1st & 10: WEA's predictions for 2008

Speaking of making predictions, I was wondering what we might be expecting in the way of some new threads. So last night I called Miss Cleo, that Jamaican psychic lady who charges $4.99 a minute. She's really nice, by the way, and surprisingly well-informed on college football. Anyway, I mentioned that football news was kind of drying up this time of year and wanted to get her input about what might happen here soon with the upcoming season. Here's what she predicted.

1) Charley Cheesburger will make a major announcement sometime here soon--either about where he's going to eat dinner tonight or about starting quarterbacks--take your pick...

2) Yea, she did mention Perrilloux getting into trouble again, but I informed her that we already knew that and we didn't need to pay $4.99 a minute
to get a blinding flash of the obvious...

3) Expect USC to be ranked #1 in 14 pre-season magazine polls, 28 online polls, by 19 TV sports commentators and 438 sports radio guys...

4) Michigan will continue issuing denials all summer that they ever really wanted Les Miles to come to Ann Arbor... (Hey Les: Call me!! Bill)

5) Alabama will announce a major stadium expansion, with seating exceeding over 100,000-- just in time for next year's spring game, which will feature a Cirque Du Soleil performance, a concert by The Back-Street Boys, and a magic show for the kids. Anything to take their mind off the upcoming season...

6) In a cruel reversal of roles with his players, Bob Stoops will be the one arrested and hauled into court. The charge: Impersonating a coach during bowl season. Stoop's attorneys will try to keep the venue in Oklahoma. The prosecution will attempt to get it moved to Texas...

7) Auburn will attempt for the first time to implement a true spread offense, and will have great success with it. It will widen the spread by which other teams will be favored over the Tigers...

8) Kansas will have another successful season and will play in a BCS bowl. The opponent will be Maryland--not because the Terps will have a great year, but simply because they'll need Ralph Friegden on one side of the field to balance out Mark Mangino on the other so the stadium won't tilt...

9) One Bowden will retire, one will get fired, one will get employed again, and three assistant-coach Bowdens will change jobs. We might need an abacus to keep up with all that...

10) An internal audit by Rivals.com over subsidiary fanblogs.com will reveal that the feedburner is off a little. Despite showing 16,000 readers, the reality will show that it's only 8 guys in Florida, 4 in Louisiana, 3 in Michigan, 6 in Texas and Oklahoma (hard to tell them apart) and one guy in Atlanta...

Miss Cleo is definately off her game, she missed a bunch of obvious ones:

Steve Spurrier will cry about something at South Carolina and vaguely threaten to leave

Ohio State will once again choke

Georgia will yet again screw up a championship season with a dumb loss

Bobby Petrino will quit, (where is he now? Oh yeah, Arkansas) and go to the pros.

    and finally...
with true freshmen starting at almost every position, Miami will once again beat Florida

    GO CANES!

Come on Ron! I thought you'd like that one! Come up with some of your own. That's kind of the point to this! I can't do all the work here...

Exile: Cleo had more to say, but the phone card I was...eh...um...using ran out of minutes. It's not cheap calling the Caribbean...

But yes, how could we forget that Miami alumnus Mark Richt always has ONE loss in him. Probably to the Gators or Auburn...

And how Spurrier will once again threaten to take his old ball and go home...

It kills me to hear Auburn fans talking about CMR always having bad loss when the coach of their team has won (10) or more games in a season twice in 9 years...not to mention that killer year he had in 03 when they started out preseason #3. You guys take your one undefeated season and we'll take our winning (10) games 5 out of CMR's 7 years.

Hey, TE has emerged from his formaldehyde-laced Fema travel trailer to rejoin us! TE: Check the open thread. We have a bit of a wager going on...

Dawgfan: Not a single item in the thread body mentions Georgia or Richt. That comment came from the gallery. I think that Georgia will probably have a pretty good year.

However, Miss Cleo did tell me that during the rubber chicken circuit this summer, Richt will be trying to convince Bulldog booster clubs across the state that despite Georgia's customary annual faceplant against Florida, that it will still be possible to win a national championship this season. But only if every other national powerhouse loses twice or more like last season...

Okay, I'm in LAX waiting for my flight to SFO, having emerged from a haze of non-stop meetings for 3 days, and I find another WEA top 10 list on FB. It fills me with the desire to post a top 10 list of obvious responses we will see on this thread.

#10: Someone from outside the SEC will complain about the perpetual talk of SEC supremacy.

#9: Someone from the SEC will proclaim the supremacy of their conference.

#8: Somehow, this thread will devolve into a debate over SEC supremacy.

#7: No Notre Dame fans will show up to protect the honor of Charlie "My Gastric-Bypass Exploded" Chesseburger because no Irish fan has recovered from the shame of last season.

#6: An OU fan will insult the honor of the Longhorns.

#5: A UT (the one in Texas, not Tennessee) fan will respond in kind.

#4: We'll have to move the SEC supremacy debate to another blog as the Red River feud will take over this one.

#3: Some UGA fan will post an upset reply trying to express a humorous point, proving he has no sense of humor on either the giving or taking side of the equation.

#2: An OSU fan will drop in to proclaim that THIS is the year of the buck-nut and there's NO WAY they'll choke in this year's BCSCG.

#1: Someone, offended by this post, will respond either humorously or angrily, pronouncing what an idiot Ramblin' Gator is.

There! I said it! Can I get another beer before the plane takes off?

Our coaches in Texas may be imposters but them imposters sure do know how to win a BCS bowl game in dramatic fashion.

RG you should have added that "Horns fan attempts to grab and rip Stoops hairy beanbag only to feel that there is nothing between the mans legs!" See, Rambling has the right idea--come up with your own list and paste it on here, then the rest of us can throw tomatoes at you. If it's really good, you can post it twice like him. Looks like someone had a few too many beers at the airport bar...

Schmed #28: Nice sound effect! Hey, who was that somewhat older coach a few years ago whose players showered him with Gatorade and he later caught pneumonia and died? I thought it was Jack Pardee, but I looked and it wasn't. Maybe someone else named Jack. Anyone?

Yes, how could we forget tOSU going for the trifecta of losing to an SEC team in the championship game?

Kevin should call my column 3rd and Ten instead, because if I'm the one writing threads these days, it's pretty much desperation time. But at least I'm going to chuck it long, rather than run it up the middle... :-)

OU Ron, Post #38, say that again! When Texas was winning the SWC and the early stages of the Big 12 and LOSING BOWL GAMES...most Texas fans I worked around/knew STATED at least we?(Texas)beat Oklahoma and won the conference. I know cause I live in Austin! Texas wins 2, I say two, BCS games and Texas fans think that this has been happening forever! Another prediction for 2008...when Oklahoma beats Texas again we will heard the ifs, ands, buts, the woulda, coulda, and shoulda. We will also hear how Barry Switzer "cheated" if Oklahoma wins the National Title.

Thanks #53 OU Ron interesting photos, Na I'm nowhere near Bayou Bob's, I'm south from Austin in God's country. Its really a good area inbetween the hill country and the sand hills not too far from the coast bout 2 hours and with in about an hour of San Antonio. We have abondant wildlife and spring fed rivers.Parts of the area I've been working was cleared for farmland many years ago an then abandoned so all the South Texas brush has taking over. There are alot of really nice Whitetail deer, Turkey and like everywhere else around here way too many wild hogs, they are really a nuisance and we shoot them on almost a daily basis. They are covered in parasites and waller next to the oil wells to releive themselves of the ticks & lice that they are infested with. My old 99 model .300 Savage does the trick, but they multiply worse than rats and can have three liters a year.
BTW we have snakes too,but I wouldnt consider catching babies and bottling them thats some off the wall-B/S if ya ask me.

WEA: I think the interuption of the OU-NU game was the one major unholy concession during the Big 12 creation negotiations. The thinking was probably that the two teams would meet every year in the 12 Championship game anyhow. Now both North and South, like the rest of the nation, have slightly more parody, but you can still reasonably expect both programs to be the favorite to meet in that game most years. I most admit that I am relieved to be entering the 2 year stretch again where we play in the regular season..

The added twist of Pelini and the Stoops having gone to the same high school and being good friends should add a new and fresh dimension to the rivalry.

In addition, unlike NU vs. MU or CU or KU, NU vs. OU has an element of respect between teams that is very unique even when they hate each other. I can't speak for the OU vs. UT series in that regard, but I would suspect the situation is comparable.

Pretty ironic then that Nebraska has met Texas in the Big XII championship game(2) more times than OU (1).

See, I thought that the XII was like the SEC that in addition to playing all 5 members of your own division every year, you played 3 others from the opposite, with a combination of permanent games and rotators. However, it appears that all three games are rotators, with no permanent team from the opposite side.

How could the XII let that happen? Doesn't any of the other schools in the north want to play anyone from the south on a regular basis? I can't think right now of any long-standing rivalries from north and south teams other than OU-Nebraska. And yes, I do know that the north is primarily old Big 8 schools and the south is old Southwestern schools...

But I will say this: If I was Texas, I would have been raising holy hell during the conference formation convention demanding one permanent-conference game from the opposite side. If that would have happened, naturally Nebraska and Oklahoma would have continued their series, giving Texas a little help in wrestling the south crown from the Sooners. And every other school should have been concerned that without OU in Nebraska's path any longer, the Huskers might have had a cake-walk into the title game every year.

Granted, you didn't see that last year. I'm still trying to figure out if Kansas and Missouri were really that good, or it was an illusion caused by the void of a good Husker team...

    Thoughts, Twelvers?

Upon further review, maybe the three rotators in the XII make sense, being that the new entity is the bastard child of two old conferences, and the prevailing wisdom is letting them fight for the newly united Big XII crown.

A much different animal in the SEC, where they had to split down the middle a group that basically had been playing together for 100 years. Auburn was the odd man out and sacrificed itself for the betterment of the new SEC. We really should have been an eastern division school, and Vanderbilt should have been in the west. We only had long-running rivalries with two schools in the west, Alabama and Miss State, where we had three in the east, with Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee.

When the conference re-aligned in 1992, the format was going to be with one permanent game and two rotators. Auburn, having been put in the west, cried foul, wanting to preserve at least two out of three of our long rivalries. It was a bad loss that we had to drop Tennessee from the schedule--hell, it had taken us until 1980 to finally get the damn Vowels to come play us in Auburn. But at least we got to keep Georgia, the oldest rivalry in the deep south, and Florida, who's nascent prep talent crop was becoming more and more important to our recruiting success.

But all that changed after 2002, when the SEC decided to drop it to one permanent and two rotators. We had to kiss the Gators goodbye, which reduced our exposure in the sunshine state, yet there was no way we could leave Georgia. Thus, our current status.

Don't get me wrong, I've really been enjoying the new rivalries with LSU and even R-Kansas, but I sure do miss the Vols and Gators every year. No team in the SEC played all the big schools every single year like Auburn did, and we kind of miss that. Part of me hopes for a defection someday, perhaps resulting in a chance for us to join the east, but I just don't think that would happen.

The Missouri and Kansas phenomenons are definitely transitory created in the black hole of Husker football history that will define the Bill Callahan era. Last year's Husker team was not only the worst team in my lifetime, but quite probably the worst team in Husker history. And it's not from a lack of talent. Callie actually did excel at recruiting, particularly from nutrient rich states such as Texas, Florida, and California, but his coaching philosophy and schemes, while ok for the pros, were woefully inappropriate for college football, especially smashmouth Husker tradition football.

Returning Joe Ganz at QB (he should have been the starter all of last year as is easily proven by his stats put up as starter during the last 3 games of 2007), and Marlon Lucky (never given a chance under BC to get into the kind of rhythm he is capable of), along with a Bo Pelini defense that can't help but to be at least 1000 times better than Cosgrove's inept desolation of the Black Shirts, will all add up to an immediate return of control in the Big XII North to Nebraska.

Kansas is about as likely to remain as a Top 25 powerhouse as their coach is likely to live beyond another 10 years. Missouri has benefited from some talent like Chase Daniels, but does not have the tradition, facilities, money, or coaching to maintain much beyond a tie with Colorado for 2nd place in the North. Colorado may have made a worse mistake with Dan Hawkins than Nebraska did with Callahan. At least Callie had some proven big time successes on his resume. Hawk at Boise State was little more than a successful high school coach in the WAC.

NU and OU will filter back to the top of the 12, with UT in the mix just to make things interesting.

I think you're going to fit right in around here, Chris...

Do you think that Nebraska is going to go back to running the ball again, or stay about the same as they were under Callahan? I worry about Auburn embracing the spread and what effect it will have with our rushing attack.

Sometimes I think I'm the only guy around who still likes running the ball...

You know War Eagle, all signs from the players and coaching staff so far (3 days into spring practices) incidate that the major changes are mostly happening on defense, but that Shawn Watson as O.C. will basically simplify and streamline the BC WCO (he now calls it the "Nebraska Offense"). Offensive production really wasn't the problem under Callie, although the running game needs to be revived. The good news is that the O-line depth seems to be the strongest aspect of the team this year. I think the running game will slowly open up, but we'll still throw a shitload in the first year.

But you didn't share how YOU felt about it, Chris. See, in CFB group therapy, I often turn to Husker fans. They're often the only ones who can relate to how I feel about the deterioration of the rushing attack in this pass-happy world of ours...

Well, when pressed for my opinion, I must admit WEA, I'm an old school mofo. And I'm a Tom Osborne Husker. If you can't pound the rock up, down, and all around, then you aren't worthy of powerhouse status. The only truly impressive passing game comes from absolute fear of the rock being rammed down your throat on every single damn play...

Chris, that's what I miss most about the Nebraska-OU games of old, both schools had great RB's year after year.

I remember the Thanksgiving day games every year and would be a toss up on who the winner would be.

That's when Osborne and Switzer was some great coaches...

"Here's hoping both of our teams end up on top of the 12 once and for all as God meant it to be..."

Husker, does an all-time 57-40 record vs. OU mean nothing to you? Not to mention, Texas might climb into the number two spot this year on the all-time wins list. All we need is another bad season from Cheeseburger Charlie and his overhyped recruits. You might want this stat, too. Texas is 8-4 against Neb.

As to Missouri and Kansas, I think they'll both be good for another year or two and then fall back into the shadows of their stronger Big XII foes. They were really that good, THIS YEAR, their bowls games really help to show that, but I don't think the recruiting world will be good enough to them to be able to stay in the spotlight long.

Bevo: I meant absolutely no offense to the Longhorns. Of course UT is a major perennial powerhouse in the conference. The comments made above were just a continuation of a discussion centered around the history and importance of the OU vs. Nebraska matchup. I wasn't trying to steal any of your thunder.

Having said that, I do think that Texas has a huge advantage over both OU and NU in terms of the geography of the recruiting game. Texas high school football is a bastion of talent compared to the smaller, less populated states. And the Horns have basically first pick of the crop every year, as it should be.

I would consider OU, UT, and NU the top tier of the Big XII based on history, tradition, and games/titles won. Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, OSU, A&M are probably the middle tier right now going into this season. KSU, ISU, TT, and Baylor are the bottom tier.

Again in talking about the North vs. South scheduling dilemma, although I'm glad to be playing OU for the next 2 years, the cost is not playing your Horns for the next 2 years. It would be nice if our 3 teams could work out something like WEA has talked about.

Great stuff...although if I was lazy I could just say something stupid and wait for someone here to correct me...the Fanblogs crowd is fairly hardcore in the statistics department; one of the reasons I love this site.

Tomcat post #86, Oklahoma is the top team in the Big 12, period. Despite that Texas leads the Red River rivalry, if you're trying to define the top team in the conference, to me the school with the most Big 12 titles would define the best. Bevo Boy, I'm sure you know this but you forgot the 5 ties. Husker Chris, welcome. I always enjoy debating and talking about OU NU with Nebraska fans. OU-Ron, for some reason I thought Joey Halzle was a senior last year. I was wrong. What the hell was I thinking. And from what I hear, the defense was spectacular against the offense last week. That is a good sign. BOOMER!

I think Nichols will be the backup to bradford, and yeah it's great to see the defense so strong.

#110 Husker Chris I dont really beleive that you should try to catrgorize any teams from the XII as top-teir, middle teir and bottom teir.
I do not like the TTech Red Raiders and they usually feild a real competetive team year after year. The Red Raiders beat Oklahoma and Texas A&M so I wouldnt try to categorize them as bottom teir, their pass happy offense can run up some points and win games,This season they will start off in the national top-ten. The Names of teams and tradition dont really mean as much as it used to and teams like TTech can whup you in the final seconds.

Husker Chris Hope your looking foward to the Blackshirts return, because yall are going to have to try and stop one of the top offenses in the country Oct 11 when yall go to Jones Stadium in Lubbock. That bottom teir team will probably beat the Huskers like the last time they played them.

TCat: Your point about TT is well taken. I agree their offense is potent when it clicks (they put a ridiculous whoopdown on NU in 2004)and I'm not all about classifying the 12 into tiers as it varies considerably year to year. I will say that the Red Raiders have beaten Nebraska only twice in their entire history, both times under the Callie/Cosgrove era. If there is one thing you can be certain of it is that Pelini will resurrect the D considerably in comparison to those days. I'll give TT more respect as soon as they post some conference or national championships, BCS appearances, or an above mediocre winning percentage against the rest of the conference.

Suffices to say that I wouldn't hold my breath for them to beat Nebraska this year. Also I disagree that tradition doesn't mean much for teams like Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Texas. All 3 teams may have down years but none of them will ever stay down. And yes, OSU = Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Yes, Yalls D will definetly improve, and 2007 was really a crazy year. The last two NU vs UT games were both real exciting and close.Glad yall get the Sooners & Red Raiders this year. I have to agree that Calihans pro-style game didnt really fit and the big red faithful that want to see a strong running game and a tough D.Texas also has the same traditions and our pass=D really sucked at times last year and the boys pulled out several close ones that could have went the other way.
Good luck with yalls upcoming season

    Kevin,

Come on - give me a break. I don't see the Trojans as starting off at #1. I only see them ending up at #1. Just kidding! I think that Ohio State has the returning QB along with Beanie Wells and should probably be favored in the early game. Other great teams next year will be Georgia, Florida, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri and Kansas and maybe LSU again. The Trojans would be fortunate to overcome all those teams.
There will be a new QB in Mark Sanchez or Mitch Mustain. The whole offensive line needs to be rebuilt, basically, and that will take some time. Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson are alot to lose on that defensive line - as is Keith Rivers at OLB. The Trojans are not wiithout concerns entering the season. Don't forget that TE Fred Davis was the "go to" pass catcher and he is gone also. The bright spot is that WR Damian Williams is supposed to be fantastic and will improve the receiving corps.
No, I do not see USC as the #1 team entering next season. I think that they have a shot at being a very good team by the time it's all said and done. But, I will not be surprised if Ohio State takes down USC in Los Angeles early in the year. I would venture to say that I would favor USC in the 2009 game in Columbus. That will be USC's year. Next year is wide open for about 10 different teams at least. And, I don't think USC can go unbeaten. I think that Arizona State will be improved and that UCLA will be a much better team by season's end. So, there will be three very tough games for USC right there. If they only lose one - maybe they have a shot.
