Clemson refuses QB Schaeffer's pledge
Clemson recruiting site TigerIllustrated has confirmed that former Tennessee QB Brent Schaeffer planned to transfer to Clemson as reported on Fanblogs; however, they are reporting that Clemson will not accept his pledge and will not offer a scholarship to Schaeffer.
Instead, Clemson will instead bank on the verbal committment of high school QB Michael Wade to supplement the existing QBs: JR Will Proctor, RS-F Cullen Harper, RS-F Tribble Reese, and starter SR Charlie Whitehurst, because Clemson now feels certain that they will get a committment from high school junior QB Will Korn in the next week. According to the report, Korn will be the only class of 2007 QB that Clemson will sign.
So...it now appears that Schaeffer -who had previsouly narrowed his choices to just Clemson and South Florida- must decide if he will transfer to the Big East's USF or look elsewhere.

I understand that he was talking to Clemson and they appeared very receptive. If he had committed to CU in June, they probably would have taken him. But now they have talked to Korn and it looks like they'll get Korn (who is much more talented), so the waiting game backfired on Schaeffer.

I think they did back off of him after he expanded his list in June and the Korn discussions. There are some people who think the negative publicity over Schaeffer's legal issues after it first came out Clemson would consider taking him. There may still be some of that involved but not as much as some people think.

Brent was great for us here in Tennessee, sad that he made some bad choices. Reminds me of Branndon Stewart, who came in with Peyton, he left, had to sit out a year, and never really had enough time at A&M to amount to much. The huge difference was Branndon was a model player and left by choice, not because of disciplinary problems. I will never understand how some of these kids throw opportunities away, but I guess the key word here is "kids".

I will agree I thought Brent did and excellent job coming in as a true freshman and playing in an unusual rotation for the Vols. Also the Vols have a tough schedule and I think he performed rather well. Reminded me of a novice Mike Vick. I think the Vols will be a little more stable and got a better payoff by sticking with Ainge but it would have been nice to see Brent stay in the line up maybe switch to WR/QB. Im afraid that Clemson may have made a huge mistake by turning him down and relying on a commitment by a Juinor in HS.

Why did Brent leave UT? I'm not a UT fan, but I wanted to follow that situation w/Ainge & Brent. If two QBs are supposedly even (talent-wise), then most coaches prefer stability than helter-skelter. In other words: If Brett Farve & Dan Marino were in coming freshmen at Quaterback State University; more than likely the coach would give the nod to Marino. That's just how they think.

Hey Pat,
As Rick said in an earlier post, Brent Schaeffer had some disciplinary problems at UT. I don't recall all the details, but I think he was involved in some fights that broke out between UT football players and UT frat boys last year.
UT head footballcoach Phil Fulmer kept giving Brent second chances until enough was enough and he decided to kick Schaeffer off the team.
You can find a more accurate recount of the details and facts of the story at the official UT athletics Web site (utsports.collegesports.com) in the archives of the Knoxville News Sentinel and The Tennessean dailies in Tennessee.

This guy is talented ! Brent is playing for our local junior college, College of the Sequoias in Visalia,Ca. Our team has been bad in the last few years but with Brent at the helm we are now 4-0 and rated in the nation for junior colleges.
Brent leads the state with 13 TD's. Also in 76 pass attempts this year he has yet to throw an interception. He has some fancy footwork too that reminds me of Michael Vick.
Next home game I'm taking my video camera to record him because one day he could make the pros, he looks that promising.

Do not believe everything you read about Brent. Yes he got in some trouble, but Fulmer wanted him to play other positions. Brent wants to only play QB and the coach held getting off the hook over his head to play those other positions. Brent walked while other UT players who committed offences just as wrong walked out of the court room and onto the football field.
If you ask his family, they will tell you that if they had to do it again, he would be at NC State.
His family claims they have no idea where he will go after his JUCO experience.

Saturday we lost our first game of the season with Brent at the helm again. We lost a crazy game 66-60. Brent threw for 424 yards and six TD's and also ran for 133 yards and another TD. That's the good news, the bad news is with a chance to win the game in the closing seconds he ran a QB keeper and was stopped at the 3 and couldn't get back quick enough to spike the ball and run another play. This guy is exciting to watch.
