Grambling to update oval "G" logo
After learning that they never owned the copyright on the "G" logo featured for 30 plus years on their helmets, Grambling officials have announced that they will unveil a new logo for the school.
The Green Bay Packers own the rights to the oval "G" logo and have allowed both Grambling and Georgia to use variations of the mark. Grambling adopted the variation as a tribute to Grambling great Willie Davis:
It was chosen in part as a tribute to Willie Davis, who had graduated from Grambling and gone on to become the school's first Hall of Fame while playing for Green Bay, said Wilbert Ellis, who was then an assistant to R.W.E. Jones -- at that time, both school president and baseball coach.
Grambling hopes the new logo, which may feature the oval "G" along with a tiger, will enhance the school's identity and lead to increased revenues from apparal and licensing.
