Fanbogs - College Football Weblogs

Hug a football blogger

This year's edition of the College Football Blogger awards is getting underway and nominations are now open.

If you read a lot of college football blogs, now is the time to hug your favorite football blog.

And if you AREN'T reading a lot of college football blogs (what the hell is wrong with you, man?!) then last year's winners list is an oustanding place to start. Be sure to bookmark early and often.

Note: I am going to ask again this year that -- even if you're drunk enough to consider doing so -- that you not nominate Fanblogs. Not only do we not deserve it in any of the writing categories, the corporate folks who own this site frown on awards in general; however, there is an award for community and -- in my opinion -- y'all definitely deserve it.

Fanblogs puts together great traffic numbers, but we have had more than 1200 folks register to the site this year as commenters. We've had thread with over 300 comments this year. That's awesome. I know I enjoy the comments more than the posts. Y'all truly make the site fun.

I recently entered a 12-step program for wanton college football blog visitation. You know, the first step is admitting you have a problem... :-)

Fanblogs is special because of the format. It thrives on the comments generated by the posters, who interact with each other probably more so than other blogs. All sites list comments, but's there's rarely any interacting among posters. On fanblogs, both rivalries and camaraderie sprout among regular posters, which further enhances the banter.

Many blogs are opinion pieces to begin with, done by an individual or a cadre of bloggers, and posters express their opinions as well. Threads on here are typically fact-based (I said TYPICALLY)and the readers provide the opinion part. I do like it when Kevin weighs in with his opinion from time to time, because it's not always so evident in the root-thread. Besides, he needs to be on here to sometimes direct the traffic. Like a driver who's had 12 vodka tonics, we occasionally swerve all over the fanblogs road, crashing through the guard gate and spilling down the side of a rocky cliff, resulting in a crash that almost certainly blows up into SEC talk...

Generally, a healthy respect is exhibited among the regulars for each other, in spite of posters representing a wide array of schools. You have the occasional crazies and juveniles who appear, and it's good to see them get shouted down even by their fellow fans if they cross the line.

Like any community, it takes time to develop, and it's good to see the regulars on here trying to do that. Perhaps as he alluded to recently, he may allow auditions for regular posters to submit a piece here or there. That would be even better than the elusive hat tip, which I've failed to secure EVER....

I've been on here for two full seasons, about a year and a half. I can't remember how I found this site, but I've enjoyed it immensely. I actually like it better than my regular homer site. Strange, huh?

Fanblogs is the most fun you can have on the internet without having to use your credit card!

Seriously though, this site is really something special. To me, it is as much a part of college football as tailgating, gameday and Saturday afternoons. Great job Kev and the rest of the guys!

FANBLOGS.......It's a great place to visit, but living here is even better!!

I would put fanblogs.com up there with my homer site. I have actually been coming and reading this blog for a couple of years now even though i didn't comment as much.

It gets difficult at times to comment as much as you would like especially since my job is so unpredictable. I do enjoy all the different types of post's from everyone all around the country (even the SEC bandwagon!)

Like War Eagle i can't for the life of me remember how i found this site, but im glad i did. Take Care everyone and HookEmHorns!

Hey guy's just came across this funny Tom Brady joke thought i would share it with my fellow bloggers:

Three quarterbacks, Peyton Manning, Tony Romo and Tom Brady, go to heaven to visit God to watch the Celtics play a game. God decides who will sit next to him by asking the boys a question... God asks Peyton Manning first: "What do you believe?" Peyton thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says, "I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my fans." God can't help but see the essential goodness of Manning, and offers him a seat to his left. Then God turns to Tony Romo and says, "What do you believe?" Tony says, "I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I've always tried to be a true sportsman, both on and off the playing fields." God is greatly moved by Tony's sincere eloquence, and he offers him a seat to his right. Finally, God turns to Tom Brady: "And you, Tom, what do you believe?" Tom replies, "I believe you're in my seat."

Wareagle ATL I agree, with your post regarding this blog.I have only blogged on one other site which was purley political. I really enjoyed the posts there, but Kinky lost the election. I'm a pro-choice gun owner thats against toll roads and border fences.
One thing that we all agree on is our passion for College Football. This site allows folks from different parts of the world, with completeley different backgrounds and problems come together and visit about something they all enjoy.

It's interesting to hear that you like me sprinkling in my opinion, WEA. It's something that I try not to do too often, because I think the community at large is the true voice of the site. I'll look to mixing it up a little more.

OU-Ron, since you decided to ask for the specifics, I'll tell you.

I was looking for the Longhorns' 2006 schedule and I found this one. I posted on there a couple of times and then I came back this year to look for their schedule and then became a regular poster on here.

A funny thing happened on the way to the porn site--I found fanblogs!!!! The Triple X of CFB! Nice, Ramblin!

Kevin: I think you should do more than just be the guy behind the curtain pulling the levers. It's your baby. You don't inject too much opinion into the body of the post, so it's okay to come at it in the comments section once the usual suspects have had a chance to chime in.

I like how new guys occasionally like to challenge Kevin. They used to get promptly ignored. Nowadays, the regulars usually call these guys out if they're off-base, not because Kev needs defending, but because there's more cohesion within the group.

Kevin may not want us to vote for fanblogs because he doesn't really generate the threads in the same manner that the opinion-piece bloggers do, but it's hard to find a site that's more welcoming to fans of all schools. It'll be interesting to see how it evolves more over time.

But there's no way that I would ever vote jack crap for a blog with some girl's name in it, unless that's the girl who's actually doing the blogging. Sorry, but I don't think that Suzy Kolber or Jenny Slayter are the actual writers. Nothing screams 'creepy' or 'stalker' more than that kind of eery shout-out. You'd think that some of these blog titles were being created by the same guys who name race horses and rock bands...

Ron: Like all the free government publications that are available, TE produces pamphlets on every topic related to LSU.

    Send a SASE to:

    Tiger Roar
    PO Box 90421
    Pueblo, CO 80812

Tomcat: Hey, small world. I'm a pro-choice NRA member, too, who thinks that government should get out of our personal lives. But I don't go on political blogs. They're too vicious and I don't like bringing my M-14 to an intellectual gunfight against someone armed only with hand-held emotion. Not a fair fight...

Best site on the internet. I know you all think I am a GA homer and hell, I guess I am. But, it's great to come on here and get input from true fans. I mean if TE can't convince you that LSU is the best team around, Corso surely can't. Two things to do everyday, go to work and go to fanblogs.com. The rest is just Gravy. As a matter of fact, my wife told me just before I logged on here, "if you go to that damn football blog, I am calling and cancelling the internet tomorrow." And to think I took her to the Sugar Bowl with me! Thanks for the site Kev and long live Fanblogs.

    GO DAWGS!

Hey guys, you've all said it well. Fanblogs definitely has the best community on any blog - sports-related or not - that I've ever been on.

It's really the only place on the internet you can have an intelligent (usually :-D) discussion with well-informed fans. We're all passionate about our teams, but keep everything classy and logical.

Some blogs, like the blog at AllCanes, are essentially essays that get a couple of comments. The pieces are fun to read, but can't match the community factor of Fanblogs. Others, like Eye on the U, are informative and written by a very reliable source, but have comments sections that are impossible to navigate through to the intelligent posts. (Sorry for the Miami-flavored examples....)

Huge props to Kevin for creating the Fanblogs environment by getting us going on each thread and then adding to the commentary.

The other great thing about Fanblogs is that it's so diverse. There's fans of almost every major program that all post regularly on here and provide input from so many different viewpoints.

Fanblogs MUST win the community award, or I've lost all faith in Rocky Top Talk... granted, I just heard about Rocky Top Talk like 6 minutes ago when I read Kev's post, but the faith will be gone nonetheless....

My hope is that we continue to evolve. When I made the decision to sell the site to Rivals in 2006 (? - cant remember exactly when - may have been 07... anyway) the intent was for the site to grow to host lots of different bloggers from all different fanbases. The Rivals guys have been nice enough to keep me around to ride herd as an editor.

My goal is to re-write some code in the offseason (perhaps freshen the look, too) and try to give yall an opportunity to initiate some posts.

Our counter dropped again, down to about 14,222 active readers. Must have been Notre Dame fans dropping en masse after last season's debacle. That and a lot of the old USC fans have withered away.

Kevin: What ever happened to Pete Holiday since the site was sold? I know he's over at Fanhouse now. Also, Ben Prather. Is Ben one of the originals on here? I know he posts some threads here and there.

Maybe you can add more photos to some of the threads, for those more visual folks...

Even though I do not agree with alot of his veiws.I really like the idea of thinking outside the box and I generally support independents that dont have a chance at winning.
At my uncles house there is a standing rule- no politics-period.

Porky: So were you 'Matt'? That's the only post that seems to match your writing style...

Zac: When you figure that out, you be sure to let us know, huh?

I think it would be fun if some fanblog's guys chose some game or two every year for as many folks as possbile to attend, as neutral observers, then report on the activities in a thread for everyone else to read. It's one thing for homers to tell us how cool their game day atmosphere is, quite another for impartial judges to say the same thing.

Two years ago at the Auburn/LSU game, we met a couple from California who were sitting in front of us who traveled all that way just to take in a big SEC matchup. I thought it was a really cool idea. Based on my experiences from taking in the occasional GA Tech game, being at a big-time CFB game with nothing to lose is kind of fun. You can rejoice if they win, you don't take it too hard if they lose.

I think a good first game for the fanblogs traveling crew would be a trip to South Bend. Yes, the Irish are much maligned on here, but who wouldn't want to say that they've seen a game there? I think the rest of the readers would be interested in our opinion. At the very least, it could be a good time. Obviously, expenses would be tough for most, but you never know...

I was going to take in a game somewhere last year, but a death in my immediate family precluded that possibility. I think I may do it this year. I'm thinking a Big 10(11) or Big 12 game.

If we could only get Kev to spring for the offical fanblogs hospitality tent...

I have taken neutral friends to games at Jordan Hare. One is an Ohio State fan and one a Florida State fan.

The Ohio State fan said he enjoyed the atmosphere but said that he prefered Ohio State.

The florida State fan saw us beat Florida so there may have been some bias.

However he did say that was the loudest game he had ever seen. Id have to agree with him. It was louder then any game ive ever been to including the iron bowl.

Tigerman: Have to ever been to another big college game, one where Auburn wasn't playing? Perhaps even an Alabama game? We watch other games on TV all the time, but think about how much fun would it be to be an impartial judge of it being there in person?

The first non-Auburn football game I ever saw live was the 1991 FSU- BYU Pigskin Classic out in LA, when I just happened to be out there on business for a few weeks. It was kinda cool. FSU won big.

The only non auburn game ive seen was Florida State and Colorado.

I was pulling for CU since im originally from there but it was still a great atmosphere.

But since it was a blow out wasnt much of a game.

Im with you id love to see a Notre Dame game in South Bend.

Im not sure I could be an impartial judge at an Alabama game. Been told I was too bias. However I try hard not to be when I watch them.

Georgia vs Florida would be one id like to see.
    or Florida vs Florida State.

    Interesting idea you have.
