San Diego pitches second bowl game

On Tuesday, the Holiday Bowl Committee will request certification for a second bowl game in San Diego that would be played before Christmas. The Poinsettia Bowl would be played at Qualcomm Stadium on December 22. The Holiday Bowl is scheduled for December 29 this year.

An unnamed title sponsor has been found in the area and the game would probably be televised nationally (but no TV deal has been reached yet.)

The Mountain West Conference has shown interest in the past for a pre-Christmas game in San Diego for a MWC team versus an at-large team. The WAC, Conference USA and Navy have all sent letters of support for the new bowl.

The new game would allow San Diego State to possibly play in a hometown bowl game; something the Aztecs and bowl officials both wouldn't mind seeing happen. Bowl officials also spoke favorably about the possibility of BYU, Wyoming or Colorado State playing in the game. Those teams haven't played in San Diego for postseason bowls since the Holiday Bowl signed a contract with the Big 12 and Pac 10 in 1998.
