ESPN College GameDay headed to VaTech-Miami

The Canes are gonna need a strong showing from Freeman and Moss if they stand a chance. Yes Miami's defense is good, but so is the Hokie offense. I expect a 28-24 victory for the CANES.

2003: VT was basically a star-studded soap opera on the verge of yet another late-season collapse.
         Result:  Hokies: 31, 'Canes: 7

2004: VT was a solid team with strong senior leadership that was overcoming a huge loss of talent on the way to the ACC crown.
         Result:  Hokies: 16, 'Canes: 10

2005: VT is lean and hungry, a well-oiled machine on offense, defense, and special teams, a team full of star potential where everyone still fits together perfectly. Oh, and there is this guy named Vick...
Prediction:  A long, frustrating night for the 'Canes.
                                Hokies: 43, 'Canes: 10

Miami lost its swagger once they left the Big East. The ACC is Virginia Tech's conference. Plus, it's a night time game in Blacksburg. The Mountain folk in West Virginia and Virginia go crazy after dark. BeamerBall will prevail.

well im glad to see either lose, because penn state is going to kill a wisconsin team who allowed 116 yds rushing against illinois' QB, also we shut down minnesotas maroney earlier who is way better then calhoun....all im saying is penn states going to jump in rankings thanks to a lose by miami or vtech

I hope the Canes' beat VT. Either way it will be another opportunity to watch the gameday crew do a little slurpin on Marcus Vick and his "spectacular play at quarterback".

Does anybody else think VT is due for an upset? Miami has steadily improved all season and VT is pretty cocky.

I don't see how you think VT is so cocky. Both of the last two games were gut checks in the second quarter. Yeah, they beat WVU (remember Portis? 34-17) MD, and BC convincingly, but each time the threat was there. I think the VT team is going into this prepared for the worst.

And Miami has improved all season? Perhaps that's because they started with FSU, Clemson, and Colorado, and have since played South Florida, Duke, and Temple. They're a good team, but I'm surprised I don't hear similar complaints about UM's character, rap sheets, schedule strength, etc as I do about VT.

I'm with BalRog. Enough with all the whining. Team comparisons makes me think VT by 3 TDs.

Cuz if you look at the history, it's kind of reversed. It used to be Miami was always dominant and then they got knocked off. (several times) Everybody knows VT is gonna win. Smells like an upset. Miami has the talent to match VT. Unfortuneately, they do not have near the coach.

Yeah, I see that. I guess I just can't imagine them thinking cocky rather than cautious (except for Jimmy Williams, who can't seem to realize the ego hurts the team). It seems like the last thing they're thinking about is the Rose Bowl. If it were me, I'd have the headlines after the Temple game in the mid 90s on my locker to keep me in check.

before Hoakie fans like Balrog ( nice LOTR ), start preaching Hoakie dynasty if they win this weekend, lets remember the Hoakie resume:

lost 1 national championship (to a Fl team no less)
lost to USC last year already
    lost Sugar Bowl last year
.....that is thier resume agianst respectable teams.

now, they do have a 7-3 record against Miami and maybe a better head coach too, but until V-Tech has even 1 ring to Miami's 5, then they can tuck thier regular season away as they will NEVER gain BCS credibility. Before you start claiming the ACC to be Hoakie territory, be aware that FSU are both breaking in new offenses and chunks of the D as well.

If Miami beats VT, I don't think it would be considered an upset. Both teams are top notch. It will be a great game but Wright won't be able to get it done as a 1st time starter in Lane.

Hey, as a Virginia Tech Graduate, I will say this. There are a few stats that need to be brought to the surface. Miami is 3-7 in the last 10 years to Virginia Tech. Miami has only won once in Lane Stadium in those 10 years (That was the Earnest Wilford dropped 2 point conversion that would have tied the score in 2001, UM's national title year), and the 3 other times College Gameday came to Blacksburg, the combined score of those 3 games were 62-10 over Syracuse in 1999, 43-10 over Miami also in 1999, and 51-7 over GT. Mix that with an offense who replaced Bryan Russell and a couple of lineman for Marcus Vick and a couple of linemen, and an improved defense, I say it will be a close game, but wouldn't be a Hokie if I didn't think VT would win.

RE #6 & #8: Sean, you are right that, based on the last decade, based on this year's rankings and hype, VT should be considered the favorite, and with a fair amount of swagger room. That should be enough to make any team at least a little bit cocky.

However, if you ask 100 fans of other conferences (other than Big East or ACC) "Who is the underdog in a VT-Miami match up?" 90 of them would say VT. Every Hokie player knows this, and it feeds his hunger. Listen to anything Hokie DT Darryl Tapp says during the run up to this game. This guy sets the tone for the whole team, and he does not think his team has accomplished anything yet.

Miami is, if anything, a little more talented than the VT man-to-man. But VT is a much better team. And VT is hungry, very, very hungry.

No, I stand by my prediction. It will be a replay of 1999.

Let 'em come on Saturday and get trounced by VT, gentlemen. In fact, I hope for a Classic game because VT needs the pump to move the BCS votes following this game to secure the road to National Championship; and to start all the questions how great is VT this year, as opposed to Texas and USC. Happily, Miami will lose the game on Saturday against VT in all categories by which teams are routinely measured, but, this time, a great game of it between the two will be more than a 9-0 for VT. Poor Miami.

    Re: BalRog,

Frodo says that you are correct in your assesment, VT is not as talented pound for pound but are a much more cohesive unit right now and error free. Miami is just the opposite, young on offense, and still very undisciplined with late hits, unsportsmalike penalties, ect...

You are dead WRONG about who is percieved the underdog. I could post a hundred or so news links in which VT is favored in most of them. heck, even the official line is VT -6.5 , so they are basically a full TD favorites. Even south florida news outlets aren't giving Miami much more than spoilers chance.

I will be at the game this weekend, travelling from hurricane wrecked Ft Lauderdale to see the underdogs play. Orange Bowl fans are often nasty, violent and drunk. I hope VT fans aren't the same.

random fan, c'mon, you gotta see that everyone favors VT except Woody on Cold Pizza. I think this will be a close game. I think Miami can win, but we are not coached as well as VT. Overall, Miami holds the advantage over VT, but in the past ten years, it's been all them.
Wright is tough, and is getting better, except for the first half meltdown against UNC. Has VT played anybody with a strong defense yet? I haven't followed them all that close.

RE: #18, I agree that coaches, players and media eggspirts are all giving the Hokies their props. But look at my comment again. I was talking about the "fan on the street."

I live in Minnesota, and I still get comments like "those bums could never play in the BIG TEN" from fans who actually watch a wide variety of college football every week, even fans who have a lot of respect for "southern" (SEC/ACC) football. If I quiz them on who leads the VT-Miami series over the last decade, I get "Miami" without hesitation. I can't believe this perception is unique to Minnesota or to Big Ten turf.

In any case, C&U, God bless you and yours down in South Florida. And I hope you enjoy the game... but not too much.

Sean, I'm totally with you that everybody is favoring VT. I'm just saying that they're likely not as cocky as people think. VT has always been the underdog in big games. They got the nickname Chokies because of the common nature of the team to play top contenders and upset them, then turn around and lose to a weak team the following weekend.

I disagree that Miami is better pund for pound, but this weekend should shine some light on that. VT has played well against great defenses -NC State, BC, and Maryland were the top. The only team with better defensive stats on the ground than VT is Miami, and it's not by much.

Yeah, I'm a VT fan. I LOVE the games against Miami, and think it's one of the best rivalries we have. Still, I think that Vick has yet to provide the high drama that will get them into the BCS 1-2. If he had done so last week, or maybe the week before, I'd be saying upset right along with you. At this point though, I think they're entering the game humble and hungry.

Sean, Virginia Tech has played tough defenses as Random Fan stated. Reminding you that Boston College was 4th in the nation against the run and VT racked up yards and out manned the front line who was much bigger and stronger than VT. The hokies heart and determination is what makes them a great team as well as their god given abilities, but to say Miami can pull this win off in Blacksburg then I would say that isn't going to happen due to the heart and drive this team seems to have. I use to get nervous about who we would play but this year I have had no doubt that we wouldn't go undefeated and given the chance could show why USC gives VT respect. Because they know we are the only team that can beat them on any day!!

I'd like to keep my name anonymous but I am part of the Miami Hurricanes coaching staff.

Based on inside information, VT will come up with an offensive attack known as the the Cucumber. In this scheme, they attempt to slice the opponent like a cucumber rendering it to pieces. We shall stop the cucumber approach with our own scheme typically know as the flying squirrel. In this case, we approach the foe like fierce fighting squirrels (biting and scratching).

We use this scheme as the VT players typically remind us acorns. We shall collect them and put these fellows in their place.

VTs coaching staff is weak, and the Tech players are extremely fearful of the upcoming game. This should prove to our advantage. Pass the word.

This Saturday night is going to another long night for the Canes at Lane. Tech is charged up when they play in Blacksburg because we have the loudest crowd in America. The Canes had to avoid disaster against UNC who upset them last year. And if you thimk Tech is too cocky you haven't seen the same interviews I've seen. Beamerball prevails and another dominating game by the Hokies 42-14. O and squirrels? I've never heard of a squirrel really harming anyone.

Brad, what's it going to say about Miami when the "overrated" Hokies kick their butt Saturday night? Let me guess, your going to tell us "It would have been different had they played in Miami." Just like last year, right?

One thing that seems to be getting overlooked is the team attitude of this year's Hokies. While they are very talented, their lack of the “it’s all about me” star attitude, similar to last year’s team, makes these guys the type of team that, even if they make a mistake, they will pick each other up. In my non-expert opinion, football, by far, is the truest “team sport” there is. While a single superstar can carry a team in any other sport I can think of, it takes a complete team effort in football to win game in and game out.

I would just like to see how many of you return to this board IF the Jokies are upset. hmm?????

If the Hoakies do win as expected, i hope FSU and Ernie Simms then put a whippin on them, as i really dont want to hear Beamer, whom i currently hhave tons of respect for, become a Tuberville whinner when they don't go to Pasadena.

I believe that it will be a great game, but VT will lose in a close one due to them not having a QB. I don't know how any sports fan or announcer can say that Vick is a decent QB, I've see better in a peewee league. He is just riding on the heels of his brother's success(??) and would be considered one of the worst QB in the league if he had a different last name.

Well, I surely could not have been more wrong about that one. I would have to say that last night was one of the worst offensive chokes in college football history. Vick is deservedly taking much of the heat, but he was not standing alone out there. There is plenty of blame to go around.

But even if the Hokies' offense had been on their "A" game I doubt we would have won. We might have made it more respectable, but we still would have posted an L. My hats are off to the 'Canes; the better team won.

I only hope we can finish off the season now. UVA and UNC both have pretty good defenses and nobody is going to be afraid of Vick anymore.

Yep, if Miami could do that to us, and we did that to you... Wow! You guys must really suck!

The truth? The Hokies' offense choked big time, but that doesn't change anything. Even without the meltdown we still would have lost. We could have made it more respectable, but still an "L". Props to the 'Canes; I'll be cheering for you in the title game.

VTBobb, the name "Caned and Unable" is not a self appraisal, it is a the state in which the other team is left in after playing a hungry and focused Hurricane team, like yesturday.

Canette, actually i flew back, but i didn't need a plane to feel sky high after Saturdays game. there was nothing quite like handing it to them at home AND the pleasure of seeing the beating replayed on the JumboTron ( something i wish the Orange Bowl would install ) . The crowd was quieter than a library all night there, but i want to mention how much class the fans had. many even wished me luck before and a few conggratualed me after the game. We certainly don't give them that kinda reception at the orange bowl.

they had to resort to cheap shots like Tapp did on Wright, but it didn't matter. i saved the sports newspaper headlines from Roanoke and i wish i could post them here.

Thank you NC state and NC. you both ensure FSU cannot even consider Pasadena and will be in the ACC game for a hopeful rematch!

Tech obviously wasn't on our A-game. I think Beamer let them get distracted (ESPN & ESPN Radio there all day, Beamer on Cold Pizza on Friday and Coach letting cameras in on their practice!!). However, the performance Miami put on was dominanat. Even with their A-game (which Miami never let them get into), Miami would have won. They played too good Saturday to loose to anybody in the country.

Odd though, if you Cane fans think we were overatted, doesn't that devalue the win? I still believe Tech's offense is very good and their defense is excellent (most Miami points came off of Tech turnovers and short drives). I hope Miami makes it to the Rose Bowl. If they play like they did in B'Burg, they can beat anyone.

    Good Luck Canes.

VTBobb, your attitude exemplifies the crowd at Blackburg and that is one of good sportsmanship.

I don't think VTech was overrated, i just think Marcus Vick was. Bryan Randall was better, i still remember the game three years ago when VTech came down here for Miami's last game and a sendoff to the Fiesta Bowl. I was there to see Bryan Randall take hit after hit from John Vilma and still run up and down the field all day, turning what could have been a blowout for Miami into a respectable game. ( albiet there was a certain back named Kevin Jones around )

advice to Tech: find yourself another Bryan Randall
