Hawkins to let 'freak' kicker attempt 70 yard FG this year

If new Colorado Head Coach Dan Hawkins has his way, the long standing football wall of a 70 yard field goal done in competition will be broken this season, and he thinks he has just the kicker to do it.

Labeling senior Kicker Mason Crosby a 'freak', but in the nicest way, Hawkins came right out and said that he will let Crosby have his chance to put his name in the NCAA record books

"Obviously, the team comes first and we want to win the game," Hawkins said. "But you also want a kid to have a chance to put his name in a record book. And I want to give him that opportunity. I think he'll have a chance to break the record in Folsom (Field)."

The current record NCAA of 67 yards is held by four men, the most recent by Tom Odle of Division II Fort Hayes State. But all four completed the feat using a 2" tee, a practice not allowed today. In 1976 Ove Johansson of NAIA Abilene Christian set the all time collegiate record with a 69 yard field goal.

To have a Big 12 football coach say he will let his kicker boot a ball 70 yards is like he's saying "I got no offense".

A team is rewarded with a field goal if the offense moves the ball deep into scoring territory. To have a team get the kickoff deep in the end zone, start on their own 20, drive bogs down on their own 38 and have their field goal kicker boots a 70 yarder...that's sickening.

Fans do not pay to see a kicking clinic. They wanted to see some offense running and passing. They wanted to see the defense shut down the other team.

I would like to see Colorado come up to play Nebraska on our own field and try that 70 yarder. Chances are, we will block the kick and return it for a TD!!

Judging by what they have this year, I think this kid will have lots of opportunitys to kick...probably from 70 yards or better. It don't look good for the buffs at all.

I would like to see him do it though...at least he is in the Big 12.

    Go Huskers!!

Just to clarify - a 70 yard field goal would be from approximately at team's own 47 yard-line. You get 10 yards of endzone, about 7 yards from the line of scrimmage to the holder, and 53 yards of additional playing field.

I imagine when they cite the 70 yard figure that is what they are referring to. Neverthless there is something a little bit unsettling about the idea of scoring offensive points without even getting the ball into your opponent's territory.

The Buffs might be better than most think this year.

As most of us know about kids on this level...you do have to get the right kind of players for your system but beyon that a lot of their performance is MOTIVATION and MORAL based...say what you want about Dan Hawkins - reguardless he IS a motivator and he has changed the attitude in Boulder.

He also has been VERY successful on the D-1 level. The Buffs talent has dropped off a little over the years but is not horrible by any means.

He is too smart to come out and try to run over teams in the Big XII, Barnett couldn't figure that out. Hawkins will air it out to stretch defenses...pass to run vs. run to pass, use misdirection and multiple looks to get defenses on their heels. I was always impressed with the offensive playcalling and execution of Boise St. when Hawkins was there.

My thought is that if Hawkins can get their Defense up to par I think many will be surprised at the team Colorado fields.

Not sure why some of you seem a bit fired up about this. Teams score without having a sustained drive into the opponent's territory all the time - blocked kicks, kick returns, 80 yard runs from the los, etc.

As anyone who has followed the Hokies for the last 10+ years can attest to, special teams is the oft neglected yet critical third unit on the team. An exceptional special teams unit can not only be the key in a game between two otherwise evenly matched opponents, it can also allow an otherwise inferior team to beat a superior team (can you say momentum?).

A 70 yard field goal will always be a risky proposition, with a high potential for blocks, giving your opponent the ball on your 40 if you miss, etc. If Crosby does manage a 70 yarder, I hope it comes in a meaningful situation with the game on the line, as opposed to what would amount to little more than a publicity stunt in a blowout.

Also a lot of thier success might come down to the production they get out of the QB's.

Either way, from what I have read Hawkins is the right man for the job.

    Hey

I believe they measure the kick from the line of scrimmage to the goal posts. I dont believe they take into account the 7-10 yards the kicker is behind the line. So in all actuality the kicker can probably kick a total of 80 yards or so from the kciker to the goal posts. Thats ridiculous anyway you measure it. But if the horns special teams is on their game this year they will blck that crap all day long just because of the low trajectory the ball would have to launch at to make it that distance.

    LONGHORN

They measure from the holder. So 7 yards from scrimmage, and 10 yards for enzone. So the line of scrimmage would be your own 47 yard line. The holder would be at their own 40. I thought you guys from Texas knew football?

Whats' the big deal about the kicker? Even if he hits a 70 yarder probably 1 in 3 attempts if lucky, its only 3 points. Bring it on buffs. I think the only think I want to see more than this over-hyped kicker get creamed this season, is for KSU to start Josh Freeman and see Steve Octavien and Adam Carriker give his text-messaging A$$ a warm Husker welcome. Watch out for the Blackshirts Bioootches.

Welp, shows how much the general public knows about football. "Diggs the Mountie" is correct; the distance of the kick is measured from where the kicker's foot meets the ball, namely, the placeholder.

Colorado is a volatile team; 7-6 last year, they could end up 5-7 as easily as 9-3 this year.
Dan Hawkins is an innovative coach and is eventually gonna have Colorado back in XII contention (maybe this year, maybe in three yrs; CU's recruiting really dropped-off last couple of yrs). About giving his kicker a shot at a FG distance record, its not a big deal either way. Maybe its sortava team-building kind of thing, a rally-ing point. I'll be rooting for Hawkins.

Be carefull what you wish for tek45...YOUR HUSKERS HAVEN'T WON IN MANHATTAN SINCE 1996!

Freeman will end up being better than ANY QB you have on your roster right now. You and all the other Huskers thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread until you found out he was leaving.

Sorry he hurt your feelings tek45.

A little history to calm you and Octavien down.

2002 KSU 49 NU 13 Roberson had almost 190+ rushing yards IN THE FIRST QUARTER!

2003 KSU 38 NU 9 Defensive clinic in Lincoln.

2004 KSU 45 NU 21 Beet down in Manhattan.

2005 KSU 25 NU 27 If Moriera didn't muff the punt at the end of the game we win four years in a row.

Your Huskers haven't won the North since 1999, since then the North has been DOMINATED by Colorado and Kansas State.

    Sorry you're so bitter tek45.

again ksuwild, the PAST is the PAST. I could go on all day about the huskers vs. KSU in past years and show you which school has more tradition more national championships, more wins, better athletes, better coaches. but I dont dwell on the past. So forget about Roberson he is gone. All you have now is a half promising freshman and a hopefull 7 win season at best. Hey I know, get out all of your tapes of the past five years and relish in your wins over nebraska, rewind them and play them again. Those days are over. It actually ended last year when we beat you guys. Face it, Kansas is a basketball state and thats all it ever will be and thats only because of KU. All you Kansas football fans need to get a hobby during football season and wait till basketball season to have something to be a fan of.

Yes tek45, the past is the past. The recent past has a DIRECT REALEVANCE to the present whether you choose to acknowlege that or not.

When you start talking about Octavien and your blackshirts dominating(like there is anything that has happened recently to warrant that)then I'm going to remind you of how things HAVE REALLY GONE...not the tek45 corn field dream land version...the version were you can't win a North Title yet still seem to think your team has National Championship on it's way this year. "upset" wins. I guess the big 12 just isn't jazzy enough for you rilalin junkies on the coasts, but when it comes down to it... we are up there with the best every year, we just dont have as many highlight reels on sports center... i feel your pain, go rob another pharmacy... quick before the football team does!

Dear Dave, I apologize for not getting to you sooner, I have been on vacation.

It's funny you brought up how many championships KSU has won because you huskers HAVEN'T EVEN WON THE NORTH SINCE 1999 let alone the Big XII Conference.

Do you know who won the North the year before 99, and the year after 99, and then again in 2002 and 2003 along with the Big XII Championship?

You guessed it Dave. Kansas State

It's funny how you think NU is soo special when they have struggled to do ANYTHING SINCE THE TURN OF THE CENTURY.

Like I told tek45, Josh Freeman has more talent and potential than ANY QB on your roster whether you choose to admit it to yourself or not.

I will give it to you that NU looks good this year, maybe good enought to win the north again(finally!), but make no mistake about it Dave...they haven't won any championships yet this season.

Your corn boys also haven't won in Manhattan since 1996, so you might want to grab some butter and salt and pepper to have on hand on Oct. 14 so you can eat a big plate full of your corn words when K-State takes it to your big headed huskers.

As far as CU, noone in there right mind could have predicted a loss to Montana St., that is pretty bad.

I still believe they will be better in the long run with Hawkins though.

When you're doing your brilliant prognosticating, do you ever view their (CU's) schedule? I'm personally wagering anything on a 2-10 season. A possible win over Baylor and one of the two Kansas schools (not both). Should be utter humiliation by Georgia, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Scary to even think of the scores those teams could muster. Hawkins should feel embarrassed, and offer an apology to Buffs fans for fielding such a pathetic team. But, he seems to care less. He belongs anyplace but in Boulder.
