't you take football seriously?"
What's wrong with you people? We take football VERY serious at Bama. I am now officially a Saban guy. Hell yes it was as big as 9-11 or Pearl Harbor. University of Nobody Monroe comes to Tuscaloosa and wins - THAT'S A BIG DEAL. Give'em hell Nick. I'm calling the Athletic Department tomorrow morning to voice my support!!!! Roll Damn Tide!!!!

#7: Rammer, I'm afraid Saban sewed a target to his sweater the day he signed the contract to be the highest paid coach in NCAAFB. Quite frankly, a bit of egg must be on the faces of many Bama boosters now that the tide has lost to a team whose coach makes about one twentieth what Saban does.
But what do I know - I'm a Bama hater (according to SHA).
We've had this discussion come up on several discussion threads previously. When you take a head coaching position - especially in the SEC - you will be under a microscope, so pull up your titanium underoos and mind your P's and Q's.

Alright, enough with the serious smack talk, more quoting from the movie:
Guy with guitar: "I gave my love a cherry / That had no stone / I gave my love a chicken / That had no bones / I gave my love a story / That had no end / I gave my..."
Bluto: [grabs the guitar and smashes it against the wall] "Sorry."

1st and Nole, my therapist keeps telling me the same thing. I told him things started getting bad about the time Bama hired Dubose and then we got Flim Flammed by Coach Fran and some crazy guy from Memphis who didn't even have any connection to our University got us on probabation and then is murdered in his home and then we lost a coach to two strippers with a penchant for room service and during all that we had a coach doing on the job training.................................it's all just been more than I can handle.....................but I'm working on it. Baby steps. More medication. Baby steps.

Big Tide: Logan Young--no connection to the university? By that you mean that he never attended UAT, right? You weren't talking about the fact that two Alabama coaches approved him paying Albert Means' high school coach $150,000 for him to sign with Alabama? Nope, no connection there.
At this point, you throw Eric Ramsey at me, and I return fire with Gene Jelks. Touche?
