Who should be #2?

With Southern Cal losing to UCLA, the question for college football is: Who's #2? Which team deserves the shot to beat Ohio State for the National Championship? Michigan? Florida?

Let the debate begin!

Man, if only exams at a University had questions this easy......UM, of course. What crap, SEC Championship game my a*&&%$.

Both teams in SEC Chump game tried giving it away, and Arkansas succeeded. UF's tough struggle against a 2 loss team today, and their defeat by a 2 loss team in the season seals their fate. Can you say Suger Bowl?

Everyone knows that UM whipped ND in South Bend, and lost by 3 in Columbus. Now they'll get it done in Glendale, a less friendly confine for OSU, and with a surface worthy of playing on.

How can a team play 13 games and say that that they should play in the BCS championship. If this is the case should the other teams in the other conferences that don't play 13 games play against a cup cake team like central florida just to bloster there record have a ligitimate chance at the BCS.

    Ok,

I'll be the first to petition for FLorida to play Ohio State. Bulletized format to follow:

    - Michigan is the (next) best team in the land. Period... They are the true #2 team.

    - Michigan lost "the game". If ohio State would have lost the game, I would have to take it on the chin. It's tradition and that's the way it is. Tradition guys... we can't break it.

    - Another team has to have thier shot. Otherwise we as BIG 10 Fans will never hear the end of the BCS BS. For example; if Michigan beats Ohio State the argument will always be there... think about it (One and One this year vs. the rival).

    - I propose that the SEC champs play Ohio State, and USC gets a bid to the rose bowl to get worked by Michigan.

We cannot play again... Bo and Woody I believe would see it that way too.

Oh boy let the MEANINGLESS stats begin. Florida Fan Quote: "Our SOS is blah, blah, blah," vs. Michigan fan quote:" We beat the team, that beat the team, that Vanderbilt played, that loss to the team, that beat the team, who lost to the team, that beat the team..."

HERE IS THE TRUTH FROM A FAN THAT IS NEITHER A GATOR OR MICHIGAN FAN.

On a neutral field, Michigan would beat Florida. Now let's see if the polls prove that tomorrow.

    FLORIDA.

    (Sorry, fellow 'Canes...)

Compare schedules. For every close Florida game, they still didn't come close to losing to BALL STATE on their home field.

Florida had to go through a great Arkansas team to win the SEC Championship.

Enough of the Midwest Overhype. (You can download Michigan - Ohio State classics on iTunes, for cryin' out loud...)

Give someone else a shot at Ohio State. Michigan blew theirs...

    Michigan, hands down.

Why? Because they were #2 coming in, and Florida certainly does not deserve to jump them based on their win over a team who basically has no quarterback, and whose star running back was at 70% because of an injury (and they still had a tough time).

Put it this way - home field is commonly known to be worth 3 points. Michigan lost by 3 at Ohio State, meaning a tie, or even match on a neutral field. Now, if Ohio State is #1, how could Michigan not be #2? They can't.

Answer this, who has michigan played except for Ohio State (loss) and Notre dame?? Michigan LOST to the number 1 team, Florida has not played the number 1 team. Give florida a shot. Florida's total offense is ranked higher than michigan and florida's points allowed per game is ranked higher than michigan

UF has looked bad a lot this season, but they always (but once) win. Michigan had their chance to win. It was "win and your in" and they lost...I know they lost to OSU, a good team, but we really dont know how good OSU/Mich are since they havent played a tough schedule. Look at ND and Texas... Very disappointing years. Michigan doesnt have the winning attitude/spirt UF has. If you dont wanna look at it, just look at record and SOS. UF 12-1 Mich 11-1 and we all know UF had a harder schedule

    sheccs (#13):

    I CALL BIAS.

Everyone outside of Ann Arbor knows that Michigan was 10 points behind Ohio State for most of the game and got lucky turnovers that made the score closer.

FLORIDA played a much tougher schedule. Period-Dot:

    Michigan Games vs. +.500 teams:
    #1 Ohio State (12-0) (L)
    #7 Wisconsin (11-1) (W)
    #12 Notre Dame (10-2) (W)
    Penn State (8-4) (W)
    Central Michigan (9-4) (W)

    FIVE.

    Florida Games vs. +.500 teams:
    #11 Auburn (10-2) (L)
    #5 Louisiana State (10-2) (W)
    #8 Arkansas (10-3) (W)
    #17 Tennessee (9-3) (W)
    Georgia (8-4) (W)
    South Carolina (7-5) (W)
    Kentucky (7-5) (W)
    Southern Miss (8-5) (W)

    EIGHT.

    5

FLORIDA was one of the best two teams in their conference; they played the other in the final game of their regular season and WON.

MICHIGAN was one of the best two teams in their conference; they played the other in the final game of their regular season and LOST.

And lastly, as far as the 'home field = 3 points logic and Michigan lost by 3', I will respond by this:

LOSERS KEEP TRACK OF HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE.
WINNERS KEEP TRACK OF WINS AND LOSSES.

THIS IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL. WIN OR GO HOME.

Michigan played Ohio State. They LOST. It's someone else's turn...

    Florida vs. Mighigan

Well, Michigan only lost 1 game to Ohio State the # 1 team... but Florida has one loss against the toughest schedule. So if a team plays a bunch of not so good teams and one really good team does that make them good because they lost to that good team? But you could say Florida almost lost to South Colina. They needed a high jumping defensive end to block a kick to win. So saying Michigan needed a safety to break up a pass so they wouldn't lose to Ball State is the same. We could go back and forth all day.

Take the blinders off... What's the best part about Bowl Games? You get to see teams from opposing conferences play, teams that would normally not play each other during the regular season. Not teams that played their last game against each other. Michigan had their chance they lost, they didn't win the Big Ten, so they shouldn't play in the Championship game.
Plus did you see how exciting the Florida Game was I'd like to see them against Ohio State. I think they can beat them, but we know Michigan did not.

Throw the stats out the window, both Michigan and Florida fans can make a case. At the end of the day ask yourself if Michigan and Florida played who do you think would win? As a close college football observer I say Michigan hands down. If Flordia leap frogs Michigan with a not so impressive win today it proves just how useless the current system is. MI vs. OSU is a toss-up. OSU vs FL will be a lousy championship game. OSU wins in a route.

Florida and it is a no brainer. They both have a loss and Florida has played a far superior schedule. Michigan had their chance, OSU did not play very well and still hung 42 on them. Florida will play in the NC game and beat OSU. It will be an ugly game but I call Florida by 3. Florida has the best defense in the nation. Also, I would love to see LSU - Notre Dame in the Sugar, that would shut IrishJT up for a season or two.

I don't want to hear another word about USC, they are a good young team but 2 losses to unranked teams is unacceptable for an elite program.

Let me be the first to throw this out there..... (At least I think I'm the first)how about a SPLIT NATIONAL TITLE. Are we seeing this scenerio being set up in the BCS era again? (I believe USC & LSU did split before). Here we go...Michigan beats OSU (score obviously doesn't matter) and Florida wins their bowl game by at least 14 points. I would support a split. Anyone other than Florida or Michigan fans got some feedback on this??

Why would a win against a team with no quarterback and an injured player that engines the whole entire offense be convincing enough to pass Michigan. Florida has barely won every game all year. Anybody who has watched Michigan play this year knows that Michigan had every game it played besides OSU under control. Please don't bring up Boise St. Mike Hart played one series the whole second half and they scored a touchdown. Carr rested the defense too early. The last two touchdowns were scored against the second team except for a 3 yard touchdown run. Michigan would kill Florida on a neutral field. I think they would handel them in the swamp also.

I just crunched the numbers and here is the best mathematical argument for what I believe is going to happen.

I predict the computers rankings to be irrelevant. Even if ALL swing toward Florida, the Harris and USA today poll will be the final deciding factor. If Florida and Michigan gained an EQUAL amount of votes in these two polls (Harris and USA), and Florida won ALL of the computer rankings, Florida still loses.

    Best Case Scenario (Florida)
    Mich 23 23 23 23 = 92/100 = .920
    Flor 24 24 24 24 = 96/100 = .960

    Mich (Harris): .9172
    Flor (Harris): .8870

    Mich (USA): .9175
    Flor (USA): .8921

    Mich BCS standings .918
    Flor BCS standings .913

And even that kind of luck is unlikely for Florida. After crunching the numbers, and going back and looking at the history of those two polls ....I'd say I'm 99.9% certain Michigan is going.

    /Fight for a playoff.

For all intents and purposes, I truly hope that MI gets into the NC for two key reasons:

    1) Outside of two states, hardly anyone will pay any attention to the game. Outside of these two states, no one wants to see this match up. MI had their chance and the first game really wasnt as close as the final score indicates.
    2) The non-response to the NC by the general public fuels the flames for a playoff system.

The current BCS system sucks almost as bad as the Heisman voting.

Ohio state no doubt has the best offense in the country. Florida however is the best defense that ohio state will play. I think florida has a very good chance to shock ohio state with some real defense. Everyone called on arkansas to run over Florida, but we stopped them dead in their tracks. I think Florida has the potential to upset Ohio State more than people give them credit for.

Dear Lord! Dear Lord! Dear Lord!

NOBODY knows who the best two teams in the country are. Period. You can make an argument about Michigan...but they already lost to Ohio State. You can make an argument about Florida...but they lost to Auburn. You can make an argument about USC but they lost to UCLA.

Here is my Biased take on the whole thing. NOBODY besides Michigan Fans think Michigan deserves another shot. It's a GREAT "selling game"...the second best rivalry in the college football for all the marbles?! Beautiful.

    But

Michigan lost their shot. Had they beaten Ohio State it would be different. They didn't.

USC lost the rivalry game to UCLA. That chucks them to a two loss team and BYE BYE!

Florida came through the toughest conference with only one loss and won the SEC. I say again THE SEC!

I'm sorry guys, but getting a winning record in the SEC is hard. Play Auburn, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas and LSU all within a 1 and a half month period and your team will wear down.

In a two month run Florida faced Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Vandy and South Carolina. NOW here is where you make upset comments. Who's Kentucky? (That's the team that beat Georgia and came close to Tennessee) Alabama? Didn't they go 6-6 and fire the coach? (Yes, but they lost to Arkansas in 2 overtimes by one and held close to Florida, Tennesse and Auburn) Vandy? Yes Vandy! No longer the stepping child of the SEC.

Why doesn't the Big Ten ever go into a good conference to get some out of conference competition? Alabama took on Oklahoma. Auburn got Pete's USC boys. Look at out the schedule between Florida and Michigan on a week to week basis and I give Michigan 4 weeks with a harder opponet. ONLY 4!

WANT TO KNOW THE BEST PART? No way Ohio State would still be undefeated if they had to come throught the SEC conference. They are a great team, but week in and week out against the SEC boys?

    NO WAY.

    Some replies:
PopsMich - Read the above 50 times

The decision will be made based on the largest audience draw. You need 2 teams from different areas to attract attention nationally. Economics is the key not the 2nd best team, which by the way is Michigan. I love the Big 10!!

    Florida not Michicken

If you’re not the Conference Champ you shouldn’t be the national champ.

Go back to 2003. Oklahoma earns a spot in the Sugar Bowl by finishing first in the final BCS Standings. Oklahoma then loses to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game. LSU, the SEC champion, edged USC for second place in the final BCS Standings to advance to the Sugar Bowl. # 2 LSU beat # 1 Oklahoma 21-14. LSU declared the national championship.

Here’s another interesting BCS flaw, IMHO. Keep in mind the score does not matter in six of the eight computers.

Michicken lost .0472 BCS points with loss to OSU. Then looses .0047 the following week when they were idle. USC jumps them by beating # 5 ND. ND looses .1936, USC gains .0272 and leads Michicken by .0075. Then # 10 LSU beats # 6 Rkansass. LSU gains .1675 and Rkansass looses .1449.

    Hmmmmmm

Some where along the line, u gotta give credit where credit is due! UM does have the "better" loss but both UM and tOSU are really unproven w/the "weaker" sched.! Post #23 took the words outta my mouth, If u cant win your conf. how do u get into the NC game? UF has been playn "crappy" all year but they are still standing here at the end! GO GATORS!!!!!!

Hey Chris (which by the way is my first name),
    Re: post#51,

I'll never forget that 34-13 beatdown that Alabama put on my canes in 1992 (at least I think that was the score). Derrick Lassic ran all over us and George Teague stripped Lamar "don't bring that to the OB!" Thomas of the ball, while in stride, just like Maurice Clarett did in the 02' National title game. Yes I have a good memory and yes it took a few years to get over that one. ;o). Best wishes to Alabama with the coaching situation. But that sugarbowl was a masterful defensive gameplan by Bama.

I say Ohio State gets the National Championship by default for being the only team capable of going undefeated. Let the people crying about why they deserve a shot play each other in the game to see who is the second best and give Ohio State the crystal ball they have already earned. If Michigan feels they should be in the Championship then Ohio State should already be Champs because we already won head to head.

Also, for everyone crying about the field conditions at the Shoe, find another excuse. Both teams played for the first time on the same field. Michigan lost to Ohio State, they don't deserve to be in the Championship even if they are the second best team. There time came and went. There should not be a second chance.

Most Michigan fans will think I say this because OSU fans are scared to face them again. No, I just don't see how you can make a team have to beat the same team twice in order to crown an appropriate champ. What if Michigan did win? Is it now co-champs. They don't deserve it outright if they did win. Yes, the BCS is BS, but it is what college football has decided and Michigan doesn't deserve another shot at Ohio State.

    MICHIGAN!

U of M only played 12 games to FA's 13! That's MORE games played for FA on TV & TODAY on TV, too! Why should FA get to play yet ANOTHER championship game & '14' games when U of M hasn't played any championship game yet, although there will be NO better game in '06 than U of M -vs- OSU, and U of M should've won had the REF NOT BLOWN the INCIDENTAL helmet:helmet contact (Crable:Smith).

Today's USC LB (Maleu, SP?) HELMET:HELMET sideline hit (hmm? This looks familiar!) on UCLA QB (Cowan) was much more vicious, just like the T. A & M game a week ago when Colt McCoy got steamrolled by a T. A & M lineman on a vicious HELMET:HELMET hit, but NEITHER player/team was penalized like MICHIGAN!

Why NOT? Where's the YELLOW FLAG or PENALTY???

Perhaps Heisman Hopeful QB's receive preferential treatment. The 3 HELMET:HELMET rules in the NCAA were revised in 2005 & ALL 3 insist contact must be INTENTIONAL, NOT incidental to be a penalty! The REF. in the U of M-vs-OSU game misapplied the NFL rule in an NCAA game!

Thus, the NCAA OWES U of M BIG TIME!

The REF's in last week's Texas-vs-T. A & M game & today's USC-vs-UCLA games got both calls RIGHT! There was NO penalty on either of those plays either even though the HELMET:HELMET contact on the 2 QB's (McCoy & Cowan) was even more severe than what Troy Smith suffered on the Crable hit.

    Home Field advantage 4 sure!

    Heisman hopeful favoritism 4 sure!

Anyway, why bring this up now?

Michigan should be #1 (12-0) had the REF. got it RIGHT like the REF's in the Texas-Texas A&M and UCLA-USC games did!

That's the biggest reason U of M should get a RE-MATCH with OSU. U of M was RIPPED off by a bad REF. call on a very pivotal play (3rd & 15)!

    Michigan would've probably WON 39-35 or 39-38!

Also, U of M still lost by ONLY "3" pts. to the #1 team on the ROAD, too!

Florida lost to Auburn by more who lost more games!
Also since there is NO PLAYOFF (even the California H.S. Football teams get a STATE PLAYOFF this year), teams should be limited to the SAME # of games PRIOR to BCS rankings or all Conference winners should play another Conference winner (i.e. BIG 10 winner -vs- BIG 12 winner) to ultimately decide the BCS Championship or have a playoff like the NCAA Basketball March Madness to decide who's #1!

    Finally, do the Math!

NO TEAM @ this juncture should catapult "2" places in the POLLS by virtue of only "1" game, and an EXTRA one (i.e. 13-vs-12) to boot!

Since USC was ranked #2, U of M ranked #3, & FA ranked #4 BEFORE today's UNFAIR 13th game, then each team should ONLY move UP "1" POLL PLACE, NOT 2!

Therefore U of M would have to move UP to #2 again, and rightfully so! FA should NOT be able to move up any more than 1 place from #4 to #3, which mathematically eliminates them from the BCS Championship game because NO team can vault "2" poll places by virtue of a 13th game!

    That leaves FA @ #3!

BCS Championship must be by virtue of its inherent design pit the #1 and #2 teams, which have to be #1 OSU and #2 U of M moving up ONLY ONE place from #3 today to #2 Sunday!

    M go Blue!

Florida is a conference champion. Michigan is not. If Michigan plays Ohio State again, then it is just a Big 10 or 11 play off game and only for that conference's championship. If Florida or Oklahoma plays Ohio State, then it is for a National Championship. Ohio State deserves a chance to win a national championship. We also need to see how well the Big 10 or 11 will do against highly ranked teams outside their conference, which is what the BCS games are suppose to be about. Another Michigan versus Ohio State game will be a very boring rematch of little interest to anyone outside the Midwest. I would not even watch it.

Florida or Michigan? Who cares. Ohio State will win it.

The game against Michigan was close - Ohio State turned the ball over 3 times and their defense wasn't as solid as it has been all year. It's not a sign of Michigan's stellar offense - it was a sign of Ohio State being tired from carrying the mounting pressure of being #1 for an entire season. Even with 3 turnovers Michigan couldn't get it done. With 1 ridiculous pass interference call Michigan couldn't score enough points.

Being rested and ready to play in Glendale you can expect the whole team to be in pique condition - whoever they play they'll still be #1 at the end of the night.

anyone that doesn't realize that any SEC team would drop a game or two to the Big Ten/Big 12/PAC 10 if they had to play the whole season in that conference is shortsighted. The SEC is tough. The Big Ten is tough. The PAC 10 and Big 12 are moth#@!*#$%@! tough. Don't tell me that Florida couldn't have lost to Wisconsin in Madison, Texas in Austin, Even Oregon in the swamp. It may seem more intense, (read: better football) for you because they are your rivals, but that is because they are your rivals. The 2 best teams playing for the national championship = OSU vs. UM. The best "fantasy bowl" matchups could be anything including FLA vs. OSU...UM vs USC...but do you want a best team at the end of the season or do you just want to spank one off...southern style.

Michigan had their chance and didn’t get the job done, Florida did. If Ohio plays Michigan again and wins did they prove they are best in the nation? No it just mean their better then Michigan. Let’s start by throwing out the numbers for a minute. The philosophy behind the BCS is to put the best two teams on the field for the last game of the year. It’s not conference champion vs. conference champion. If it works out that way fine, but if it doesn’t vote the two best teams in for the fans. I know that’s not going to happen for several reasons. Don’t get me wrong I am a Michigan fan first, but I’m also a college football fan too.

The top two reasons we won’t see the best two teams are history and money. First, the BCS ( I know I’m using that term loosely, I actually should say the human factor of the BCS) doesn’t want to shutout the SEC again. Living in the south I’ve heard my fair share of conspiracy theories of how the SEC is being held back. Most recently with Auburn. It’s funny to me that you don’t hear any other conference on TV complaining about their conference. They simply show up and play football and let the wins and losses speak for themselves. It’s absolutely a disgrace to sit and watch an exciting football game on national TV and have to be inundated with biased opinions. I think CBS should fire both Lundquist and Danielson. It’s not the fact that they said that Florida deserved to be there, anyone can make a case that they do. It’s the fact that I (as many others) felt like it was a full out plea to the voters to pick Florida and the SEC. That’s wrong… that’s where I think they crossed the line.

Secondly, the money. Let’s not fool ourselves, this is actually about money, sponsorship, and target markets. A single conference face-off would not have the national draw that a multi-conference would. Simple geography would tell us that. That also translates into nervous sponsors who are looking for advertising bag for their buck. Part of me wonders if this is why the national media has become some boisterous about the conference champions playing each other…. Maybe some network pressure through their advertisers???? I could be way off base, but I threw it out there.

I honestly think Florida with its coach front and center most recently will get the nod. Ever hear of the recency phenomenon? Fair? In my opinion, NO. We’ve all read the numbers on both teams and some don’t want to see a rematch because they don’t want the both won one controversy.. It’s failing again, so why doesn’t college football fix it for its fans? Ask the University Presidents that one. No conference wants to be totally shutout of the money in a bad year. So we get lopsided bowl games as a result.

I think Ohio State will be handed an early Christmas present in the form of Florida. It’s not if, it’s when Ohio State embarrasses Florida, the system will come under fire again. In fact I hope it’s such a one-sided game that people tune out before the half is over. I’ll go on record and assure you that this will not be USC and Texas, nor will it be a 3 point game. The simple fact is that Michigan will be jumped for second time in as many weeks after Florida beat the SEC’s second best team (sarcasm…LOL). All that said, Michigan has done nothing other than having a bye week and no Big Ten championship game. I wonder if they should be crying to the media too. Actually let’s face the fact that the SEC doesn’t have the upper echelon that the other conferences have. I’m sorry that recruiting and coaching won’t allow that to happen, so don’t hold that against the Big Ten.

    GO BLUE!!! (or Buckeyes)

The real question is: Did Florida do enough yesterday to pass Michigan in the human polls?

The Gators are probably going to be ahead of Michigan (just barely) in the computer averages, but they have to pass the Wolverines in the polls to get the BCS slot.

In that regard, having a conference championship game definitely worked in Florida's favor. I don't think any voters would give the nod to Florida if they had only seen their performance in Tallahassee & not the Arkansas game.

I just love those predictions on how Ohio St would embarrass FLA, blah, blah, blah. I can't figure out for the life of me why people like to under estimate SEC Champions! WTF??? Nobody has a problem admiting SEC is the best conference in CFB except for SOCAL and we all know he's an idiot. Just don't forget, FLA is the SEC Champions. I think they could handle the Big-10 Champ. I understood Marko's thread about Chris Leak, and how he can crack, but that doesn't mean his team doesn't deserve a shot. Ohio St. is a well disciplined team that would make FLA pay for mistakes, but if FLA goes into that game ready to bust some heads it won't matter. FLA would win.

    Now, on to business:

All things are not equal when debating this issue. You can see all data from the above posts supporting either UM or UF, and the simple fact is this: Michigan had its shot at Ohio State... period. They put up a great fight in a great game. Time to step aside and let a CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING Team take a shot.

Be graceful. Step aside. Play for third place and be happy that you do not play in the SEC, where your team would finish 9-3 or worse with the same schedule that UF played this year.

You’re starting to sound like TTjr, take your ball and go home. We’ll get a new shiny one.

That one play/foul (helmet to helmet) did happen and it was a penalty because he led with the helmet. It should have been a penalty in the other two games also. All the sports shows have said that, but they probably bleeped that part out in Ann Arbor.

OSU beat UM in every part of the game (score/passing/rushing/receiving); except turnovers and led most of the game by 10+ points, you want to play what ifs, what if the center/QB fumbles and the interception never happened, UM lost 10.

What screwed the BCS up after that game were the idiots that belong to the Harris poll that voted UM number two/three when they should have dropped to the cellar. Look at all the other “big game” losses and teams lost 5-10 spots. Polls are only as good as the idiots putting in the data.

The country is voicing its opinion via a poll of who should go to the big game. It is close, but UF has 53% of the nation's vote (on ESPN) so far today.

Its early yet. Most of the UF fans have not yet rolled out of bed, because we were up late watching our team WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE UNDISPUTABLE TOUGHEST CONFERENCE IN THE NATION! We play hard both on and off the field, you know. It's kind of a Florida thing.

By the way, I invite you to read Mark Schlabach's recent article on the UM / UF debate. He has all the stats and facts about both teams, and unlike us, this is his job. His opinion: No way should Michigan go.

Enjoy the debate. Here in the Sunshine State it is a nice 85 degrees and I am heading to the beach to bask in the sun and glory that is Florida.

Michael post #68. That is how little girls and sissys get their way, by whining and calling for do overs. Michigan is a very good and honorable team but doesn't need whiny fans like yourself making excuses for them. They know they lost the game fair and sqaure. The Buckeyes has some bad calls against them too "Pass Interference inside the 10" "Roughing the Center",(Who calls that). It doesn't matter what could have happened, What matters is what did happened and the Buckeyes offense was too much for Michigans D. No one in the country can cover all of those receivers and keep an eye on Pittman and Wells. It is impossible. Michigan is better than Florida, easily. I hope Ohio State does play them again so that we can make Mike Hart eat his words. When Ohio State wins, this will mark the pennicle of Buckeye Football.

    12-0 regular season
    1 Heisman - Troy Smith
1 Butkus Award - James Laurainitis
    2 wins against Michigan
    1 National Championship

It does not get better than that, ever!

I don't blame people for being jealous
    The truth hurts some times

    Go Bucks

It's not about what we want to SEE. It is about the 2 best teams, and if you don't think the two best teams are OSU and UM, you don't know what you are talking about.

Winning your conference is not a part of the system.

Currently Espn.com has tilted to UM with 51% of the vote.

This shouldn't even be close, but we'll have to wait it out until tonight.

    Here's why:
    1. UM beat 2 top ten teams (They're put there by the Polls and Computers that consider ROAD wins/losses, so don't complain about the opponent's SOS or worthiness, etc. - its all captured). UF beat only 1.

    2. By the end of today, both UM will have beaten 3 teams in the top 25 (when Penn St. replaces Hawaii), so don't gripe about facing "Ranked Teams" that proved to be paper tigers (Tennessee), or "Bowl Eligible" opponents. Wins vs 3 loss teams like Tenn and Arkansas equate to a win vs Penn St. (who had 4 losses, all to teams in the Top 10).

    3. UM lost to a team ranked AHEAD of them. UF lost to a team ranked BELOW them. Aren't we "supposed" to beat the lower ranked team?

    4. Everything else is just noise (We beat Vandy worse than you did, and all the other middle of the pack opponents is useless).

A comparison of QUALITY, from the Voters and Computers - not us, says that UM is the 2nd ranked team, and deserves a title shot.

Its not about the SEC, its about 2 teams. They're both worthy of comparison, but only one will go, and that one is UM. Hopefully we'll get a Playoff system where all teams at least get a deserving shot.

This debate is proving very interesting, with the BCS standings still waiting to be announced, let’s throw another wrinkle into this conversation. Michigan plays Ohio State in the BCS championship, Florida plays Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, and both win. Who’s national champion, Michigan, they would have beaten the #1 team in the land and end with just one lose, Florida, their the SEC champion and finish one win ahead of Michigan and Ohio, Ohio the only team they lost to would have been Michigan in the championship game and they beat them once already this year and are Big Ten Champions.

I can guaranty one thing the BCS supporters are hoping that Ohio wins the Championship, because if they don’t (and USC v. UCLA shows anything can happen), then we will be discussing this until next season.

Florida beat Arkansas who got BLOWN out by USC. The ONLY people that insist that the SEC is the best conference is the SEC.

Vegas put up the odds if Mich-FLA played. Michigan by 6pts.

If Florida got into the BCS Championship game, the Buckeyes would BLOW OUT the Gators hands down. Chris Leak would be torn apart with his ridiculous turnover tendencies. Michigan is by far the better team. They deserve to play for the title.

I still say how can Michigan be one of the two best teams in the nation if they aren't even the best team in their conference? Ohio and Florida both are conference champions in the two toughest conferences, they did what they had to do, Michigan didn't!!!! If Michigan and not Florida gets into the BCS Championship Game, then blow up the BCS and start letting them decide in it on the field.

For ye of little faith who don't the SEC is the TOUGHEST conference in college football, let me explain to you the facts of life.

The reason that the SEC is the toughest conference isn't because some of its teams are really good...it isn't because the SEC consistently has the best team in the nation...it isn't even because the SEC recruits better athletes.

The reason the SEC is the toughest conference is because if you don't bring your A-game to ANY conference game, you WILL get beat. Bringing your A-game every week requires both mental and physical toughness. This is why the SEC is the toughest conference, and also why "style points" don't exist in the Southeast.

In contrast, let's take a look at the Big Ten. Although the Big Ten has arguably the two best teams in the nation (and a pretty good team in Wisconsin), the rest of the teams are cakewalk teams. Sure, based on opponents records Michigan may have similar strength of schedule to Florida...but that's because win you add up the wins and losses in a conference...every conference is the same. Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose in every game. In reality, we know that Florida played a much tougher schedule than did Mcihigan.

Given a choice...any football coach would prefer playing two top ranked opponents and the rest be cakewalk teams rather than having to play a pretty good team nearly every week.

If you were a coach, which do you think would be easier.

    War Eagle!

Chris - Thanks for the "Shout Out"...and yes, it still stings

The human voters will have Michigan at #2 barely, and the computers will have Florida at #2. Plus, many human voters, who are averse to a rematch, may sway to Florida.

If I was a voter, it would be Florida for two simple reasons:

    (1) You have to be a conference champion to receive my vote to play in the national title game. (and yes, Notre Dame should be forced to join a conference.)

    (2) If Michigan wins a re-match, it renders the first game between OSU and Michigan meaningless.

    Jake,

Jeff Sagarin just put Michigan number 2 in the BCS poll and two other BCS polls have Michigan way above Florida. So that leaves 3 polls to Florida(maybe). If you dont have the human polls, the computer polls wont help the Gators.

If you are a voter, you are supposed to vote according to the bylaws of the process. Winning a conference is NOT part of the BCS process, nor is preventing a rematch. Why dont you people just vote like you are supposed to and be honest. Florida is a good team, but not in comparison to OSU or Michigan.

    Dumbass Gator Fans,
First of all, it is Ohio STATE...not Ohio. Secondly, Florida's offense sucks. Chris Leak is so bad that Urban Meyer had to take what should have been a redshirt freshman and play him on critical downs. Finally, Arkansas' has NO defense. Even LSU's meager offense put up over 40...which they hadn't done against a solid opponent all year.

Florida is NOT an elite team. The SEC IS an elite conference, however, and I think that Florida deserves all the credit in the world for getting out of there with just one loss (although we all know that they could have 2 or 3 more).

Florida has not faced an offense like OSU or Notre Dame this season (sorry Tennessee...not even close). My guess is that both will hang half-a-hundred on Florida. Florida will score, but only maybe 3 TDs (no feild goals...of course). Being decent on one side of the ball (in Florida's case, defensively) does not win big ball games against complete teams. I know. I root for Notre Dame. I like the Irish defense against Florida though. Chris Leak is terrible and Tebow is too dense for any long 3rd down situations.

Irish JT, like i said before, sign off line and shut up. Florida has not faced an offense like OSU, but u forgot to mention that OSU has not faced a defense like Florida's. OSU will not blow out UF, UF can keep games close with good defense. And also stop trying to say notre dame is good at anything, they already proved that they suck. I like the poll that 80% of americas say that ND does not deserve to play in a BCS game.

And know something about Florida before you criticize Tebow. He should not have been redshirted, Florida has no back up QB for leak besides him. And it gives him good experience to kick ass against teams next year, hopefully Notre Dame in a bowl game just to shut them up for another few years.

You know it is funny how much credit is given to conference championships when most of them don't even include the best teams in their own conference. Look at the Big 12 for instance. For at least the past 4 years the south has dominated the north in that conference, but because they have to have a rep from the north and a rep from the south the two best teams in that conference do not play each other. Both teams that played in the Big 12 championship last night lost head to head against Texas this year. So I don't think that you should use a conference championship as a reason for making it to a National Title game.
However, I don't think Michigan deserves another shot at Ohio State. The team that should be really steaming over getting screwed in any manner this year should be Oklahoma. They got shafted at Oregon or they would be in this conversation as well.
For anyone who has one loss you can't accuse any other team about not getting it done. If you would have "got it done" we wouldn't be talking about who might be in the game but who is in the game.

    Go Bucks!!

You guys love to make fun of meyer for arguing about florida getting a shot. How fair do you think it was to him when his Utah team went undefeated in 2004 and he had to argue just to make it to a bcs game in which his team beat the Big east Champs? He already has gotten screwed out of a championship once, he just doesn't want it to happen again.

Michigan had one shot to prove it deserved to be in the championship, in the game with ohio state, and they lost. I can already hear it, if (correction: When) Michigan loses again in glendale they will say, "it's our turn to win in a home game vs ohio state now, and prove that we are the number 2".

Florida had one shot to prove it deserved to be in the championship, in the game vs arkansas, and they shut down arkansas run attack and beat a great team.

If I was a voter, I could make my own internal rules. One rule I would have is: "A team is ineligible for the BCS title game if they do not win their conference."

Personally, I have no way to determine whether Florida or Michigan is the better team or more deserving team. But I do know this: On Nov. 18th, The Ohio State Buckeyes were better than Michigan and therefore should not have to play them again. Allowing the Wolverines a second chance is patently unfair to the Buckeyes.

It's happened many times and, I thought the BCS NC game was supposed to pit #1 against #2, not #1 against "most deserving because thy won their conference" or "#2 because no-one wants to see a rematch" or "#2 because it's more profitable if two teams from the same conference don't play in the NC game" or any other of he myriad of excuss people are flinging to explain why Michigan must be passed up. OU Fan:

OU lost to Oregon, got dominated by Texas, barely got by UAB (and this was back when you still had Adrian Peterson), squeaked by Texas A&M and Oklahoma State, and would beat any SEC team? I remember back when Oklahoma was still good, they needed a fake field goal to beat 3 - 8 Alabama 20 - 10. Oh yeah, what happened to OU at the end of that season? Lost to the SEC champs in the national title game for the first of two times in a row. Do you realize than an SEC team has not lost a bowl game with national title implications since 1997? If it wasn't for Texas, the Big 12 would be 0 for whatever in their last 4 or 5 national title games, and if it wasn't for Oregon, Oklahoma would be on their way to losing their 3rd straight national title game. So keep thinking that your team which already has two losses and could easily have 3 more could compete in the SEC. How many teams are ranked in the Big 12? How many teams are ranked in the Big 12 North? Now compare that with the SEC, especially when you consider that Nebraska will drop out and UGA will take their place in the next poll.

    Response to post #102:

Thee years ago, voters did not vote according to the rules when some of them voted USC #1 even though they weren't in the national title game.

Last year I got sick and tired of people saying that USC was going for its third straight BCS title.

In the 2003 season, a one-loss LSU got into the national title game over a one-loss USC because LSU had the tougher schedule. LSU upsets Oklahoma and we get a split national title. Hogwash. LSU is the only champ in 2003.

I don't hear USC fans conceding that their national title in 2004 could be split with Auburn, an undefeated SEC team that got left out of the reindeer games just because their pre-season ranking was not as high as USC or Oklahoma.

If voters are free to ignore the champion of the BCS game altogether, I could use my own value system to determine who I would vote for to face Ohio State.

Shit, I would vote all of the automatic BCS teams above Michigan:
    (1) Ohio State
    (2) Florida
    (3) Boise State
    (4) USC
    (5) Oklahoma
    (6) Louisville
    (7) wake Forest
    (8) Notre Dame
    (9) Michigan
    (10) LSU

Realitically, Boise State should actually play for the national title. I wonder if they would have gotten a shot if everyone had two losses instead of one. Not giving Boise State an opportunity despite being the only other unbeaten team means that they were essentially disqualified before the season even began. Hey, if George Mason can make the final four in men's basketball, then I think Boise State can play alongside the big boys.
