Silicon Valley Bowl loses certification

The NCAA has decided not to renew the certification of the Silicon Valley Football Classic for 2005. The game lasted five years as a matchup between teams from the WAC and the Pac-10. Fresno State played in the first four games. Because of a lack of bowl eligible teams from the two conferences, the 2004 game featured Troy and Northern Illinois. Only 6,000 people showed up for a game that started at 8 p.m. in a storm.

Bowl officials, including the commissioner of the WAC, hope to bring the game back for 2006.

The NCAA has approved the certification of 28 bowl games for the coming season. They also heard an initial application for a bowl game to be played in Toronto. The committee in charge of certification expressed concern with the attendance levels at the Las Vegas and New Orleans bowls despite recent improvement.

The Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego was approved as a new bowl game.
