Conventional Wisdom: Week Two

Week 2
Date:
9/9/2004
It was, by and large, a boring week in college football, which may explain the sour mood of CW this week.

CONVENTIONALwisdom
HURRICANE EDITION
The SEC down Ole Miss and Kentucky get shown up by Memphis and Louisville. LSU didn't impress, either.
Hurricanes down ...and we're not talking Miami. Hurricanes postponed the most exciting game of the week and made the week, for the most part, of no consequence. Sure, everyone hated hurricanes already... but here's one more reason.
Instant Replay ??? They're still working out the kinks, but things went as well as could be expected for week 1.
The BCS down If this past week didn't excite, you can look forward to more of the same now that the BCS has dropped Strength of Schedule from it's formula.
Coverage up Between satellite radio coverage and the announcement of ESPN's new channel ESPNU, things are looking up for the college football fan.
LSU, Clemson down Yeah, you got the W, but CW says your stock is dropping unless you can rebound with strong wins in Week 2.
Coach Zook ??? The hurricane postponed the game AND the suspensions, which has fans crying foul, but it's really a non-issue. E. Michigan is no more fierce an opponent than MTSU.

I don't think a big win this week helps LSU's stock much. When playing a high school, you're expected to win big. So while winning by less than 30 might hurt LSU's stock, I don't think winning by 70 would help it much at all.

We won't get a real feel for how good (or bad) LSU is this year until next week at Auburn.

That was basically my point... if they don't have strong wins this week, it's going to hurt.

How Oregon State does this week might effect LSU more than how LSU does. The road trip to Boise State should be an interesting match for them. If Oregon State wins big, LSU will look good. If BSU upsets them, which they very well might, LSU will lose quite a bit of stock, even with a 104 point win.

Boise State 28, Oregon State 18 with three missed XPA.

I agree with you on the SEC Pete, a bad showing all around.

Who did impress me this week, was the middle of the pack(not Michigan or OSU) Big 10 schools.

Purdue, where did that defense come from? I heard Walter Reyes mentioned in Heisman discussions early on, he was nonexistant.
Iowa, they put up Playstation type numbers on D against Kent State.
Penn State, offense galore, all kinds of tricks in the bag.

Something to watch over the season.
