You stay classy, Tommy Bowden
Isn't there an old saying... "It's better for everyone to think that you're an idiot than to open your mouth and prove them right"?
Someone should impart that on Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden, who gave a long distance slap to Lloyd Carr and the Michigan Wolverines following CU's lackluster performance against Furman.
Furman recovered two onside kicks, passed for more yards (384-377), held the Tigers to just 60 yards rushing and recorded five sacks.Bowden was a little perturbed at the questioning of a 28-point win and spun it back at the Wolverines.
"We won. That's not something Lloyd Carr can say," Bowden said to reporters after the game.
Ah, yes. The old deflect & duck defense. Classy, classy, classy.
At least the Detroit Free Press had the stones to retort.
Guess all those Peach Bowl appearances have gone to Clemson coach Tommy Bowden's head.

I know Tommy Bowden personally, and used to see him every day. He IS actually a very classy, and respectful guy. I really don't have a problem with what he said. A statement like that would be commonplace for Tommy's in state counterpart, but somehow this is being covered. That doesn't make sense to me. Although hypocrisy is quite prevalent in the media, so I guess I need to learn to expect it.
I haven't really been much of a fan of Tommy Bowden as a coach, and until we win all of the games that we should, I won't like him. However, as a person he is a great guy and I have a lot of respect for him.
Obviously, some fans will see this as me simply trying to stick up for a fellow Clemson guy. In a way, yes I am; but really I'm just sticking up for a good guy overall. I've always said that our baseball coach is a jack@ss and Carolina has a complete class act as a head coach. I would quickly stand up for Ray Tanner's character, just as I did here with Bowden.
The bottom line is what he said is the truth, no matter how you try to spin it. I wonder if the Detroit Free Press would like to see Clemson play Michigan right now? I certainly wouldn't mind it.

I fully agree. Tommy Bowden is a great person. He's usually very classy and respectful to everyone.
You also bring up a good point about Tommy's in state counterpart saying much worse things.
However, this little cheap shot IS out of character for Tommy. Even though Tommy is a great person, this still has to be classified as a blow below the belt.

I also thought Tommy Bowden's comments about Lloyd Carr were classless. Last year TB made an embarrassingly petty, jealous comment about Steve Spurrier getting a pay raise. And after the FSU game when the reporter asked TB on national TV, what it meant to him to have his dad (Bobby) say that he did a great job, Tommy replied, "It doesn't happen very often." To me came off as criticism about his dad's personality-- though I gave Tommy the benefit of the doubt hoping that he meant something else. Also this year, he made some comments about the QB situation that must have hurt Harper's confidence and security. Basically TB shouldn't even be allowed to talk to the press. He doesn't seem to think before he speaks. He sets a bad example for the players with his mouth.

Clemson Joe,
Yes, you're right I am a WVU Fan and I've never had anything bad to say about any of the Bowdens period.
However, this was classless and he didn't have to go that route.
I may have went a little overboard with the whole #1 asshole list but he definitely needs to realize that was uncalled for.
I just think that there were many different ways to go about explaining a sub par performance.
Example: "Well I tell you what Furman came to play today and they played hard".
Another example: "Wow, what a year of college football so far.....shewwwwww".
I think those were more logical choices.....

1) Wonder why Kevin did not post what the FSU coaches had to say after the Clemson loss... I am begining to see what you Gator fan's are complaining about.
2) RazzMaTazz, if you are going to post something like you did on post #5 get it right
Reporter: what does it feel like to beat your father at FSU
Tommy: I don't know I have never done it before, for that matter Clemson does not do it often. This last time was 1989.
RazzMaTazz, he complimented his father and the whole FSU program. And the comments about Harper are answering questions about Korn. Go back where ever you came.
3) I am sorry Tommy said that. He should not have said that. But I have to wonder why the Atlanta, Columbia, Charlotte, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Roanoke and Charleston papers did not run the story? These papers have a great deal of ACC coverage.
4) BO BO, on a lighter note. I bet Furman could take Michigan. Or give them a good game. Those schools from the Southern Conference are tough. I remember Ga. Southern giving Georgia fits not too long ago.

1st and Nole,
Vic Koening was very offended after Jimbo Fisher said the FSU beat themselves and should have won the game. He did not give the other team credit..... Same thing Tommy did. But in fairness to Tommy... the comment was made praising the Southern Conference(I think Kevin knew that) .... in other words he was saying "yes they are good, at least we beat a team from the Southern Conf. Michigan did not..... Heck, he gets it honest. Not from Bobby but from Mom...

Cock n Misfire,
I was waiting for you to chime in. A 28 point win is not bad. Do you think LSU is going to get 3 picks like SC State? Are you concerned at all that LSU is going to beat you? are you still predicting a 31-17 Gamecock win?
The Shamecocks are going to have to play a whole lot better than they did against SC State if they are going to beat LSU.
I did not know South Carolina sucked that bad. A mid-level team from the MEAC and you only won 38-3?1st_and_NOLE said:

Koening probably overreacted. Fisher gave Clemson a lot of credit but at the same time he criticized his own team for not winning the game when they could/should have on certain drives. There's no doubt Clemson played great but there's also no doubt FSU had several chances to win the game but didn't execute.

I wish I had a nickel for every time someone got caught saying something at the spur of the moment in public without getting a chance to think and it gets taken out of context and blown out of proportion.
Now in the YouTube and Blog eras, I'd really be piling on some real dough.

1st and Nole,
the thing that bothered me about the FSU win was how our coaches let the game get away.
With 2:09 to play in the third we are up 24-3 and have the ball 2nd and 6 at the FSU 32. We hand off to Davis and he picks up the first down at the FSU 22. A hold brings it back, then a sack and then a bad snap when we punt. I really believe if we just run the ball and kick a fg... we go up 27-3 and I am not sure you have it in you to come back. Our coaches must do a better job.Regan said:

1st_and_NOLE (#19):
For the record, you're right; Fisher did give Koening's defense lots of credit, claiming he had never seen anything like what he did in the 1st Quarter.
Lack of info in the immediate aftermath, IMHO. FSU seems to be a classy bunch, I'm sure there wasn't a real slap intended.

I agree Clemson probably got too conservative and as a result let all the momentum get away from them much of a 2nd half.
That game SHOULD have been WF all over again.
But, no matter what the reason, FSU had a few good chances to win but they simply weren't good enough to get the job done.
Good win for Clemson.

App State: 45
Furman: 38Sadly, I won't get to go to this one. For "small college" football, it doesn't get better than this game. If you find yourself in Greenville, SC on Sat. Oct. 27 at 3:30, stop by Furman for one fun football game.

Air Raid,, you are really not very smart are you. the fact that a league, any league, has parity, does not mean it is not good. the Best thing that could happen to the SEC is that someone other than LSU or Florida win the conference this year.
You can only count one team out of the coference race in the ACC. In the SEC, Ole Miss, Auburn, Miss. State and Vandy have no chance this year. And we are just in week three.RazzMaTazz said:

RazzMaTaz,
I own the DVD of the game and watched it.. You are distorting history. You have a future in the political arena. The quote was about beating his Father AT FSU. Why would you simply lie about that? Very intersting.......
So let's see,,, if you agree with Air Raid then what you are saying is that the NFL is not a good league because of the parity of the teams. Again. another great assessement on your part.
The comment about the pay raise was in reference to a question about Spurrier's new contract. He simply said 8 wins would not get him one. I loved Spurrier's answer... But that was just plain fun.. but I am sure you did not comprhend that.
Now Spurrier's comments after the Georgia game left something to be desired. He bascially said Georgia was not a good SEC team and the win was not big deal. That created a stir, so much so the Atlanta Constituition called him out on it.
but you simply lying about the 2006 FSU game is disturbing.

I'm not defending Air Raid's opinion. I'm pointing out that your insulting comments like, "Air Raid,, you are really not very smart are you." are classless, just like many of Bowden's comments.
Tommy Bowden's exact quote about Spurrier's pay raise: "It's amazing how this thing works because I'm at a place where seven [wins] gets you fired. He's at a place where seven gets you a raise."
Spurrier's retort really put Tommy in his place, which I thought was great. But many of us thought that Bowden's comment was classless, petty, and jealous. However, after reading your other posts, I can see how you would think Bowden's comment was "just plain fun".Clemson Joe said:

Yesterday I read that Tommy Bowden said he called Lloyd Carr to explain because Tommy didn't mean his comments to be insulting to Carr or Michigan. I believe that. Tommy seems to make a lot of poorly worded statements that I'll bet he wishes he could take back. That's why I said in my original post #5 that he should be banned from talking to the press.
Cock'on'fire: They make things called PVRs and DVD recorders now, but you have to be able to read the instruction manual, so Carolina fans probably don't have them. :-)
I hope Clemson's AD takes notice of what Spurrier has accomplished at SC, and what a difference a top tier head coach can make. I wish we had hired him, because I think Clemson's historical dominance over SC is about to be reversed.

What say we table discussion until the big interstate rivalry game has been played? Clemson has a large edge in the series, how do you like their odds this year? Personally, I think they should sit this one out. But that's what I always think, I call it the superfan mindset. Right this very minute, I believe we gonna beat LSU and advance to #11 in the polls. That is about all we will get when we win that game.

USC deserves much higher than #11 if they beat LSU on Saturday. Personally, I don't think they have much of a chance, but we'll see. As for the big intrastate rivalry game, I think both teams have a big upside, but both have been known to collapse so it's far too early to assess that match up with any real certainty. They could both go into the game with great records, and that would be a lot of fun. I just wish they'd ditch having the game on Thanksgiving weekend.
