Florida inks game with Toledo - fixed games optional

Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators have signed a home game to open the 2013 season with the Toledo Rockets of the MAC. The August 31, 2013 game will be played at the The Swamp.

For the Rockets, the UF game is a chance to recruit and take home a nice payday.

"This is a great opportunity for our football program to play against one of the best programs in the country," said Mr O'Brien. "Our players will be excited to play the Gators, and it's also a game that will create a lot of interest for our fans. We also look forward to gaining some exposure in Florida, which is a state where we have recruited student-athletes and hope to recruit more in the future."

For the Gators, Toledo represents a tune-up game prior to the September 7, 2013 matchup with the Miami Hurricanes.

I'd like to see a home and home with a Big 10/12 or Big East team sometime.

I'll go ahead now and put some money on Florida. I think that they will be everybit as good as Toledo.

However, it's hard to predict their caliber of play by then since Myer will be long gone.

Now before anybody goes and tries to stress the notion that, once again, Florida has done all they can to line up a soft non-con schedule: the strategy seems to be excellent!

I can understand why they might not want to give somebody like Pete Carroll an all expense paid recruiting trip to Florida (let alone the showcase on the field) and would rather let Toledo try and haul players out of Florida. But, the real beauty is that Florida gets to travel into Ohio and recruit there. There must be something that the Gators were pretty impressed with when they went up against Ohio State last year - and have decided to launch an all out recruiting blitz on the state of Ohio. Pure genius!

What exactly does "fixed games optional" mean?

Spartacus (#4), no one's ever accused Florida of scheduling tough OOC games. For whatever reason they get away with it.

Relax Ben - it's all a big conspiracy to recruit players away from the Buckeyes. That's what "fixed games optional" means. They're for sure gonna schedule a long running series that takes Florida up to Ohio every other year.

Didn't "gatorhippy" scoff at the idea of WVU and Colorado inking a home and home earlier in the year? Then Florida goes out and pulls this?

Man, would I love to have the rolling laughing emoticon right now.......priceless.

    Way to man up Florida

every team schedules at least one mid-major per year, and most schedule two

I agree with Spartacus about Fla recruiting in Ohio. I read an article recently about recruiting. They talked about what states current NFL players are from.
Ohio was 4th, behind Ca,Fl, and Tx. The difference is that in the other 3, the talent gets split between several schools.
In Fl, they go to Fla, FSU, Miami, and now SF.
In Tx, they have Tx, Tx Tech, A&M
In Ca, they have USC,UCLA,CAl,Stanford, etc
In Ohio, there is just OSU. Its smart business for Florida to come up to Ohio and try to grab some guys, particularly for the O-line. We've got a lot of pretty big corn fed boys up here. They aren't sprinters, but they can throw a pancake on you in a hurry.
If Florida does come up this way, I'll have to grab a couple of tickets, I've got family in Bowling Green. Could be pretty ugly, but I love watching the Gators play.

My sister lives in Bowling Green.

Great High school football here in Ohio. I know....I've played it & see it weekly. Ohio State has no Ohio college competiton for these kids.

    Go Canes...Get some recruits!!

#15: I'd have to go with Louisiana or possibly Pennsylvannia as next on the list. I think your top 4 is SPOT ON, though I might put California ahead of Texas (debatable).

Hey call Arkansas--they had four teams weaker than Toldedo on their schedule.

Houston Nutt and Frank Broyles and the experts at putting patsies on the schedule.

Look close at Arkansas' record?? and you will
see 6-3 but it should be 2-7 becuase of the 4 paid patsies.

MUCH of their ?Heisman Trophy yardage came from the FOUR PATSIES! Come one, play school yours
size or quit pretending to be a coach!

Make you you get this msg to Houst Nutt!
