CW: 'PINK LOCKER' EDITION

Week 5
Date:
9/29/2005
CW has recovered from last week's CW comment section meltdown and troll investation in time to track the latest trends in college football.

CONVENTIONALwisdom
"PINK LOCKER" EDITION
Tennessee up It's taken them weeks to start looking like a Top 10 team, but they were clicking by the end, and Clausen gets the start this week.
Master Coaches Poll ?? So far so good, and the voting breakdown is public... but CW is sure that plenty of know-it-all commenters have better ideas.
Louisville down Observe the impact of the all-important "scheme"... I guess they thought they had USC this week.
Michigan down Can UMich stop the bleeding? Things could get ugly in a hurry for Carr if the Spartans win this week.
UCF up ...as though they had anywhere else to go.
PC Police down On the bright side, if this is the most pressing social issue right now, we're in good shape.
This Week's Games up VA Tech at WVU? USC at ASU? UF at 'Bama? ND at Purdue? It's going to be a great weekend of college football.
Liberty Bowl ?? The good: SEC vs. Conference USA
The bad: No intra-state matchups.

There isn't anything great about Va Tech/WVU or USC/Ariz State. Both games will likely be blow-outs and won by 30 or more points. How does that constitute a good week of games?

Not only will we get to see if Va Tech is for real but it will be interesting to see if USC can score more than 70... is it just me or is White looking like a better running back than Bush?

Aaron, I would consider checking out the WVU/VT game. This is a VT fan saying that this game wont be a blowout. You can definitely expect some hard hitting smashmouth football

Until Saturday night, when I'll be fixed on ND at Purdue, I'll also be watching Indiana at Wisconsin.

    What? Are you going crazy?

Bear with me... Wisconsin is coming off a huge win against Michigan. Indiana (yes, lowly Indiana) has historically given Wisconsin fits. All of this adds up to a letdown- and upset-alert for this game.

I enjoy watching VT, Brad, so I just might. Not sure I agree with you, though. Rivalry or not, WV just doesn't have the talent this year and I don't see how this game will be anymore challenging than Georgia Tech was.

Jeff, it depends on how you define RB. Reggie Bush is a threat to score every single time that he touches the football. I can't say the same about White, although White does look pretty good this year. But better than Bush? That all depends on your preference of running style I think.

The pink locker room article is by far the dumbest thing I have ever heard of in collegiate sports.

I'm sorry that was random, but it had to be vented.

Arkansas had their players wearing pink jerseys this spring as punishment for not hustling. That is until a breast cancer awareness group and a gay rights group got offended and pushed them until they stopped doing it.

Political correctness goes WAY overboard these days.

    Aaron,
Go back to the Arkansas archives on Fanblogs and you'll see the full blow-by-blow of the pink jersey thing. It was Reggie Herring doing it on defense in preseason practice. They switched to burnt orange (a la Texas) as the color for slackers after the cancer group complained.

Michigan is going to win this weekend, Spartans don't have a chance! I just found a great DVD I wanted to share with everyone, Team Baby Entertainment makes DVDs for all the big football schools that teach babies and kids all about the school and the football tradition. It is great, my kids love Baby Wolverine, everyone should get some for the little ones at their house (you will enjoy it too)!

    JEFF:

White and Bush have two completely different role in the SC offense. Although both are listed as running backs, they are different in terms of usage during a game. White is strictly a North and South runner & power back, basically pound the ball type of back (old school football). Bush, is what they call an all-purpose back, he can't pound the ball, but is quick enough to get through the hole as an North and South runner. He is all purpose, because he can play receiver and since he's so good in terms of agility and quickness, he eludes defenses, so the defense has to contantly know where he's at on the field, so he can also play as a decoy, giving the SC receivers less defensive opponents to worry about. With White, the defense already knows what happens when he touches the ball, he is going to ram it down their throat. To make it simple, it's apples and oranges, as a pure back, White is better; as an all purpose player, aka back, receiver, kick/punt returner Bush is better with his blazing speed, and break your ankles type of agility, White, he'll just try to break your spine and run towards you, and prays to god that you'll live.

    I may be wrong though!!!!!?????
If anybody has a better explanation, please feel free to enlighten me.....!!!!!!

There no doubting that Bush is an exceptional football player and I am a huge fan. I saw him last year and he is incredibly fast, he can do some amazing things with on the field but the fact remains that he doesn't really have a position. In the end this could hurt his game when he goes pro. Whereas White, although not as flashy, is a solid running back who you can rely on for 30 carries a game. I think I would like to see Bush to play one position more consistently, but where would he go? SC has a good receiving core but to keep him only on punts/kickoffs would not be using him enough?

It is just you, Bush is far more versatile. All you had to do was watch him single-handedly bring back the Trojans in Autzen.

The SC line opens up huge wholes for White to run through and score short-yardage tds. Bush makes any play on his own. He could go run for the Detroit Lions or any other team with a bad line amd be like a Ladainian. There is a perfect example of a guy like Bush getting a bunch of touches week in and week out. He will be a superstar without a doubt at the next level.

Everyone on the SC offnse has a specific role that they play to contribute to the teams success. SC's success is dependent that all of the players meet their responsibilities. White is a punishing back that wears on a defense. He also has the ability to break tackles and run away from pursuit. What team in the country wouldn't benefit from what he brings to the table. I agree that Bush is a totally different type of player in the SC offensive scheme. He makes defenders miss and can make the most out of the worst situations. When the game is on the line, the Trojans call on Bush because he's the type of guy that can change a game on a single play. What team in the country wouldn't benefit from what he brings to the table? SC is fortunate enough to have 2 great backs with their own unique styles. Throw in Heisman winner, Matt Lienhart in with that combo and you see why the SC offense is the hardest in the country to defend.
