Arrests Made in UConn Stabbing Death

A total of three men have been arrested in the stabbing death of Connecticut's Jasper Howard two weeks ago, including one charged with murder. The 20 year old starting cornerback was stabbed to death during a fight at a dance held on campus after the 10/17/09 homecoming game against Louisville. John William Lomax III, 21, of Bloomfield, CT has been charged with murder. Lomax's attorney claims that his client, who is not s student, was at the dance and was simply trying to break up a fight that had occured.

Police also charged Hakim Muhammad, 20, of Bloomfield, with conspiracy to commit assault and Jamal Todd, 21, of Hartford, with a felony charge of falsely reporting an incident and a misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment. Todd is accused of pulling the fire alarm that emptied out the dance hall in the early hours of Sunday morning, causing the ensuing fight to occur.

Lomax, who's bond was set at $2 million, was initially told he would be charged in the fight, but not for the murder. Said his attorney, "I'm surprised. I'm curious to find out what evidence they had to secure an arrest warrant for murder. ... From all the evidence I've heard, he was not involved in the stabbing."

The entire UConn team travelled to Miami, FL, for Howard's funeral yesterday, but the healing has not yet begun for most team members. Said LB Greg Lloyd, "I wish only that it didn't happen at all so at least I can have my teammate back. It's unreal grief for the family, unreal grief for his friends -- it's just a shame."
