Police question three UF players in shooting

Three players from the 2005 Florida Gators football team have been questioned by police after shots were fired into a Gainesville apartment last weekend.

A shot was fired from the hallway of an apartment complex into one of the units occupied by two women around midnight Saturday, said Sgt. Keith Kameg.

Later that night residents saw several men leaving the scene and carrying what they thought was a gun case, Kameg said. The men were identified as cornerback Dee Webb -- a junior who is heading to the NFL Draft -- receiver Andre Caldwell and cornerback Reggie Lewis.

Police later found an AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles as well as .38 caliber shell casing in Webb's apartment at the complex. The Gainesville PD later questioned Webb about the guns, and also found a .38-caliber revolver and a 12-gauge shotgun in an SUV driven by Caldwell.

Webb -- who sounds like the focus of the investigation -- is gone to the NFL, for all intents and purposes. The two remaining players seem to be just loosely associated, so its likely the Gators won't be hurt by this investigation.

An AK-47? What were they hunting for? You don't need anything that big to bag a BCS game.

Having the AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles is no major deal in FL, but Caldwell will get into trouble because of the .38 that was in his SUV. Unless he has a concealed weapons permit, having a concealed handgun is a felony, which due to the fact he is a UF player will probably get reduced to a misdemeaner. If the .38 is the same one that was fired in the apartment, then it will be a lot harder for Caldwell to plea down and he might get into some major trouble.

You have to wonder how stupid these players are to fire the gun inside in the first place and then not dispose of the casing.

I'm just can't stop laughin'. I just stand back and dig all the Florida blogs, which bounce back and forth, about who has the most criminals on their team - and now this. I can't wait to see what the Nole and Miami people are gonna fire back on this one. This is classic!

Another chance for Urban to show the nation that the gators actually do consider discipline and behavior off the field to be important.

Somehow, I doubt there will be another word about it in the Fla press. Such is the "Way of the SA in Gainesville" on such matters. Is there anything else but "looking the other way" at UF?

This of course can't be that 1% that Urban is always harping about??

    UPDATE:
Add Kenneth Tookes to the arrest report as well, he was the player who shot into the girls' apartment. Dee Webb was the legal owner of the guns involved.

This situation has me scratching my head and wondering what exactly is Coach Urbie texting to these players anyhow! I know he's trying to turn things around in gainesville, but I didn't think assault with a deadly weapon was in the mix. Good job on that so called top 1% of 1%! I think you need to add a few zero's to that equation.

Most states allow you to have a weapon in your vehicle without a permit. In the states that allow this, you can carry it to or from your vehicle from a residence (including a hotel room) without a concealed weapons permit.

If it was loose in the car or under the seat it might be different though since I know here at least - you have to keep it in your glove compartment or similar closed compartments.

This is so good it has to be fattening...

I can't wait to see the justification from the Florida faithful on this one. It seems that every time a Gator does something moronic, they find a way to say it was "ok" somehow. Somewhere we are going to see how this does not compare to FSU's issues, blah, blah, blah. I know you guys are calling Urban's arrival, "Urban Warfare," but these guys took that a little too far - don't you think?

So let's let the fun begin...

Correct me if I'm wrong but an AK-47 and AR-15 with modification are automtic weapons, which are illegal in every state. As a matter of fact unless you are in the military (like me) and or a HRT/SWAT or Police offical it's a federal crime to have these weapons in your possession.....Of course that doesn't mean they are illegal on the Florida Gators sidelines......

ND Fan, did I miss something? Who said anything about modifications? And even if they were modified, what kind of modifications were made (where did you get your military training)? A modification does not necessarily mean it was an illegal modification. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending anyone that is stupid enough to discharge a firearm in an apartment building, particularly a FL football player, but let's stick to the facts.

Notre Dame Fan 444...you are wrong about the guns being illegal. With the new looser restrictions on weapons, it is legal to own automatic weapons in FL. You can go to any arms dealer in the state to pick up an AK-47 or AR-15. The only automatic weapons that are illegal are the ones on the banned sale list that are the U.S. military grade weapons like the MP-5. To get an AK-47 you only need to have the money and be willing to wait 3 days unless you have a CWP in which case you don't need to wait. FL is a great state for gun rights!

    VTBobb,

An AK-47 is an Automatic Assault rifle, which is illegal in the states. An AR-15, made by Colt is the same as an M16A1 or M16A2 rifle the difference it that the AR-15 can only be switched from safe to semi-automatic, whereas the A1 and A2 can be switched from safe to semi to autoburst (which is a three round burst). Granted, I embelished the part about the AR-15 being modified. However the AK-47 is totally illegal. And all it takes is for a person to remove the firing mechanism from the M16A1/A2 and replace it with the with the one on the AR-15 and now you have a automatic weapon. This takes about 3 minutes to do..........it's simply a one for one swap. As for me, my military training comes from Fort Bragg, NC........currently I'm sitting here in Iraq waiting to come home in the summer and watch football.

I agree with Notre Dame Fan 444 and find it most disturbing the justification some are stating for owning and possessing these weapons while attending college????

"Having the AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles is no major deal in FL"????

Wow! What next carrying loaded firearms to class??? You never know when you might not like what grade the the professor gave you, and need to put some friendly persuasion the Prof's way to change it!!

Personally, JMO but I would have the ATF all over the Florida campus confiscating such things on the UF college campus. The last time I read college was for education not "war games"!

The most dismissive way the local police handled this situation is even more disturbing.

It's unfortunate how many people are ignorant about these types of things. Spurrier ran a clean program at UF and Zook came in with this Canes 'players coach, NFL mentality" UF does do things differently. Players do get in trouble when things happen off-field, less off-field infractions happen here(under Urban and Spurrier....not Pell or Zook) I've seen programs run the wrong way - Pell, zook and run the right way - Urban and SOS.

UF ranks second among public institutions in the U.S. for the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled and ranks fifth among all colleges and universities in the U.S. for the number of National Merit Scholars enrolled.

UF ranked first among public institutions in attracting National Achievement Scholars during 2002.

UF admitted 941 international baccalaureate students for the 2002-03 academic year, more than any other university in the world.

UF had the fourth-largest student enrollment of all U.S. universities in 2002 with more than 48,000 students from all 50 states and 100 foreign countries.

UF ranked in the top 10 among AAU public universities for the number of Fulbright Awards in 2001.

UF ranked third in degrees awarded to African American students in 2000-01 and fifth among AAU public universities in the number of Ph.D.s awarded to Latino students.

UF's 2002 Incoming Class has an average 3.92 GPA and 1300 SAT score.

UF's freshmen retention rate of 93 percent is among the highest in the U.S.

whereas we did have Jaburglar Gaffney - he lost his shcolly and had to pay his way back

fsu had Janikowsi bribe officers -who has kickers that get f'd up and bribe people?

Jared Jones and Dan Kendra blew themsleves up with Jared actually sneaking into girls dorms to steal food

Wyatt Sexton smoked crac....er, I mean had lime disease.

They had a dlineman who actually was in workrelease and practiced with them - Julian Thmas mebbe?

Peter Warrick and L coles had a field day at Dillards and Bowden said 'we are trying to get it down to a misdemeanor"

Ad Mcpherson took money from local car dealers and nothing happened to him until he gambled.

Not to mention all the players they pay to go to school there, the massive amount of academic fraud....hell, in Florida we hgave ther Deon Snaders rule about the percentage of class attendance you have to have.

don't get it twisted.....UF is heads and shoulders above shcools like FSU/UT/scUm and the like. we make mistakes but the players pay for their mistakes.

    Scum,
And how many Schollies and coaches have been fired due to a lack of institutional control under Bowden's watch by the NCAA?

"Hell Yes We Cheat" UF will always be a NCAA record breaker with UM a close second on such matters in the state of Florida with the NCAA.

Please explain how Gaffney paid for his mistake?
Did he somehow have a job? SOS was short of WR's due to two opting for the NFL so Gaffney was welcomed with open arms. Didn't even miss a game!!

As to Jano, Warrick, and the others you mentioned.. Minor stuff that would never make the paper in Gainesville... Even though Jano was already gone from FSU how did the courts rule on the Bribery etc?? Seems that was pretty stupid on the DA's part. 0-2 with SA..

And AD I notice he is in the NFL even though I do believe he did gamble the NFL didn't think much of it. Never would have been allowed.. Ever hear of Art Schlister? Or how about those two gator QB's that actually were proven to have gambled Kyle Morris and Shane Mathews how did that turn out?? How about Dupay? FSU can't hold a candle to UF on gambling stuff..

As to all the Bluster and blabber about academics what does that have to do with AK47's being fired by a bunch of stupid football players?

We all wait to see what Meyer will do. Personally, I am not real impressed with that 1% he keeps stating UF pursues??

You approve of players at Division One colleges walking to class and storing in the dorms assault rifles?? Please say it isn't so!

Silly me I thought student athletes (football players) were there to hopefully get an education while seeing if they have what it takes to make it to possibly the NFL.

At UF what next? gang warfare and defending their turf as well as giving the Profs fair warning about those grades they are receiving?
