Former UVa, Navy coach interviewing at VMI?

Former Virginia football coach George Welsh has spoken with VMI about the vacant head coaching position at the academy, as reported by two Richmond, Va. TV stations Wednesday night. VMI fired Cal McCombs at the end of the year, following seven seasons and a 19-60 record.

Michael Clark, HBC at Bridgewater College, withdrew his name from the candidate list this weekend, leading to speculation that the Welsh meeting with VMI may be an informal interview. It would seem an odd place for Welsh, given that the academy hasn't had a winning season since 1981, and just four winning seasons since 1962.

This may not be as strange as you think.

He reportedly was angling to get on the short list for the Temple job.

May just be a case like Dick Tomey last year - guy wants to end his career as a head coach, so he's willing to do it just about anywhere.

Welsh's name keeps popping up in other places like Temple. Temple hired a UVa assistant. Liberty hired a UVa asst. and he and Holtz were both mentioned there.

I think he's being consulted for advice in who to hire possibly instead of being hired.

It's not Virginia Military Academy...it's Virginia Military Institute!
