TCU needs pass defense

Northwestern missed enough field goals last night to let the Horned Frogs pull off their first victory of the season, a 48-45 win in double OT. The Wildcats shanked, pulled, and flat out missed five FGs on the night, otherwise they would have beaten TCU.

The amazing part of this game is the way that Texas Christian again showed that they can handle the run to some degree, but they don't have anybody that can defend the pass. Tackling in the secondary? Someone needs to tell the Frogs that it is legal to actually tackle a receiver after the catch. Wildcat QB Brett Basanez, who's no better than average, torched the Frogs for 39-62 passing for 513 yards, 4 TDs and one pick. There was no pass rush, unless you count the sack on Basanez when his own lineman stepped on his foot & he went down.

TCU looked like a JV squad as Northwestern just lit them up.

Some of the D/FW folks are saying that the Frogs can "recover" against Southern Methodist this coming week. I disagree. SMU is no comparison to Texas Tech, for example, who just happen to be the Frogs next opponent. If Patterson can't find some help in pass coverage, the Red Raiders may go over 800 yards.

TCU has enough offense to counter-punch most opponents, but they can't win the C-USA title if every game is a shoot-out. The Louisvilles, Memphiss, and Tulanes of the world just have too much firepower.

I agree with your assesment of TCU's pass defense. However, once the running game gets going, we will be able to keep the ball longer and keep opposing QBs on thier bench.

That's what everyone said last year, too, and that really didn't work out to well when Southern Miss showed up on the schedule. They've got some talent, but I really think it's a scheme problem. There's no pressure up front & even the most talented DBs can keep up forever. TCU needs more help on the pass rush.
