Is this the first week in two years that Oklahoma didn't make the poll?

Everybody bashes the Big East, but as soon as Notre Dame beats Pitt then they are thrown into the top 14. If Notre Dame beats Michigan then they deserve it not for beating what so many called an overated Pitt team.

I'll buy Pitt as being overrated, but Notre Dame demolished them on their home turf which always counts for something. I don't think that ND is that far ahead of some of the other teams in the middle of the top 30 pack.
For example I don't think that Purdue, Georgia Tech and Arizona State are far behind the Golden Domers at this point. The nuances of polling are hard to get a handle on before every team has played at least one game. It really depends on who has a big time showing on any given Saturday. (ask Auburn)

Notre Dame at 14!? Are you kidding me? Yeah, they looked really good against Pitt on the road - I'll give you that. But that is one game. This is still a 6-6 team that has only three starters returning on defense.

I mean I guess this is an easy way to hedge your bets if you're ranking teams: if they beat Michigan (like they did last year) then you look like a genius for having them ranked so high. If they lose, well then as long as they showed up you still look pretty good, cause that was a top five team they had to play...

The Irish beat a (barely) ranked team, handily. But Georgia Tech worked Auburn - and they were ranked much higher than Pitt. Clemson took out A&M, a lot of experts' darkhorse pick for Big XII champ this season.

You simply can't know enough about this team after one game versus a Big East opponent with a brand new head coach (and a mostly new coaching staff) to justify catapulting them from nowhere to the middle of the top 25. Oh but wait, they're Notre Dame - justification is never necessary.

P.S. I'll probably have to eat my words when Michigan likely rolls out another lacklustre early season performance this coming week...

Won't be seeing Notre Dame in my rankings anytime soon. Crazy stuff.

Just so everyone know, I'm a huge Irish fan and have been my entire life. In fact, I moved to South Bend just so I can go to every home game, but I do not think they shoul be ranked in the top 25 yet. That was the season opener and they have a tough schedule. I predict them to be 8-3 and ranked in the top half of the top 2 by the end of the season, but to place them at 20 and 23 is uncalled for this early in the season. Personally, I feel Pitt was overrated and the only reason why the Irish are ranked is b/c they are playing Michigan and it will make Michigan look better if they beat a ranked team.

Sorry, it's supposed to say that they will be ranked in the top half of the top 25 by the end of the season, not the top 2. So, I think they will be ranked anywhere from 20-25 at the end of the season.

Sorry, I meant to write that ND will be ranked in the top half of the top 25, not top 2. I think they will be ranked anywhere from 20-25 by the end of the season. Just b/c they won one game, they still have a lot to prove to me before I would put them in the top 25 and I love the Irish.

Granted I did not participate this week, but I must know why Oklahoma had any points when TCU, the team that beat them, does not.

If indeed "Teams are ranked on likelyhood to beat lower ranked teams on a neutral field, rather than a forecast of final season rankings." shouldn't teams that beat another team on the losers field be ranked over that team?

I would like to here why Oklahoma is more deserving of a ranking than TCU.

Well, Oklahoma didn't make my ranking this week for that exact reason, Ben. (Slacker!) That said, if OU and TCU played again, I think I would still have to favor OU, despite my oft professed love of TCU over the past three years.

I just don't understand. Notre Dame isn't even in my Top 25 yet, and this is the Top 14! But I guess that's what makes polls fun, eh?

I know that this was written on September 7, but that just proves how out of his mind Pete Holiday is. First off he has Tennessee at 14. I am not goin to start on how stupid that is. He has Georgia at 5, Iowa at 6, and Michigan at 8. Well lets see Georgia came real close to getting beat by South Carolina, who should have won. Iowa got drummed by Iowa St. who isn't even ranked. And Michigan proved in their loss to Notre Dame just how bad their defense really is. And for Oklahoma to even be on your list is crazy. They have Adrian Peterson, thats it. And if you put 8 guys in the box you have beaten Oklahoma.
Tennessee didn't have the best showing in their first game either but come on. They atleast won. Something Michigan, Oklahoma, and Iowa can't say.

Where are the Minnesota Golden Gophers?

They have the best RB in the country in Laurence Maroney.

They beat Tulsa handily without playing starters for most of the second half (Oklahoma needed a great second-half performance from their "Heisman" candidate to eke out a win).

They absolutely dominated Colorado State--yet the AP has Colorado, and their last-second-field-goal win, ranked ahead of Minny.

With TWO All-American O-Linemen and the most electrifying runner in the nation (sorry Memphis fans), MN is a legitimate top-15 team.

    Go Gophers!
