Atlanta to wait on second bowl game

The Atlanta Sports Council has opted to delay a bid for a second bowl game in the Georgia Dome this year, electing instead to revisit the effort in time for the 2006 conference bowl contracts.

Under the original concept, the new bowl would be a "step-below" the Peach Bowl, played on or around December 27th and featuring an ACC-Big10 match up.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the ACC and Big10 expressed interest in the game, but asked the bowl to hold off for now - allowing both conferences the opportunity to revisit their bowl commitments next year.

The ACC currently has six bowl commitments and is seeking a seventh. The Big10 has seven bowl tie-ins, but would reportedly consider dropping one in favor of the new Atlanta game.

The goal of a second Eagle in Atlanta notes that this would be an outstanding opportunity for a team like Boston College to break into the ACC bowl lineup.

Does the delay mean the ACC is waiting to cut ties with Boise?

Jeff I think your right. The ACC has the huge head now since they decimated the Big East, they are looking a high Profile bowl game with Big 10. I Think they will cut ties in Boise so the Big East will play in Boise next season

Is it an additional bowl for the Big East if they do that?

Otherwise, the ACC might be cutting off their nose to spite their face in the Meineke or Gator. Maybe send the Big XII to Boise and find somebody closer to the east coast for the Tangerine.

The ACC may drop Boise for the sake of dropping Boise, but --as a general policy-- they are looking to expand their bowl list rather than contract it.
