Predictions/Open Thread
On the slate this weekend, quite a few quality games, including some old rivaly games and some new rivalry games.
USC at Notre Dame: Despite the media desperately trying to make Notre Dame relevant again, the Trojans come into this one 10-point favorites. Can Jimmy Clausen, Heisman candidate (I chuckle every time I read that), compete with fellow Cal native Matt Barkley, or will USC make it 8 in a row? If the Irish win, look for a push from the media to rush them high in the polls, somewhere they might remain, considering their weak schedule. USC wins this convincingly, leaving Notre Dame with the longest losing streak to an opponent since Michigan State in the 50s and 60s.
Texas-Oklahoma: Formerly, the Red River Shootout, but moving towards the more politically correct nomme de guerre, The Inflamed Flowing Body of Water Gunfire Exchange and Texas State Fair, abbreviated RRS. Will the return of Bradford be enough to avenge last year's defeat to the Horns, or will Colt McCoy cement his Heisman campaign with a solid victory in Dallas? Yesterday, ESPN Classic replayed the 1969 RRS, Royal versus Fairbanks, which Texas won, 27-17. Boy, there sure was a lot of rushing in that game. Shame we won't see it in this one. I smell corndogs and an upset. I saw a bad omen this week-- Mack Daddy on TV giving the Hook'Em Horns sign incorrectly. Fingers down is hook em. Figers up is Ozzie. The crazy Sooner Schooner goes off the rails and beats Texas.
Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech: The Tekkie convention, held on the Flats at Grant Field--the oldest college football stadium in the country, hosting a new rivalry between ACC Costal division contenders. Despite me having to look up which division these teams are in every single time I mention it, this game has been a good one since the Hokies defected to the ACC. VT, who has rebounded tremendously since the opening loss to Alabama in the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game, is looking to make it three straight over the Ramblin Wreck, who are second in the nation in rushing offense. Fellow Fanblogger Ramblin Gator invited me to attend this game with him and I will eschew Auburn-Kentucky to mark my return to Grant Field in a looong time. We'll be sure to report on our good time back to the Live Thread. Again, I'm thinking upset. The Model A Coupes beat the Turkeys by a field goal or less.
So what games are you feeling strong about this weekend? Tell us about some upsets! Who's going where, who's cooking what? Crisp, cool air will descend upon the southeast for the first time this fall, so football is in the air. That and H1N1...
