AP boots voter for thinking Sooners lost to Tech
Jim Kleinpeter of The Times-Picayune of New Orleans has been dumped from the AP College Football poll after he dropped Oklahoma from 15th to 24th on his poll ballot. Kleinpeter mistakenly believed that OU had lost this week's game to Texas Tech.
He said he was in the press box at the Alabama-LSU game "and I was asking about different teams, thinking about the poll the next day. I thought somebody told me that Oklahoma was losing to Texas Tech at some point. And I asked after the LSU game was over, 'Did Oklahoma win?' Somebody said Oklahoma lost," Kleinpeter said.
Despite Kleinpeter's vote, the Sooners moved up in the AP poll this week, from 17th to 16th.
"It was my fault," Kleinpeter said. "I probably had other avenues I could have gone to get the score, but I usually rely on the morning paper here in Baton Rouge. And for some reason, they didn't have the score. I looked all through it."It's as simple as that. It was a mistake."
ATTN Jim Kleinpeter: There is also this little thing called the Internet. Look into it.
AP sports editor Terry Taylor said: "We understand mistakes can happen, but we thought this one could have been prevented. The heart of the matter here is the credibility of the poll."
Kudos to the AP for taking steps to manage the ((ahem)) "credibility of the poll," however, I have my doubts that this is either the first time or the last time that an AP voter has guessed.

It's more likely that he's gonna $6,000,000 over the next five years. He doesn't seem to be too upset. He probably didn't care for the job anymore and was just lookin' for a way to get canned so that he could rake that huge "severence package" and head for "the Bahamas". He's probably got alot more on the ball than I do.

My anonymous sources have just reported this was a case of the super secret ND society; Axis Society Of Leprechauns(A.S.O.L.); retaliating for the Cheeseburger Incidents...
It had been thought that these A.S.O.L.'s were extinct but in light of the recent injustices suffered at the hands of the S.S.E.S.; the A.S.O.L.'s have returned...
A.S.O.L.'s were apparently placed in the press box with Jimbo to feed him the incorrect intel...
Another A.S.O.L. disconnected his internet connection, scrambled his TV and radio signals and had all traces of the game report removed from the local news rag...
No confirmation on whether any A.S.O.L. ate a cheesburger...

Clearly, I see a much bigger conspiracy involved here. Everybody has been wondering why USC has jumped all the way up to #3. Well, it's really simple, in light of this new development. The A.S.O.L.'s have infiltrated every voters network and somehow influenced them to vote USC higher in the rankings. This can only serve Notre Dame's best interest - as we all know that the Irish will kill the Trojan's in the Coliseum. When all the dust settles in two weeks, while USC is then ranked #2 and Notre Dame comes in and just demolished them, then Notre Dame stands the greatest argument for jumping four spots in the polls and into the National Championship game.
I'm really worried now! Can you get ahold of your sources at the S.S.E.S., and get them to step up their propeganda againt Notre Dame, so that either USC or Florida may still have a chance. Without their help - I'm afraid we're all doomed to watchin' Notre Dame get pounded by Ohio State again!Tommie T

Tommie, you must have gotten the +, - signs wrong, but good call on Ohio State winning by more than one score.
As for Tech, they sure had a good chance to win. They gave up a late first half TD that really changed momentum. Their field goal kicker Alex Trlica has to be one of the worst in D-1.

Define "games of any significance", please. I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but this clarification needs to happen in lots of circles. For instance, (yes, I'm a Wisconsin homer, but still) you don't include picking the Badgers game, but it is HIGHLY significant. They're somewhere in the #8 to 12 range in all the polls. A win and they close out the season 11-1. Depending on what happens with teams above us in the BCS, this game could have huge significance in the final BCS landscape.
So I guess the question is - games of significance to a given afternoon, or in the context of the season? Follow?

Is there a team who has had more bad luck than the Sooners this year? Look out for the Sooners to come in pissed next year and make a statement. Favorable schedule including Miami at home for good measure.
OU will be a top 5 team next year.

My term "games of significance refers to two teams, both rated in the Top 40, who are jockeying for better Bowl game appearances. That's all. I guess all games are significant. I just deem these as being the games that have a better shot at going either way. Obviously, when Florida plays Western Carolina - why should I bother picking a winner. How bout Arkansas vs Mississippi State? Should I waste my time? Anyway, that's all it means.

Yep, technically, you're right. The favored team would normally show a minus sign prior to the number that they would be favored by against the line. But, for practical purposes, the plus sign was used as an illustration as to how much better the favored team was deemed (for the layman only - like me). My numbers are based on averages only. I have Ohio State by 11 in the "average game played" and there has been eleven games played. That doesn't mean that Michigan's defense doesn't step up and make it much tougher. We'll see. Michigan has "underperformed" Ohio State by an average of around eight points every week.

I think the two teams that have had the worst luck so far are Ohio State and Michigan. One of those teams is gonna have to play USC this year. Remember what happened to Oklahoma when they came in with a 12-0 record? Wasn't it something like 55-19? Oh, and if you think you've gotten a broken heart this year, try going 12-0 next year and having the wheels come off your wagon against the Trojans again. It won't be good to be a Sooner next year. Your better off just finishing up 11-2 and be happy about that.

USC 27-Cal 24 - USC better watch the Special Teams defense against WR/KR DeSean Jackson (Long Beach Poly grad). Theyre best off kicking the ball out-of-bounds on every Kickoff. Limit the big plays (bend, dont break).

So Cal USMC:
First off, USC will not be punting. DeSean Jackson is not gonna do nothing in this game. Tedford will play right into Carroll's hands. This is how it will go down: The 1st task is to stop Lynch. He'll be spied by Lawrence Jackson on the strong side and Keith Rivers on the weak side. He won't be able to get outside because of the speed of Rivers and Maualuga. Cushing will provide the pass rush from WSDE and if Lynch doesn't get the ball - then Jackson turns and heads for Longshore also. Rivers stays with Lynch wherever he goes. I figure Moala lines up with Ellis at the DT's in this one to completely seal the middle down. If Cal gets too far behind, and has to throw, then Barrett will come in to chase Longshore some more. When Cal can't run and has to pass: Sartz will take the TE and Cary Harris is gonna end up taking Hawkins man on man. These two guys will go for the short stuff that USC will let them try. Kevin Ellison will lay the lumber to whichever one gets the ball. DeSean Jackson will be doubled all dayum day long by Terrell Thomas and Taylor Mays. He'll get hammered as soon as he catches anything - if he catches anything. Rey Maualuga will take care of anything in the middle or sideline to sideline. If Forsett comes in for screen plays - then Rivers will step up to take him out. He'll spy this guy also. Ted ford would do best to just forget about Jackson and try and get the ball to Hawkins and the TE or maybe some guys out of the backfield. Maybe he ought to go to multiple receiver sets and stay away from Jackson. But, I'll think he'll try and force it and get burned. The dink and dunk stuff that the Washington's were doing was working somewhat. But, I believe, that Cal will not be able to rely on their other people to get it done. They'll continually force it to Lynch and Jackson with very undesirable results.
On offense: USC will just pound them. Steve Smith is the guy to watch in this one. Fred Davis should go big also. Jarrett is gonna be doubled and these two guys will kill Cal throught the air. And, of cource, Chauncey is just gonna keep pounded the rock on them. No chance for Cal.Tommie T

Tommy T,
Not a bad breakdown. Lynch will get stuffed. Jackson can do damage if they can get the ball to him, I do not see that happening consitently. On offense, USC will exploit Cals weak secondary, a lot of yards after contact against those guys. I could see Booty having some big numbers. I would like Cal to knock USC off but I do not think it will happen. I predict:
USC 35
Cal 17So Cal USMC said:

Tommy T,
Lets hope there's not much Punting (I think Cal is Ranked 2nd in PR Yardage!, USC is ranked 70-something in PR-Yds Defense).
To simplify things, USC will have to "stop" the Run (the way Tennessee and Arizona did) to win the game... and they're pretty good at that. Thats the gameplan from USC's perspective... But thats why I stress the SPECIAL TEAMS! Dont let Cal exploit that advantage (UCLA 2006 was great at Special Teams, USC consistantly kicked the ball away from the Returners). Looking at the past couple of weeks aroung the country, quite a few games came down to Special teams - lets not overlook Sp Tms!

Quit whinning, you got jobbed but you still lost. Even with the bad calls you still had a good chance to win the game, the Sooners just didn't perform in the final minute.
The Sooners have had a great season considering what they have been through (Peterson out / Bomar controversy).

Mayor:
Thanx for pickin' the Bears. We needed that boost and your Karma's gonna come in handy. As for these whinin' Okie's - man they gotta get over it. There's bad calls in every single game. Trojans got jerked for a couple against Texas last year. I never heard even one fan say a word. We've gotten our breaks too. I think that the philosophy ought to be, "if you don't want the outcome to rest in the officials hands", then win by at least thirty points. If it's that close that a bad call can determine the outcome - you didn't play very good anyway and probably deserved to lose. How bout all those "holdings" that your team got away with anyway. How many "clips" do you see that go uncalled. I see all kinds of stuff. There lucky I'm not an official. I'd throw a flag on every single play. I'm sure I can find something. It's a joke to beat that dead horse.

Diggs, good game. I thought for a while Pitt was doing a good job by keeping up with WVU. They won by 18, not 21, but damn close.
The Mayor: I'm not whining. And thanks for your recognition for the adversity we have faced. But we should be 9-1, and if it happened to your team you would understand. But now, we are just hoping that Texas loses to a&m (unlikely) and that we win out (likely). Then we get BCS, and more needed recognition and publicity.
