Ok, guys, just want you to know that what is said in this thread, stays in this thread. Don't go around sharing anyone else's stories of addiction.
But if we're truly going to bare our souls, you each have to take off the mascot head you're wearing while in here. Lee...
Okay, my name is Greg. It's been months since my last...wait. Sorry. That's confession. Sorry. I'm not even Catholic. Can you guys tell that I've never been to a 12-step program? Seriously.
Anyway, let me continue. You know, I was doing fine, getting along without it. Sure , I'd talk with some other guys about it, and the funny thing is that I thought I could do without it.
But last night, I... I...Well, I had recorded Auburn's spring game and I decided to watch it. You know how some times that alcoholics will drink mouthwash? Well, that's what this was like. I had never seen a spring game before--never, not in 23 seasons.
But I just couldn't stand it. Not only was I jonesing for some football, but I was longing for some cheesy head coach commercials, too--like the kind you find on the coaches shows. I was so desperate, I just had to watch it. I mean, I didn't even know how the score was kept. I thought I was delirious. The same team kept getting the ball back, except that they switched directions. That poor defense! How can they just stay on the field perpetually? Doesn't anyone care about their welfare?
In the end, I wasn't satisfied with what I got. It was kind of like eating baked potato chips. I thought I could just stop with the sping game, you know, just get a little taste. But afterwards, I just grabbed an old tape of the 1989 Alabama game, then stayed up all night watching that.
You know what they say about 'rock bottom'? Yeah. Let me tell you. I think I'm there, brother...Somebody save me!

It's too early for me to say that OU will be in the championship game, we need to get our 13 starters back from injury and some practice under their belt before we can say how good they will be, however I think USC has a pretty good chance of being there...

Yea, I'm not a golpher either. Just doesn't appeal to me. It's more like an activity than a sport, albeit a highly skilled activity--even more so than bowling and shuffleboard, if you ask me. And it allows for alcohol consumption while you're at it. Now that I think about it, I have no idea why I don't like it...
And even though my knees left me 10 years ago and I can no longer play sports, I still have that prejudice. Maybe I'll change my mind one day, but with working retail hours, it would be hard to find the time until I retire in 10 years.
Ron, the heavy equipment business sounds a lot like the car biz--there's always an excuse why people aren't buying. The weather is too bad, the weather is too nice, holidays--especially Christmas, kids out of school, kids back in school, yada yada yada...
Maybe once before I die, I want to own a business that sells something that people will buy during frickin Christmas!! Liquor store, maybe? The perfect business--non seasonal, non-cyclical. Times are good? Sell a lot of booze. Times are bad? Sell even more...

WEA:
"It's more like an activity than a sport..." Actually, I disagree with that. It does look that way, but looks are deceiving. The clubhead is traveling between 90 to 110 mph depending on your ability during the full swing. Some pros get up to 130 mph. Those that play well are definitely athletes. Bowling and shuffleboard don't require near the strength, flexibility, and coordination golf requires.
So...instead of golf, how about flag football? Hey, that kind of has something to do with the theme of the site, too! (I know, I know, I started the golf conversation). I get together with a group of guys almost every Saturday morning and play for a few hours.

Yes, yes USC caught their latest Nebraska series while Callie and Cosgrove had our pants down, but those days are over. NU is capable of 'breaking through' the Big 12 any year under any circumstances. Let's touch base midway through 08 about this. Got to go watch the pro's at the Zurich Classic in New Oleans last weekend and had a blast. The PGA's slogan "these guys are good" cannot be fully appreciated until you watch them play. Bubba Watson hits the golf ball like he's trying to knock the writing off of it...LOL.

Ditto on the Sunday's instead of Saturdays, unless it's an early game! I haven't seen Bubba yet, but I hope to see him at the Memorial this year. It's very easy to follow some great players when Tiger's in the field. Everybody follows him so you can get great access to everybody else. Furyk, Singh, Appleby, Toms, Campbell, Stricker...my favorite player to watch is Ben Curtis, though. He grew up 15 miles from where I live now. I hope Nicklaus invites him again this year.
Most of the guys that are not household names, like Stricker, are good to follow. Stricker is 4th in the world, but when Tiger's in the field, it doesn't matter and nobody really knows who he is anyway. Els and Mickelson are still followed a lot due to their name recognition.

2007 Masters Champion Zach Johnson lives about one block away from me. I haven't met him yet, but I see him walking in front of my house from time-to-time. The only reason I know he lives there is because...
I know Chris DiMarco. His daughter and my daughter are classmates and have occasional play-dates together.
I've played two (non-miniature) rounds of golf in my life and just don't understand the appeal of the game. For me, the only thing more boring than playing the game is watching the game, but I'm not telling Chris that.
Oddly enough, I've played a round of miniature golf with Chris' daughter and about 20 other kids and adults and she is good! She beat all of us!
Meanwhile, I couldn't care less about golf!

War Eagle, I may be able to join you if you come up for an OSU or Notre Dame game, but no way would my parents let me travel to Dallas.
As for the golf discussion, I just picked up the sport last year and am already #2 on my high school varsity team (yes, if you must know, our team is terrible). I have gotten quite a bit of help from my aunt, who is the golf coach for the University of Cincinnati. I even was a tournament yesterday, but I played pretty bad.

"Jarts", God does that take me back. No! I ain't sayin how far!!!
Golf, on the other hand...well...it takes me back too. I used to caddie for my father. He was in a league where he worked.
Me? As in, where have I been? I've been in College Football Deprivation Rehabilitation. It didn't work; I'm incurable.
Lennie wants pre-predictions. Well, I got one for you. Before summer drills end, OU-Ron will have squared off with Tomcat; you will have squared off with 40 Acres of Burnt Orange, and for good measure Leave it to Bevo (Boy) will square off with OU-Fan. There'll be some interesting College Football WWF going on there to be sure.
Looks like I missed a lot of threads while I wuz away. I got a big kick outta the Big East's proposal for...what would that be, bowl # 34 or 35, and with Conf USA?
Gator Hippy, another hole in the head or no, is it mathematically possible for the Big East to send 7 teams to bowls? If it is, I'm willing to go out on this limb: Not in my life-time.
War Eagle had some great proposed names for it. I tend to lean toward, "Another Game to Give 2 More 6-6 or 5-7 Teams a Chance to Play in the Post Season Bowl."
Which brings me to Regan. I'm in favor of the economic boost, however brief, that bringing a bowl game to a community can give. The thing is the bowl has to survive if it's going to continue. If those who sponsor it don't get their coin, all it might wind up being is a bad experiment. Not to mention, the fans have to be willing to come see the game. Only programs like AL & ND, to name a few, could pull fans to a game even if their teams were 6-6. Of course, that would be typical for AL (recently) and a vast improvement for ND. Who'da thunk it?

I pefer fishing, yes and I do not golf, but I really like golf courses. The ones in this area are built in the river bottoms. They keep the grass mowed down real short and keep them watered year round.I go out on the golf course right at dawn, prior to the golfers. We have large native earthworms that are excellent natural bait.
The store bought worms are not as slimey as the ones I juice up at the golf courses. These worms are about as thick as a pencil or cigarette and can measure in length from 10" to 18".
I dont dig them up and I do not cause any damage to the golf courses. I use a real weak chemical solution, that is applied to the mounds. They come up out of the ground and we gather them up.
These worms are the best bait that you can get and I've caught some really big fish on these worms.
Ya I like golf courses, and when it floods and the river comes out of its banks, you can catch alot of fish on the golf course itself.

Hey Ron, I had one of those all-day meeting days yesterday. Actually, I have a lot of them, but this one was different. I was testifying before a Texas House of Representatives Committee - never done anything like this previously. Before you ask, no - it had nothing to do with steroid use in sports. ;-) It was about software standards in state government. So I had to sit in the meeting room for five and a half hours, they call my name, I testify for 10 minutes, then I get on a plane and fly home. Not sure I'll be volunteering for that particular duty again.
Back to football...
I'm disappointed to see another GT quarterback is looking like something less than the sharpest tool in the shed. Jaybo Shaw was arrested recently and he's still in high school. Crud! Reggie Ball may end up being remembered as the bright one of the two.

Leave it to Bevo, OU-Ron, & Tomcat, I wuz gonna chastise you 3 for the "worms" thing… I mean, you talk about worms when you're serving spaghetti, just like you talk about maggots when you're serving rice. BUT, since uze gize have gotten back to college football… (Look at me, the pot calling the kettle "black". OU-Ron, wasn't it you and me who caused a thread to close by discussing SUV's?)
Some gnu gnus: (Remember, there's no gnus like good gnus. I can't believe I let my kids watch that show.) LSU & WVU are on for a home-&-home starting in New Orleans 2010. Looking for Tiger land to chime in with their thoughts. (OU-Ron/Tomcat, I would really like to see a series with OK or TX. To hell with it! Make that OK AND TX.)

Hey Zac me and my ole navy buddy (who is a current student at WVU) have been waiting forever for a WVU vs Texas contest. I think the closest we have come so far is in basketball. Would love to have a home and home with a big east team especially WVU.

Ramblin, you had my hopes up there for a minute LOL, just kidding Texas----I had to testify in a trial in west Texas last year, believe me that was no fun---those folks in west texas live in a world all their own...
40Acres, there's good news and there's good news, the first good news is your right, Kelly can Rap better than the Texas team can dance, and the other good news is they're both from Texas...
Zac, could have been me about the SUV thing, but I don't think so, at least I don't remember it, besides this is open thread, I thought we could talk about anything, including those south Texas 20" worms, Damn thats big worms.....

Right now the water hazard is my yard at the biginning of Greers Ferry Lake. It used to be good fishin' back in the early years. It does have three world records last I checked. I might could fit in is town, as long as it isn't big. I would rather step in cow crap in the field as dog crap on the sidwalk. I only do that if I have to. The way I see it, people watching me pee have the bigger problem.

Hey Porcine Looks like your in a beatiful area.
Greers ferry lake looks like the kind of place I would love to visit. I agree with you about small town life and looks like your in a great place.
BTW those Razorbacks are coming to Austin this year and it ought to be an exciting matchup.

40 Acres (Post 61), I'll tell you what. WVU has played TX twice & OK once in BB over the past 18 months. If those games are any indication, then OK, TX, & WV sports were made for each other. Now, WVU didn't win any of those games, but consider these facts: The 3 games involved 3 OT's and were decided by a total of 10 pts. Those are the kind of games fans love to watch.
Now, the Fiesta bowl may have resulted in a game half the fans loved and the other detested, but I'm not so smug as to think that the outcome would be the same in 50 games. Had WVU played OK in 2007 on Sept 1, 8, 15, or 21, the outcome may well have been different. The point is it's obvious to me that future match-ups (win or loose) between these schools will likely be very entertaining.
Tomcat, OU-Ron, OU-Fan, Lennie, Beveroni, you guys wanna chime in on this? What are your thoughts?
Porcine, Tomcat, I have to admit I like it out here in the mid-west, having come from and lived in far more densely populated areas back east. Now, we may not have gargantuan earth worms, nor am I in a position to pee out my back door. But, I can leave my door unlocked and my keys in my car if'n I wanna. That's a big plus!!! Odd thing: I used to enjoy fishing; not sure why I stopped.

OU-Ron, i actually lived in Odessa for a while back in the pre high school years. I did love Permian football but didn't love our house getting broken into by mexican gangs every other week. Thats why to this day i don't particulary care for sandy places with no grass or trees.

40 Acres, I didn't mind the landscape, in fact I kinda enjoyed the the visit other than everyone involved in the trial was related, the Judge had a niece on the jury and the opposing attorney was a cousin to the judge, needless to say, we lost...
On another note, I thought Mack had put someone in place to watch the players and keep them out of trouble, what's up with this....

#65 Porcine- Na Arkansas backed out of the 2009 game in Fayetteville and it has been officially postponed until 2013.Texas has already scheduled Wyoming to fill that date.
#66 Zac We would love to see future matchups against solid programs.Texas has future schedules posted on Mack Brown's website.Florida Atlantic, UL Monroe,Wyoming,UCLA,Rice,Ole Miss all have games scheduled against the Horns.
BTW sounds like you live in a safe area, I was burglarized one time in the eighties.I really didnt have much at the time T.V. rod & reels, stereo but, they wiped me out, even took my cast iron skillet & icechest.
Locks are made for honest folks, I understand that Canada has a low crime rate and folks leave stuff unlocked.
BTW the out the back door thing is just an expression used around here to mean living in the country, I dont think its to be used literally.

I don't know, guys. I think I'm begining to like this administration. Though, I must duly admit; I don't know that I like the sound of the government getting involved. That's a sure fired way to screw it up.

Ramblin G Thanks for the link.
Zac Ya when I first heard this I thought what the F. First its baseball players using something to inhance performance and now this, whats next a womans right to chose or Gay marrige, I'm sorry but it seems like there are alot more important issues for Congress to deal with at this time. These Congressmen have valid points and are trying to do whats best for their constituancy which probably includes wealthy political contributers that are Alumi from the acedemic institutions mentioned.
This is after all a CFB blog and not a political one so I'll try to refrain from talking politics.
We all know and agree that the BCS system is flawed and that not all schools benefit from its formation. Should the federal government be involved in how a MNC is determined?
kick backs, payoffs,covert operations
to determine the National Champion
The debate in itself is up for debate
consirescy theories, grassy noles, read my lips?
Thanks for the info Ramblin G

Want to know why this Auburn fan believes that Muschamp left Auburn.
Because if Auburn does go on to win the SEC this year he would recieve alot less credit for his defense and the new offence will be the star component.
Trust me Texas only lacks a good D to be right back in there. If he wins at Texas hes the star. At Auburn the exact opposite is true.Muschamp is looking to be like Bo Pellini and get a huge payday from an elite program. As soon as he turns Texas D around he will get the call to a big time program.
At Auburn in 2008 he was going to get less credit then he would have deserved. Hes a fine coach. Just my opinion but sure seems to fit the situation.Zac said:

Odd, and here I was all this time thinking Auburn was an elite program.
Personally, although AUtigerman has a point, I think Muschamp is padding is resume'. He's making bigger bucks; he's gaining new experience with another program in another conference with another way of doing business, and he's biding his time. After 2-5 years with the Long Horns, provided TX continues to be successful, and say win a Big-12 Championship or 2, not to mention beat the Sooners, he'll be ready to take the reigns of a decent program looking for a fresh perspective. Pitt or Syracuse comes to mind. JMO.

AUtigerman, I don’t know. The spread offense takes a full season to master. Even when a team appears to have it going the following season, it’s still not without some growing pains. As good as Auburn’s defense looked last year, and as sluggish as the offense looked early on, I don’t see where Muschamp might have thought he had anything to worry about...unless he somehow felt underappreciated and decided it was time to move on. While I would have to think you and guys like WarEagleAtlanta know your team and coaches better than I, at this point, it’s anyone’s guess.

#87 & #88 I did a little research and apparentley Muschamp was offered the same salary that Texas offered him at Auburn with a two year contract. He accepted the position at Texas making him the highest paid assistant coach in the XII.
So it wasnt about the money, perhaps he did what he thought was best for him and his family at this point in his career. Texas also runs a spread offense, and so what the heck difference does it make to a defensive coordinator as to what the offense runs anyhow?

The point im trying to make is that Auburn had a top 10 defense and a 109 ranked scoring offensein 2007.
So who would get the most credit for winning an SEC title in 08.Say what you want but if AU wins the west title Franklin will be the hero. Now Texas was exact opposite, there offense was highly ranked and there defense wasnt very good.
For a coach looking to land a BCS college head coach job the credit is important.
Listen if all Muschamp wanted was a head coach job he had the Southern Miss job rapped up. He didnt leave for money,He probably didnt like our AD, no one does. But i agree with ZAC, what better way to Pad a resume then to go to Texas and win a big tweleve title solely on the fact that you improved the defense.
Its just an opinion but its a valid thought.

ZAC 88
Im not sure (judging by your comments)if your aware but it didnt take Frankin any time at all to turn Troys offense around. They went from last to first in total offense in one season in the sun belt conference.
Also our best offensive showing of the season was our bowl game against Clemson and we only had a few weeks practice with the spread.I hope we stay under the radar but i have very high hopes for this season. The offense has to be an improvement over the last 2 years. And Muschap has recruited a strong defense for our new defensive coordinator.
Frankin brought in a junior college transfer that was taught byhimself this offense while in high school. Tubbs seems to think we can win now and im hoping hes right. Good luck with your teamTampa Hurricane

Rivals.com just posted an interesting breakdown of the NFL Draft this decade (2000 draft through 2007 draft).
Top 5 programs with most picks:
1. Miami 59
1. Ohio State 59
3. Florida State 52
4. Tennessee 50
5. Florida 45
5. Georgia 45Top 5 programs with most first round picks:
1. Miami 25
2. Florida State 13
2. Ohio State 13
4. Texas 12
5. Six teams tied at 8I find it interesting that recently there have been a lot of fans from Auburn and LSU claiming their draft dominance on fanblogs while neither school is in the top 10 in either overall picks or first round picks this decade.
