Reports: Morriss won't be back at Baylor for 2008

Both the Houston Chronicle and The Dallas Morning News are reporting that Baylor head coach Guy Morriss will not be back with the Bears football team following this season, citing unnamed sources within the Baylor program.

Morriss is 18-38 in five seasons at Baylor, having lost 10 straight Big XII games dating to last season. The Bears are 7-32 under Morriss in Big XII conference play and will be heavy underdogs in their two remaining games against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. Baylor has never beaten Oklahoma, dating back to 1901.

The most recent loss to Texas Tech at home guaranteed that Baylor will have their twelth-straight losing season. The Bears have had a losing season every year since the inception of the Big XII conference.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Baylor - the only private school in the Big XII - will pay less than $1 million to part ways with Morriss.

The most likely replacement candidate is Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker and Baylor alum Mike Singletary.

Singletary was originally interviewed in 2002 before the job was awarded to Morriss, with Singletary's lack of coaching experience cited as a key decision factor. Since that interview, Singletary has spend five years as an NFL assistant coach for the San Franscisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens.

Other names that may be considered are Houston coach Art Briles and Boise State's Chris Petersen.

I hope Baylor will set the standard for Texas Division 1-A programs by hiring the first Africian American Head Coach. Mike Singletary's name alone will bring fans to the football stadium! But really bloggers, I hope they hire someone to make Baylor competative so the Big 12 can be talked about! Iowa State and Baylor are the weakest link in the Big 12!

I think the bigger, more precedent setting day will be one that goes by when a guy like Singletary is hired, and no one has to hope or celebrate his skin color...

We're not there, but it's on the way...

I would like to point out that niether of the two articles sited above made any reference to race of any sort.

They did make references to Mike Singletary's interviews for the NFL head coaching jobs at Atlanta and Dallas in recent years.

The idea that Mike Singletary is not the best man to make Baylor competitive in the Big 12 is preposterous. Mike Singltary's name alone will bring the fans in, not his skin color. Wins alone will measure his success.

#4 Singletary's name will bring back the fans and may also help with recruiting top atheletes as well.Alot of great players from central Texas go to OU, OK St, UT, TTech, A&M ,TCU etc etc
Alot of top players will go out of state to a winning program before they will commit to a {bunch of losers}at least thats the perception.
Coach Morris is a good coach and he had sucess at Kentucky, too bad his time at Baylor was not as successful.
Bring back a famous Alum should help a program that has been down for a long time.
Art Briles is a great coach, however the rumor is that hes going to Auburn to replace Tubberville.
    Sicem-Bears beat OU

    T-Cat (#6):

While I agree Mike's name would probably bring in the fans...

I don't think it will hold as much weight with incoming recruits...

These kids weren't even born yet when Singeltary was crackin heads in the NFL...

I'm willing to bet most 15-18 year old high school kids would not even have an idea of who he is...

#7 gatorhippy Ya I'm afraid your probably right as far as the kids of today are concerned.
Coach Morris had some success while at BU and there were some bright moments. In 2005 they went 5-6 and beat SMU the team that ruined TCU's perfect season. In 2004 they beat Texas A&M and the fans tore down the goalpost.Unlike other programs that have goals of a national title or a conference title BU's goal was to have a winning season and make it to a bowl.Last year they had alot of trouble early with their OCC games a real tough close loss to TCU then Wash St and then a real heartbreaker to Army. They actually did better during conference play and beat CU in OT in Boulder, they also beat KSU something that UT couldnt do.They also defeated KU a top ranked team this year. They lost their star Quarterback Shawn Bell to injury and lost several games towards the end.As a result they ened up 4-8 and coach had to let go of his coaching staff.
He lost the guys{ coaches} that had been with for several years and lost several key players to graduation.Playing in the XII south is a very difficult task for any coach period, because there is no weakness. Look at who Baylor has to face every year OU, UT, Ok st, TTech and T A&M.
That is the toughest division in CFB in my opinion, yes guys including the SEC.There are absolutley no easy wins and whoever takes over for the Bears has got his work cutt out for him.
There are alot of great coaches out there and I wish them alot of luck, because they are gonna need it.
    Todd Grahm
    Art Briles
    Gary Patterson
    Mike Singletary
