Conventional Wisdom: Week One

Week 1
Date:
9/1/2004
The best sport on earth, College Football, is about to get rolling, and NOBODY is more excited than I am... except maybe the people who make a living by it.

CONVENTIONALwisdom
PRE-SEASON EDITION
The BCS Formula down Making the championship more dependent on sportwriters is like making an angel food cake recipe more dependent on jalapeno peppers.
The ACC up When was the last time anyone was this excited about the start of conference games in the ACC? Short answer: never.
Colorado down Colorado Grand Jury indictments prove that prostitutes and football don't mix -- especially if you get caught.
Coach Franchoine ??? He's made a habit of winning more games in year two than year one... but when was the last time Texas A&M had 77 points dropped on them?
The NCAA down Myles Brand talked about being athlete-friendly... but apparently only if they're destitute, jobless, and reliant on sports to survive. Just ask Jeremy Bloom.
USC ??? Sure, they won on the road... but it was Virginia Tech, and they didn't pull away until the last 10 minutes of the game. CW thinks the jury is still out on this bunch.
Coach Friedgen ??? Maryland gave Friedgen an eight year deal worth $1.5 a year -- Fanblogs sources inform us that "unlimited donuts at coaches meetings" was a huge selling point.

What? No huge down arrow for Paterno coming back AGAIN to embarrass himself and the once great Lions?

I half expect to see, 5 or 10 years from now, a couple of PSU assistants holding up Paterno's still employed corpse between them on the sidelines. We can call it "Weekend at JoPa's".

In all seriousness, the fans and athletes at PSU deserve better than this. The administration should grow some nads and do what needs to be done.

I think the rule of thumb is, if you have a building named after you on campus, you get to choose when you leave.

However right or wrong that theory is.

Paterno may have passed his usefulness as a winning coach, but he still embodies the work ethic, discipline and integrity that today's game seems at times to be lacking ( see Colorado ). Paterno will coach until he decides not to. And thats the way it should be with a coach who IS a college football tradition.

( typing with a defunct index finger stinks )

JoePa made a lifetime out of playing Our Sisters of the Slovenly Poor, and then-very Notre Dame-esquely-getting his team up for 2-3 games each year...

What the heck has Joe Pa done since joining the Big 10? They're plugs, and his entire coaching career was spent building a resume on incredibly cupcake types, and a few big games sprinkled in...

Joe Paterno has been a good football coach. The media, and the ultimate emodiement of the term cupcake schedule are responsible for his ascension to other-wordly status...

    Give me a break.

And don't forget that his QB flaked on him, and a few other players decided not follow Paterno. And if my memory serves me correct, wasn't Penn St. commpeting for the national championship a couple years ago? Paterno is better than most coaches out there, that is why he has been there for over 30 years.

Well, he did coach a decent game in their Blockbuster Bowl loss a decade or so ago.
