Ohio State - Michigan moving to after Thanksgiving?

The Big10 Conference announced that a change to the long held scheduling format that will allow conference teams one additional week of play.

The move, which was adopted by the university presidents, allows teams to use a 13-week scheduling format beginning in 2009. The Big 10 coaches have been pushing for the move since 2006, so that the teams would be able to have a bye week in the schedule, rather than twelve straight weeks of games.

The change means that the annual Ohio State - Michigan game could potentially be moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, if both schools agree.

Chipman said teams may choose to move a game to after Thanksgiving next year if it is cleared through the Big Ten, but Ohio State won't be changing its schedule. Though conference schedules have been set through 2011, the presidents instructed the league office to start adjusting the schedules in 2009.

This should decrease the amount of whining we have to hear regarding the amount of time that transpires between OSU/Michigan's last regular season game and bowl season. Unfortunately, it will increase the amount of whining over the cold weather they must play in up north. From my perspecting - measured in whining - this move is a zero-sum-gain.

I always thought they should take a bye week.

One step in the right direction.

If they reschedule the game to the day after Thanksgiving, they can rename that day to "Black & Blue" Friday.

I do not agree with this. I hate it. It's just another step towards a conference championship game & playoff system.
The one thing that this will be good for is giving teams less of a break between their bowl games and the end of the season.

This will definately help the Big 10 during Bowl season. It was always absolutely ridiculous to end the season two full weeks before anybody else ever did. And, why can't these teams handle a little snow anyway? It's not like they don't live in it. Pro teams play in the snow all during the late season. It's not a problem. What is a problem is that these schools never took advantage of "bye weeks" in order to get their teams healthy and better prepare for some big games. Most all other schools actually use about two bye weeks during the season in order to benefit their programs. It's a good move.

So Arkansas and LSU might have some competition.
