If there was no Southern Cal...
In the words of Michael Buffer, "Let's get ready to rumble." College football is finally here and the sports world is taking notice. While the rest of the college football landscape is focused on who will be Southern Cal's Rose Bowl victim, I wanted to take a moment and look at the college football landscape sans USC.
If there was no Southern Cal... then give me Virginia Tech and Texas in the Rose Bowl for the national championship. There's a lot of jockeying at the very top of the standings, but Virginia Tech looks like a team that can repeat in the ACC and run the table. That means taking care of Miami & Boston College (both at home) and loading up on Florida State in the ACC title game. The rest of the season should fall into place nicely for the Hokies. For Texas, 2005 finally looks like the year they get over the hump. If Texas runs the table, I don't know who could make a better case than the Longhorns for the BCS. Wins over Ohio State (on the road), Oklahoma (neutral field), Texas Tech, and Texas A&M (on the road) is a daunting task, but Mack Brown's team finally looks up to it with a beefier defense and a more balanced offense than they are getting credit for in the preseason.
If there was no Southern Cal... then give me Tennessee RB Gerald Riggs for the Heisman. Overlooked in the preseason Heisman hype, Riggs ran for over 1100 yards last year while splitting time with Cedric Houston. Riggs may not be the front of mind pick that Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson is, but Riggs is the real deal. He plays when he's hurt (had a great game while suffering internal bleeding last year), he blocks, he catches the ball, he reads the blitz, and he may very well lead his team to the SEC title game.
If there was no Southern Cal... then give me Arizona State to win the Pac 10. QB Sam Keller has a lot of weapons and the Sun Devils defense should be even better with seven or so returning starters. Actually...I think Arizona State makes a run at the Pac 10 title this year, wiping out Southern Cal in the heat of the Arizona desert.
If there was no Southern Cal... I would want BoiFromTroy to blog for... UCLA. (Just kidding!)

BFT,
The home opener for Georgetown Football is Brown this weekend too. The new field is down but the stadium isn't built yet - temporary bleachers now.Blake said:

Josh, Kevin does mention FSU. VT is supposed to beat them in the ACC championship game? Although what he can't foresee is after Miami kicks FSU's ass in Doak, Boston College is going to bang on FSU at home. Once the Eagles figure out there as loaded as any, you'll see a Miami Vs. B.C. ACC championship. Kevin what happened to Washington and Booker though? No longer favorites huh?

BFT,
I have yet to do a Patriot recap post in the I-AA section but they won in OT. Something pretty weird happened at the end of regulation but I have to read more on it to figure out exactly how it went down. They beat Bucknell in OT.Cangelosi (the UNC transfer) started at QB.

And what's the deal - Where is the Florida State mention in there? Blake told me you were a Bowden ass-licker. Surely that would merit some sort of Drew Weatherford for Heisman mention, wouldn't it? I'm disappointed.
