CW: 'Gang of Whatever' Edition

Week 2
Date:
9/8/2004
The year kicks off with a bang as the Sooners, Auburn, and the egos of several bloggers get taken down a peg. It's time for the first installation of CW of the 2005-2006 season.

CONVENTIONALwisdom
"GANG OF WHATEVER" EDITION
Wisconsin D. ??? Sure, sure... the Badgers got the win, but they allowed over 450 yards passing.
Tulane up You've gotta admire their spirit.
"The Scheme" down Despite being crowed about all off season by certain bloggers, Boise State's "scheme" proved no match for Georgia's.
Auburn down The controversy over Auburn's deservingness of the #1 spot from last year does not seem to be making a comeback.
Cal ??? Good win, horrible loss. See: Western Carolina vs. Alabama, circa 2004.
Notre Dame's Coach Weis up He's off to a great start but can they do it again against Michigan?
Florida ??? More questions than answers. The mind boggles.
Instant Replay up Not half the controversy one would expect at this point... but give it time.

for the record, nothing on my blog is reviewed or approved by Newsweek or MSNBC either.

    You guys got the hookup?

and of course by "got the hookup" I mean: "are you guys being published on MSNBC"?

No, but "Conventional Wisdom" is a take-off of something that used to (maybe still does?) run in Newsweek, which is a holding of MSNBC... so the disclaimer is necessary to avoid confusion with that.

...apparently it's a damned if we do, damned if we don't sort of thing in regards to the confusion.

Actually, Newsweek magazine is not a holding of MSNBC. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Washington Post Company (which also owns the newspaper of the same name).

Newsweek DOES have an agreement where MSNBC hosts their website and shares content, but is not in any way owned by MSNBC.

What does Auburn's controversy of last years' title game have anything to do with this years' team???? Who in their right mind is even still thinking about that. This Auburn team is a TOTALLY different team when you take into consideration that they have a new young quarterback and a whole new backfield! So I ask again, what does this years' Auburn team have to do with what happened last year? The answer is NOTHING!

Now I am beginning to understand things. Fifth-year senior majoring in computer science. Mgoblog.blogspot.com is an engineering major a year or two out of school. You guys are a bunch of nerds! That explains your stupidity about college football! Thanks!

But I will say this. Apparently, everyone is obsessed with what I have to say. Apparently, no one else has anything to say, so what I say has become the focus of everyone. So the more you keep talking about me, the less pegs my 'ego' will be taken down. Thanks again!

    Heisman,
What was the highest competitive level of football you ever played?

Ah yes, HP... there's that "class" we're coming to know and love.

The "about" section probably needs to be updated -- I'm a first year law school student.

And by the way... if you're so "smart" about college football how'd you screw up so horribly on BSU/Georgia? Doesn't really make any sense that "stupid" folks would get it right and the "more enlightened" would get it so, so wrong.

Or maybe this is like how the "smart" people used to say the earth was flat and it was only the "stupid" or "crazy" who believed it to be round.

Don't even get me started on HP. I've written him off.

And yes, we were featured twice on MSNBC last year and once this year. I don't feel the need to recite the full list.

Matt: no need to get your panties in a wad -- I was merely making the comment that nobody will mistake Auburn for national champs this year. That's all.

Robert: good point. I had forgotten about that. We did the research last year and found "ConventionalWisdom" being shown on the MSNBC site and so I felt the need to differentiate there as well.

    Matt:

You are right they do have nothing in common and for it they will do nothing this year. Just another overrated SEC Auburn team that will most likely go 6-6 if that. They SEC teams are learning not to play PAC-10 teams. Notice the trend here look at the record. It is pretty ridiculous...

Yeah. It's also classy to take potshots at someone, to claim they were 'knocked down a few pegs.' Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I screwed up over Boise/UGA because in college football, shit happens, like six turnovers by one player in a half. I never said I was perfect. Next time I will be more cautious in making the audacious statement that the No. 18 team might beat the No. 13 team. What lunacy!

FWIW, I am not basing my estimation of your football intelligence on my failure to correctly pick the UGA-Boise game. I am basing it on your inability to understand the points I bring up. Just stick to your law books, k?

Well, I'm going to go cry in the corner now because Donahue has written me off. How crushing! If a tree falls in the blogosphere and no one cares, did it ever exist?

What in the world does that even mean? And, for the record there is a reason Air Force isn't a perennial national contender, but is more of a pain in the butt: the scheme is important, but players make plays.
