Meyer: Guns are bad, mm'kay?
On the same day that Urban Meyer decided not to suspend LB Dustin Doe following his arrest stemming from an off-campus fight last weekend, Florida officials announced the indefinite suspension of OL Ronnie Matthew Wilson following his arrest on aggravated assault, simple battery and the use or display of concealed weapon during the commission of a felony.
"Obviously, this is a major concern," Meyer said. The victim, whose name was not released, said Wilson spit on him and slapped him on the right side of his face inside the XS nightclub. Wilson told police he had spit on the victim but denied hitting him.
When Wilson left the club, the victim followed him in his car and called police to give them vehicle information. According to a police report, Wilson pulled into a parking lot, where he took the rifle out of his trunk and fired one shot in the air because he wanted the other man "to know how it felt to be scared."
Fearing he would be shot, the victim ducked down and put his car into reverse. As he was going backward, he heard a gunshot, the report said.
Police said the victim left the parking lot and was followed by Wilson, who broke off the chase when he saw police cars.
According to the report, Wilson then went to an apartment complex and hid the rifle and magazine in his cousin's apartment, where they were recovered by police.
OK, first and foremost, this is just the latest "athlete with gun" story. Coaches have got to do a better job in cracking down on these behaviors before more players (and/or "civilians") get hurt or killed.
It appears that Meyer's standard for suspension this year is... did you use a gun when you got arrested? How else do you explain it?
Beating a guy & getting arrested? No suspension.
Spitting on a guy, firing off a semi-automatic, and getting arrested? Suspension.
Hey, at least we know they ground rules, right?
UPDATE: 4/9/2007
OL Ronnie Wilson faces expulsion from the University of Florida for possessing a gun on the UF campus. Gators head coach Urban Meyer said that his staff must work harder to keep players away from guns, according to the Tampa Tribune, and re-emphasized his ban on guns.
"We've just got to do a better job," Meyer said. "Obviously, we failed."

Uh, Kevin - Ronnie Wilson was charged with a felony and Dustin Doe was charged with a misdemeanor. Perhaps that is why Meyer suspended one and not the other?
In fact, Doe was one of many participants in a brawl, so it's a bit unfair of you to call this "beating a guy." Kind of like it was unfair of you to attribute the turf story - in any way - to Al Gore.

Well gatorhippy I'm not going to rip any school for having an off field incident (not violating NCAA rules, like the "Bush incident possibly) like this with behavior problems. Every school has had their bad apples whom got in trouble. For someone to bash a school for something like this is being hypocritical because every school has had something like this happen. Every major program at least.
The only issue I'd have if what Kev mentioned, Meyer doesnt seem to be applying the same set of rules to everyone. The punishments arent consistent. If one is suspended, they both should be.
Other than that there's not much else to say.

Sorry, can't agree. I'm not sure suspending a guy for fighting, and that's it, is worthy of any suspension. For what reason? You want to show that he went looking for it and chased someone down to start it, ok, suspension.
On the other hand, guns = bad. I'm sorry, guys, you're trying to make the two similar and they aren't even close.

I just read about the gun incident, and that kid deserves to be in jail. To try and intimidate someone by firing a rifle into the air? You are a football player! Try flexing. Its much safer than firing a eapon into the air...
As for the brawl, there were about twenty people involved, so he might have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time and ended up defending himself.

Not gonna bash the Gators on this one, but I will question Meyer's authority over this issue. So it's ok to beat someone down, get arrested and be seen at the next practice?
I think Meyer should call up Randy Shannon at UM! LOL... honestly, I don't think these kids should be packin' heat, especially student athletes. These kids are in the spot light every day, their every move will be watched, why do something stupid to f*ck up your future?
It happens at every program... some are just dealt with differently.

seminole nation.....i think its one thing to get into a fight w/ someone...i am no way condoning it..but, c'mon...fighting w/someone shouldn't be a reason for dismissal...
carrying a gun and firing it...is.....ronnie williams...how stupid can you be.....just freaking once..i'd like to see an athlete just walk away..get in his car...and just go home....
but, no......we live in a world where one person has to be tougher than the other..which usually someone ends up geting hurt seriously...this could of ended a lot worse....
what really kills me is that every athlete that comes to play in the state of florida, wether they play for the gators, hurricanes, or the seminoles, they should know that if they play well and keep their nose clean...they have a good chance of getting in the nfl....and they are told this by their parents, athletic directors, coaches, professors.....and yet...they just can't seem to stay out of trouble...
as gatorhippy stated...i guess it's open season on us gators...the haters are gonna come out of the woodwork..i won't mention any names (joe)...but i am sure some people will have fun with this....
and kev...they way you put it" beating a guy"...you make it sound like he beat some poor guy down with a stick or something....it was just a fight....and that is all it was......as for ronnie williams...good riddens....send him on down the road......

The difference in the R Wilson and D Doe cases are significant; Doe was involved in a brawl--that can that happen to anyone (hell, I've gotten tangled up in a few brawls in my time (in Tampa, G'ville, New Orleans, Miami...they just kinda' break out all of sudden, with little warning, and you've gotta' defend yourself)). Absent aggravating circumstances, merely being involved in a brawl shouldn't be grounds for suspension.
Ronnie Wilson in contrast, basically hunted a guy down to terrorize and intimidate him, with the use of firearm. If the facts are proven, forget suspension; he needs to be released completely (give his scholly to a more worthy student).
What is most concerning about the article however, is the appearence of a trend of Gator FB players getting into trouble; like an extension of the Zook era.
Meyer REALLY needs to get control of these kids, or his reputation will suffer. How kids act under a coaches' leadership and guidance, is generally a reflection of the coach. These kids are completely disrespecting coach Meyer when they act irresponsibly, allow themselves to get into trouble, and bring disrepute to the school (my alma mater, which therefore pisses me off on a personal lelvel) and the program.
NC buys you quite a bit of good will, but not complete immunity from scrutiny. Quite the contrary, in fact. Once you win, the scrutiny increases--and the program needs to be react accordingly, which entails players keeping a lower profile, the team affirmatively engaging in positive activities for the benefit of the community, focusing on academics and graduation rates, etc....concepts that Meyer seemed to grasp last year.
That said, I have every faith that Coach Meyer will regain control before the end of Spring; perhaps these two incidents will serve as the catalyst for regaining control.

most kids walk away from all sorts of negative invitations and distractions but its not likely that you will hear about it.
as an fsu fan i cant talk trash about problem athletes. but riots are difficult and each situation is unique but i would expect a football player to be able to escape a few blocks and tackles and make his way away from the scene.
this williams kid is a complete moron. no excuse for pulling a gun. he deserves a release.

Obviously a lot of these kids make very stupid choices and have poor decision making skills. To me, you dont need to have a weapon on you if you're living in America. People who carry weapons to me are insecure and are cowards.
Mix an insecure coward with bad decision making skills and guns - only bad can come of it.

http://www.alligator.org/pt2/070405passing.php
FSU and UF lost two lives. When it comes down to it, the rivalry between FSU and UF is nothing when it comes to what really matters in life.
Every school has parties. Every school has drinking. Every school has kids that make stupid decisions when they party. When some kids make mistakes and get in trouble, they get grounded, detention, or sometimes suspended from school a few days. Then there are kids that make a mistake and end up killing someone and spending part if not all of their life behind bars. Young people need to exercise better judgement when partying. Yes, winning a NC is a time to celebrate but do it with caution and care. The choices you make can affect and change forever the lives of people you've never met.
As far as justice goes, there's no such thing in this case. Will there ever be justice for Lt. Dahlem’s family? No. His kids will grow up forever without a father, his wife will forever be a widow. No type of justice can or will ease their pain or loss. For Mr. Austin John Wright, he gets 30 years in prision. He may have been a great kid, he may have got good grades, been a loyal friend, and even been a religious kid that helped in the community. His life changed forever in an instant. He made one really stupid mistake and a split second cost him 30 years of his life and a memory that will be with him forever. There's no excuse for driving drunk, he made the mistake and now he is facing the consenquences of his actions - for 30 years. He threw is own life away and the lives of complete strangers.
Personally, I'm not much of a party guy. I dont overly drink when I do and I certainly dont drive. I've seen the loss of too many lives and know life is a precious privilage, not a right. There's no reason to throw a life away over a few beers, it's stupid.
I salute Lt. Dahlem and police and firefighters everywhere. They are the TRUE heros of America. They are the ones who risk their lives everyday to protect and save ours, yet they get the smallest recognition. People hate seeing police, yet they own them their lives and dont even know it.
My thoughts and prayers will be with both families through this tragedy. God bless them both.

I have never been one who subscribes to the "bad apple" theory. I have to believe where the Gators are concerned, or any team for that matter, that team doesn't consist of Ron Wilsons. So, there'll be no Gator bashing here. As for Coach Meyer, I wasn't there; I didn't have all the details with which to face these kids and make a decision. So, I'll not judge the man.
Foolishness among athletes is nothing new. As I've said many times in other blogs, we're dealing with kids; young, immature, and inexperienced kids. That's no excuse for being stupid, but without the right guidance, what can we hope to expect? There are only three things that can help to impede it (There's nothing that can stop it all together.), good parenting, good coaching, and solid, courageous peer pressure from caring team-mates and friends. Ultimately, it's still up to the individual to do the right thing. If only they would learn from our mistakes, maybe we'd see less of this nonsense, instead of more. Thank God; as someone has already said, most of them walk away.
There's certainly nothing wrong with being competitive. This "questioning one's manhood" beef, is just a load of crap. One either is secure enough within themselves or they're not. Again, that can only be solved with help from family & friends. The rest is still up to the individual.
Finally, I'm not currently a member of the NRA. I do believe in the right to keep and bear arms. This is a most unique liberty to have, as we do in this great country; few others have anything like it. This is, however, more than just a god given right; it bears great responsibility; something Mr. Wilson is apparently lacking in. Would that he could see what many of my friends who've served this country have seen, each time a man fell when they pulled the trigger. Given he's committed a Felony, never more shall this right be his. What ever his sentence, let's hope he can learn from it and move on.

I am a bit concerned with some of the reports coming out of G'ville, but I believe the overall trend is still headed in the right direction.
Wilson is looking at expulsion. You can only do so much to prevent students from doing stupid things; the message communicated comes through how you deal with those stupid acts. Under Zook---very little punishment was doled out, in spite of so many notorious acts.
Under Coach Meyer--does the name Marcus Thomas ring familiar? He was One of the Gators' best defensive linemen--kicked off the team THIS YEAR--after the Tennessee game--for disciplinary reasons (internal; nothing extrinsic).

I dont want to get in a pissing match because NO program is flawless. To think ANY program is squeaky clean is foolishness. The incidents at FSU have been well documented. However, I dont recall a FSU player ever getting in trouble with a gun incident (UF and UM cant say that) and also I dont ever recall FSU being hit with NCAA sanctions (again, UF and UM cant say that). I'm not trying to say FSU is the cleanest program in America. I'm not even trying to say UF or UM are dirty programs. All I'm saying is your comment out UF being dragged DOWN to FSU's level (as if FSU is far below UF in that area) is complete bull sh!t. UF isnt an all-mighty clean program but I dont think they are an overly dirty program either - I do know they arent superior to FSU in terms of how its ran. Get real and get a clue Marko.

Florida State Seminole Prestigious History:
Florida State, one of the nation's top-ranked teams for its prowess on the field, retained its No.1 ranking on the Tarnished Twenty for the off-the-field antics of several of its players. One team member was recently arrested for battery after allegedly knocking his girlfriend to the ground, while another reportedly was caught offering to pay an undercover police officer $10 for sex.
Linebacker A. J. Nicholson was suspended from the team after a 19-year-old woman accused him of raping her at the hotel where Florida State is staying for the Orange Bowl.
Adrian McPherson was arrested on charges that he stole a blank check and received $3,500 when it was cashed.
Peter Warrick, who pleaded guilty on October 22nd to misdemeanor theft.
Warrick, once the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, was arrested with fellow wide receiver Laveranues Coles on October 7th in connection with a conspiracy to underpay for about $400 of designer-label clothing at a Dillard's department store in Tallahassee.
There was also 2000 graduate and Oakland Raiders' number one draft pick Sebastian Janikowski, who was reportedly picked up outside a Tallahassee night club with the date rape drug GHB. And let's not forget backup quarterback Marcus Outzen, who was charged with simple battery for reportedly fighting with his off-campus neighbors.

Tell me. Did I over estimate you when I referred to you as "men"? With all that's going on around us right now... It's funny how some listen all the time; some listen some of the time, and some just don't listen. If listening to me doesn't help, try listening to yourselves. Maybe then you'll realize just how silly you're being. A few idiots do not make a football team. Ergo, no one team can be labeled a gang of thugs, not righteously anyway. Time to move on.

# 59 Marko:
I've decided you're acting too foolish to deal with. I asked you a simple thing: Point out a gun charge. You couldnt. So instead you pointed out petty things mainly. I asked for a serious charge like a gun charge - you came up with accusations with little convictions. You point out things like "a 19-year-old woman accused him of raping her" lets point out the word ACCUSED. Ask the Duke Lacrosse team about accusations. NO charges were brought against Nicholson, to me HE was the victim like the Duke Lacrosse players, false accusations and thats it. Lets see... "allegedly knocking his girlfriend to the ground, while another reportedly was caught offering to pay an undercover police officer $10 for sex" so thats two different incidents, each with phrases like ALLEGEDLY and REPORTEDLY - funny how you cant/didnt mention convictions of anything. Oh wow, a conviction: "Peter Warrick, who pleaded guilty on October 22nd to misdemeanor theft" wtg marko! You listed a conviction - of a MISDEMEANOR.
I asked you to show me a serious charge and conviction, a GUN CHARGE and instead you threw out a bunch of crap. You choose to slander other people's name. Instead you completely dodge my original request because what I said is true.
Grow up Marko. When you're old enough to drive without a parent beside you get back to me. You showed you have nothing to argue and your allegations you've made about FSU being much worse then UF are false and wildly imagined.

Lack of gun charges doesnt make FSU a decent bunch of players. FSU has had a long history with criminals on their football team and Bowden doesnt care as long as he wins.
Florida(until recently) has been scandal free and their team has been upstanding citizens which reflected positively for their school. FSU...not so much. You can argue it all you want but the fact is that every non-FSU fan will agree with me.

Funny how FSU was #1 in the Tarnished Twenty poll for 3 years in a row. But I guess everyone in the nation is full of BS when it comes to FSU's history of thuggish ways.
Actually, I'm quite impressed that a FSU fan can read and write. Good job.
