How to change the BCS
As I was making attempts to voice my opinion with BCS officials the thought of what my response should be after not getting any traction were natural. I suppose jumping on the legislation band wagon would be the natural response.
Except that I think it would be more fun to defend the BCS against congress than let them get involved --
You call the BCS un-American. It is at least as American as a two party system that systematically sidesteps any reasonable third party opinion. The formula used to determine the BCS participants is at least as accurate in reflecting the will of the college football fans as the electoral college is at determining who we believe our President should be.
Perhaps you are right. The BCS knows how to manage a budget. They only spend money they actually have. Their contracts only last 5 years and won't saddle our children and grandchildren with a lasting legacy of debt. This fiscal responsibility may be un-American.
Anyone who has been to grade school understands what is going on when an unpopular bully tries to earn respect by picking on a less popular target. The fact that the most popular and revenue generating sport in collegiate sports has a championship structure that is less popular than the US congress speaks more to the need for change than any legislation congress could advance.
-- Just saying, as a libertarian minded individual, it could be fun.
It has been suggested that the only thing the BCS will listen to is money. The only way to get their attention is to boycott their games. I tried telling heroin users after September 11th that their habit helps fund and support the terrorists that attacked our country. Telling college football addicts to give up the final few games, with the best teams, will meet just as much success.
It is April and I am already wanting to see how things turn out this next season. A protest of the BCS games can not work. It just wouldn't have any support.
So then it hit me...
The BCS meets this time every year. Football fans have been neglecting their basic need for a tail gate party for 4 months now, with just as long to go.
If the BCS is truly as unpopular as I believe it to be, at least the concept that it is not ideal is very popular, couldn't corporate sponsors be found to put their name on an event to rally for change?
Why not have a tail-gate competition at the site of the BCS annual meeting the Saturday before they meet?
The Championship System Protest Party, presented by _________.
A beer sponsor would definitely be needed.
Events:
Tail gate competition:
- Team with the most fans (must be wearing school colors and logo)
- Team with the best food
- Team with the best co-eds present
Public Discussion:
- Allow parties to present ideals any structure should conform to.
- Allow parties to present their structural proposals for consideration.
Petition:
- Collect signatures to present to the BCS administrator that a change is needed, with a place to indicate which change each signatory feels is most important.
A large screen TV with college football highlights from the previous year would be awesome.
College football is extremely popular. If the BCS sees first hand that people are willing to gather, in the spirit of fun and sportsmanship, to express the need for something better and that such an event is marketable to corporate entities things might begin to change.
If you are interested in actually helping implement such an event next year in Arizona contact benjamin.prather@gmail.com.
Thoughts and ideas? Events that could be added to make the event better?
