Gill staying at Buffalo

In a rather anti-climatic announcement, the Buffalo Bulls will be keeping coach Turner Gill - at least for the 2009 season. Gill agreed to a contract extension at Buffalo and will not be interviewing for any other job openings.

The new deal was announced by the school on Tuesday, and is a reward for a first-time coach who in three years turned around a laughingstock Bulls program that won its first Mid-American Conference title this season and will face Connecticut in the International Bowl at Toronto on Jan. 3. And the extension comes after Gill was a candidate for openings at Auburn and Syracuse.

Gill's stock is only going to continue to rise. He took a cellar dweller to the MAC championship in three seasons. I'm not certain that the Bulls will be the pre-season favorites for 2009, but you have to think that Gill will have them ready to defend the title.

I still hold that Nebraska missed the boat in not hiring Gill in favor of Pelini, but that pales in comparison to Chizik-gate.
