SEC versus PAC - 10 comparison!
9 of 12 SEC schools are bowl eligible. 75%
8 of 10 SEC schools are bowl eligible. 80%
Hidden story line: PAC - 10 schools play 9 conference games, SEC schools play 8. So ... BIG ADVANTAGE TO THE PAC - 10!!!Now for my arbitrary, much hated 9 wins standard.
PAC - 10: USC and Cal. 2 teams
SEC: Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU. 4 teams. Now I grant you that either Oregon or Oregon State (both 7 - 4) have a shot, as they play each other and then have a bowl game. But Tennessee is 8 - 3, Kentucky (who plays Tennessee) is 7 - 4, as is UGA. The PAC - 10 will have a maximum of 3; the SEC could have as many as six. BIG ADVANTAGE: SEC!Head to head: already established. USC killed Arkansas; Auburn, Tennessee, and LSU killed WSU, Arizona, and Cal. All were matchups of teams that will go to bowl games, and USC/Arkansas and Cal/Tennessee were matchups of teams with the same record. NONE of the games were competitive. Result? SEC 3, PAC - 10 1. BIG ADVANTAGE: SEC!
So, on the basis of my gratutiously selective, self - serving, unscientific, thoroughly biased, and completely unneeded, unwanted, and unproductive analysis: SEC is TOPS OVER THE PAC - 10 AGAIN! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Just kidding PAC - 10 guys. The truth is that you guys played 9 conference games where SEC teams played 8, and despite that you guys were still able to get a higher percentage of teams bowl eligible than the SEC was. And that does not even include Washington, who lost a tough nonconference game to Oklahoma AND lost their starting QB and STILL finished 5 - 7. So in reality, the PAC - 10's season was more respectable than the SEC's, even if it honestly does seem as if the SEC had more quality teams at the top. Oh yeah, and I think that any matchup between USC and the top SEC schools (LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Arkansas), USC wins 3 out of 5. At least.

Fair post. The "cannibalization" of the Pac-10 did take place this year. It's pretty amazing actually what happened. Heck, USC even lost a game. Cal and Oregon were going real nicely and then they took some losses. How bout Arizona? Amazing! But, you could see that they had a pretty decent defense early on. Playing brutal teams early, like LSU and USC, can really help a team improve is my opinion.

32 Bowl Games, 64 slots?
Over half the teams get a bowl slot...so being Bowl eligible is really no big deal.
My beef is that between the 14 tie ins that the Pac 10 and SEC have, none are against each other!
I'd love to see Oregon and Kentucky square off somewhere while Rich Brooks is still the coach of the 'Cats. What a hoot that would be...

Trojan Hoss:
Yep, I'm with you. Thirty-two bowls and 64 teams. Does anybody understand how bad #64 really is? This is ridiculous. Below Top 40 might be okay. That is about the top 1/3 of all teams. As it stands now - very average teams are qualifying. It's stupid but they want the money. I don't personally beleive in this "you got to win so many games" theory either. That is why many teams front load Div.II teams. These teams aren't even average at that point. They ought to just go ahead and position the bowl games based on your rankings. For instance, Washington at 5-7 is probably rated around #45 in the country. Nineteen teams that are not that good will go ahead of them. I'm sure their are probably several other 5-7 teams that fall into the same catagory - that would be rated below #64. I liked the "old days" where you actually had to "earn" a bowl game. Back then - there was only about 7-8 bowl games anyway. That's when it all meant something. Now, it means nothing to go to a bowl. You hear this all the time, "The coach of such and such team will probably be able to keep his job if his team qualifies for a bowl game". Why should he? Because he finished up mediocre at best? Is that all that some programs are interested in? If that's what some schools are all about - then they deserve to get smashed by the "powerhouse" teams year in and year out and should never end up in a bowl game.

Marshall (5-6)
UTEP (5-6)
Akron (5-6)

Kent State (6-5)
Northern Illinois (6-5)
Arizona (6-5)
Arizona State (6-5)
UCLA (6-5)

How many teams are six and six??? I count 23 that are either now 6-6 (season done), 6-5 or 4 and could finish 6-6 or 5-6 or 4-6 and could finish 6-6..
Out of these teams I'd be almost certain to say over half or at least 12 teams had played a 1AA team on their schedule.
That said and done, you could wipe out 12 of these teams instantly from bowl consideration if you just simply didn't allow 1AA wins to count toward bowl eligibility.

Tommy T, et al: I was chatting on another blog, when somebody came up with a couple of good ideas. 1. If a Div-1 team schedules a Div-2 team, while a win or loss counts towards a team's final record/standing, the Div-1 team has to win at least one more game to become bowl eligible. 2. All major BCS conference teams have to schedule at least two teams from other major BCS conferences. The Big East would have to schedule three, as they only have 8 teams, and have more non-conference room. Of the top 3 B.E. teams, only Louisville would qualify with 6 wins; WVU & Rutgers would have to win 8 each. Likewise, so would AR, Auburn, FL, LSU, & TN have to win 8 each.
Now, these rules don't exist. If put into place, they might go a long way to quelling a lot of the schedule criticism both within this & other blogs, not to mention the media. But, as you can see, everyone would have to follow them.

The Reasons I like lots of Bowl Games:
1) Hey, it's for the kids to have some fun and doesn't hurt anyone. It's just a meaningless exhibition game in 31 of the 32 games - and since CF doesn't have a pre-season, why not let a bunch of teams that don't get to play for the prize have a chance at capping a disappointing season with a win?
2) Less-well known teams get a chance for some national exposure, which is why teams like Virginia Tech, Boston College, Oregon, etc. with no powerhouse history to slowly rise to being seen as the good teams they are today - thus increasing the parity - which is a very good thing.
3) The Bowl games are great indicators of conference-to-conference strength, since they are usually on neutral fields, pit similar-calibur teams together, and the large number of games leads to the decrease in variability due to potential mismatches.
More will come when I can really thimk about it :)

This is more of a running thing between me and So Cal Clippers, So Cal USMC, The Mayor, and Tommie Trojan more so than a general thing. I also predicted before the season that the extra conference game thing would harm the PAC - 10, but it looks like it may have actually helped them, as more of their teams qualified for bowl games this year than last.

Gerald:
That's only because we didn't have to take on any other OOC foes - thus avoiding ourselves that one extra loss each. Playing that one extra Pac-10 game allowed for us to go 5-5, rather than the 0-10 that we would normally have accumulated. Therefore, more Bowl eligible teams. Pretty smart of the Pac-10 commissioner's - being that they know that our conference sucks worse than any others. Thank God, we didn't have to get beat up by anymore of those Mountain West and WAC teams.

Best game last weekend and greatest comeback victory in the final seconds was The Rice Owls vs East Carolina.Wow saw it replayed last night on CSTV.Todd Grahm should get Coach of the Year.
The most improved team went from 1-10 2005 to
6-5 and still counting.Started the season 0-4 with losses to Houston-real close,Texas, UCLA and Florida State. The players have fought hard all season.Hope Yall go Bowling Hookem-HornsZac said:

Regan: The 1st point you made in post 11, is an ancillary benefit. And to be honest with you, if we're going to go through all this, it should be for the players. Truth is, however; bowls are big money making affairs, just like conference championship games. That was the reason the ACC invited 3 teams to join them. Not only did they want to beef up the football side of the house, they wanted to have a lucrative, money-making conference championship game. The Big 10 (has 11 teams) wants the same thing. Why haven't they invited a 12th team? The team they want, Notre Dame, keeps saying, "No."
As for the number of bowls, I must admit; I think (currently) there are a few too many. However, if there were a play-off, and bowl games were used during play-off rounds 1-?, there wouldn't be too many bowl games. In fact, there'd be just enough.

Hey Jeremy #6
Oklahoma State Cowboys are a lot better team than a 6-5 record would indicate, they might finish 6-6 after this weekend. They had a real close loss to a very good A&M team, Played Texas a purty good game and beat Nebraska better that USC. They completely annhilated a good Baylor team. The Cowboys face the Sooners this weekend.
I dont care if they end up .500 They can beat anybody. They would probably be a one loss team in another conference like Big East.

Listen to the TomCat:
He knows what he's talkin' about. Oklahoma State has a great offense and I have them at #30 overall. I also only have Oklahoma by +3 this weekend. That is too close to call in the Cowboys house. This one smells of upset. Especially if Oklahoma State wants to seal a Bowl Invite. Again, I have a gripe with this bowl system and it's required amount of wins. Oklahoma State is definately good enough to be rated in the top half of the 64 teams invited to Bowl games. No way I leave these guys out if they end up 6-6.

Tomcat: Get a hold of that OK St AD and have him set something up. I doubt seriously any of the Big East teams would duck the Cowboys. Come to think of it, TX/WVU wouldn't be a bad match-up. Think your Horns are up to it? Go Mountaineers!!!

I do not like the bowl tie-ins. I miss the back room wheelings & dealings between teams and bowls that used to go on before these current rules were adopted. I would like to have the opportunity to play in different locations and against teams from different conferences. The Outback, Capitol One and Chick-fil-a bowls are great but not every year.

Hey Zac Sounds great to me.WV has a good solid team and should land a really good bowl this year.
The Horns,Sooners, Huskers, Red Raiders,Aggies,
Tigers,Cowboys,or if you like Buffs, Bears and Wildcats would love to play yall.
The XII teams played some Pac-10,Big Ten, ACC and SEC teams however as far as I can remember this year the only Big East vs XII matchup was
Louisville vs K-State and Louisville won.
The XII is very competitive and even though K-State beat Ok State and Texas, they lost to Kansas and Baylor. Yes I'd like to see alot more Big East vs XII matchups in the future.
UT has TCU,UCF and Rice sheduled next year and Arkansas in 08, 09.
With home and home the last two years against Ohio St.I can understand them sheduling La Laf,N Tex and Rice during the last couple of years. I would love to see Rutgers back in Austin or UConn or whoever. The Houston Bowl should be XII vs Big East, we will see who gets invited.

But if OSU losses to Oklahoma then they go 3-5 in confernce, and your packing a nine point lose to Houston who is out of conference USA so do not bash the Big East if you can't beat them.

According to the current BCS standings, there is no debate that there will be an Ohio State vs. Michigan rematch in Glendale on January 8th. This may not be an attractive game to certain poll voters, but it is the most fair outcome of the situation. If USC wins out, they still shouldn't leap-frog Michigan because they lost to Ohio State by 3 points. USC lost to an unranked Oregon State team. That is why there will be a rematch of Michigan-Ohio State in the BCS National Championship game. Mark May and Brent Musburger are the most biased sports commentators I've ever heard. They disgust me.

Advantage how? With that added 9th Confernece-game, PAC teams as a whole, assured themselves a .500 record in that 12th game allowed/added by the NCAA this season!!! WHEREAS teams from other Conferences all loaded-up on West Carolina's, and Monroe's, and Utah State's... in other words THEY ADDED AN AUTOMATIC WIN to their Record, er, "Fluff".

1. You can be any conference homer, all that matters is the teams. You can dis the Big Ten but if they have Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin all 11-1 or 12-0 how can all three not go to the BCS? Who care if they are from the same conference?
2. UM will NOT rematch tOSU. Y?
a. They already lost (you say by 3?)
b. tOSU turned the ball over (unforced in or near the red zone that was caused by the centers cast)

Mayor, I know they did bro. I was just responding to a previous post by So Cal. He went on another one of his rants about the SEC and the road schedule. That trash was old last summer. Yeah, USC looked good last night. It sure would have been nice if some of Quinn's receivers would have caught some of his passes. 6 dropped passes. 2 dropped passes were sure touchdowns. I'm not saying Quinn played perfect or anything like that, but he can't throw the ball and catch it too. Notre Dame also needs to hire a def coor who can coach some pass defense. The USC receivers were WIDE open all night long and had way too much cushion. Terrible pass defense. I was hoping Quinn could get that game, but the better team won. I hear Charlie Weis is on the hot seat. Lou Holtz is on his way back to South Bend. Props to USC. They looked good. T-Mac

T-Mac,
Gerald started with the comment on this issue, not me. Im actually the guy who was trying to (jokingly) shut him up about the whole thing with my REPLY -- as he was meandering towards the conf-vs-conf thing.
T-Mac, the blown-call in the Oklahoma-Oregon game...
Those SAME OFFICIALS that "screwed Oklahoma" in that game, "screwed OREGON" in that very same game!!! That 3rd Quarter TD that Oklahoma got, ~arguably~ should have been OVER TURNED; an obvious Offensive Pass-Interference by the Oklahoma WR. The Refs missed That Call too (In Favor of Oklahoma), and it was just as Obvious a miss-call in the replay as any! But because it happened in the 3rd Quarter, people think that they can over-look it Easier than they could when a bad-call happens deep in the 4th Quarter (its human nature I guess, but its inconsistent logic, flawed rational). A bad-call is a bad-call... there are countless of 'shoulda/wouldas' in every game. And by the way, this being the 1st full season of Instant Replay in College Football, Im guessing that the Oregon-Oklahoma blown-Replay-call is just the first of many (that caught our attention) that will follow.*Sidenote* I say ~arguably~ in facetious quotation because, all-in-all, I dont let bad-calls be an excuse one way or another for ANY TEAM; Im pointing this out for THOSE WHO DO! and who also like to be SELECTIVE with their "Crying about Refs", or whatnot. Bad-calls happen in CFB, theres no excuse-making from any side - Think; The Katrina Catch that was never CAUGHT!@ in the 2005 LSU-ASU matchup that decided the game... bad-call or not, LSU Won The Game, thats it.

Is USC that good or is Notre Dame just that bad at pass defense? Just curious. Notre Dame looked like a joke last night.
Also, why does every analyst keep saying that Calvin Johnson is the best receiver in football? Jarrett catches everything that the booty boy throws at him. Calvin Johnson couldn't even get open against the DAWGS yesterday. I would take Jarrett over Johnson anyday. The ACC is a joke. The DAWGS are down this year and we beat what will be the ACC champions. You gotta love it! GO DAWGS!!

ND has a weak secondary, everyone with a passing game showed it - even in several games that ND won.

GA Boy:
Your right about Jarrett. He makes every secondary look silly. Try playing EA Sports NCAA 2007. Be USC and all you got to do is throw it to Jarrett five times and you got five TD's. Even EA Sports understood it before the season began.
Kevin:
Anytime you get far out in front of an opponent - they're gonna throw it the rest of the game. Notre Dame has had some huge leads where the other team was gonna throw constantly. It's practically impossible to get constant pressure on the QB under those circumstances. Therefore, there will be lots of "prevent defenses" and massive amounts of yardage totals accumulated. Notre Dame's pass defense was certainly better than #81 in the country in my opinion. It was USC's defense that overwhelmed Notre Dame and caused them to work very hard for anything. As bad as Brady Quinn's number looked - I still think that he is the best QB I've seen in the last few years. Better than Leinart? Yes! I put him in the catagory of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer and Donovan McNabb. He will be all that in the Pro's. It's too bad he did not play for a little better team in college.

I just saw this Tommie...
I would hate to have to whip out my Idaho State Vandals three time MNC EA sports NCAA Football 2007 Dynasty Mode team and show you the beating I put on USC evertime I reconfigure my schedule to add as many ranked teams as possible...
Jarrett couldn't do a thing against my Vandals...
Guess that shows you how much a video game knows...

That's some funny stuff, man! And, I can see that you know your game. But, I just played Oregon State over the weekend and smoked them 46-0. So, I guess we really should be undefeated. I must assume that the zebras really cheated us in that game in lieu of this new score. Just to make sure your not jivin' me, I'm gonna have to add a 13th game, the Idaho Vandals.
You gotta send Jarrett long, dude! I don't know what the silly computer thinks it's doin' - but Jarrett has to go long. You can also hit Fred Davis over the middle about 75% of the time. I will say this: Ohio State is #1 on EA Sports NCAA 2007. I haven't played the Vandals yet - so, maybe they are right there with Ohio State.Tommie T

Look at this
Explain to me why we are not picked to go to the Cotton Bowl as the Big 12 number 2? We have the same Big 12 record as Nebraska and the same overall record and have beaten them (at home) so we own the tie-breaker. It isn't that they won the North because Oklahoma had been picked to play in the Cotton Bowl before we screwed up against Kansas State and the aggots. (not that this really matters but) After Nebraska loses to ou won't we have one less loss than them?A&M as the Big 12 #3? Texas is 6-2 and A&M is 5-3. We only lost to them once, right?
The payout for the Gator Bowl last year was 2.5 million and the Cotton Bowl will be 3 million. I think we are getting screwed again. Once by our offensive coordinator who called consecutive quaterback sneaks (and effectively knocked Colt out of the season) and again by the ridiculous college football bowl system.
Now, I don't think we could beat Rice the way we played against out last two Big 12 opponents, but this makes no sense.

They really should not count D1AA victories towards bowl eligibility, that could knock a few off right there
