Army Has 2 Wins!!!
Bobby Ross has always been recognized as a good football coach. Ross, who has built championship programs at both the collegiate and professional levels, was named the 34th head coach at Army under tough circumstances. A head coach in the college ranks for 15 years prior to serving successful stints directing the San Diego Chargers and the Detroit Lions in the NFL, Ross led Georgia Tech to a national title and the Chargers to a Super Bowl, but he was not Army's first choice. After Frank Solich's well-documented rejection of Army's offer of the head coaching job, the USMA came after Ross. Ross had been retired from the coaching ranks, but the Virginia Military Institute grad perked up when he heard about Army's opening.
Now, after a rough start to the season, including a few drubbings from UConn and Louisville, the Black Knights of the Hudson have found themselves. An explosive offense fueled by the running of the junior Carlton Jones who has tallied 757 yards this season on only 105 carries for an average of a whopping 7+ yards a carry.
The 2 cumulative wins are much better than the Knights fared in any season since 2001, and the team appears capable of winning their first game against hated rival Navy since that same year, with this, the first winnning streak the program has had in 7 years. Even the though the defense seems incapable of stopping a running faucet, much less a run and shoot offense, the Knights stay in games thanks to their surprising firepower and expected grit. Ross' task is a hard one but you have to salute the man's willingness to take on a tough case. If the Black Knights are able to beat the Middies this year, and with Army returning to independent status in 2005, things may start to look even better around West Point.
