Think Mike Tranghese has a rooting interest tonight?
I doubt Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese will venture into the now ACC-infested confines of the Orange Bowl for tonight's Louisville-Miami tilt. However, somewhere he will be watching (and rooting), likely with a Cardinal red pom-pom in hand.
No one underestimates the crushing blow Miami dealt the Big East by bolting (along with Virginia Tech and Boston College) to the ACC. By the same token, no one could miss the bitterness and animosity held by Tranghese toward UM administrators for the making the move.
Only the addition of a Notre Dame- or Oklahoma-caliber team could make up for the loss of the 'Canes. Tonight, however, a Louisville upset would catapult the Cards into the BCS discussion and vastly improve the football stature and outlook of the Big East in 2005. At least emotionally, a U of L win would provide a morale boost for the Big East and permit a momentary laugh at the expense of the Hurricanes.
"There's an opportunity for a lot of people in our league to be the name team. Our coaches all think they can get there. Louisville thinks they can do it. West Virginia thinks they can do it. Pitt thinks they can do it. We have a lot of teams that can do it. It's very different from the way it used to be with Miami, where everyone lined up behind them for second. It's not going to be that way anymore. Who is that [name] team going to be five years from now? I don't know, but it's going to be interesting to find out."
Commish, just don't lose your voice by yelling too loud tonight.

If Utah beats West Virginia (Or Boston College) in the Fiesta Bowl and Boise State knocks off Louisville in the Liberty Bowl that it might be interesting what happens to that automatic bid.
I personally expect it will be gone by 2006 and replaced with 2-3 spots guaranteed for non-BCS conferences with the added Bowl.

looking for the upset too, but it is Miami and non BCS team in U of L. Sorry the truth hurts. If Mike could have realize that football makes way more money than Basketball, Maybe he would have listened to Miami and went to a 12 team conference in Football. And we would not have this topic on the board today.
The Big East SUCKS and it will suck for years to come.
