FSU unveils all-black uniforms for BC game
Florida State and Nike have unveiled the all-black uniforms that the Seminoles will wear in next week's game against Boston College.
The uniforms, which pay homage to the Seminole Tribe of Florida, will be all black with garnet numbers and gold trimming, and feature the word "unconquered" on one pants leg and "Seminoles" on the other. The Nike design is based on the traditional colors of the Seminole Indian flag. The Seminole Tribe is often referred to as "the unconquered tribe", as they have never negotiated a formal peace treaty with the United States despite three wars.
According to Coach Bowden, FSU may wear this uniform on a very select basis for future games.
"I think the players will be excited about the uniforms," said head coach Bobby Bowden. "Players tend to like it when you do something different and they really do look nice. I like the fact that it pays direct tribute to the Seminole people. We intend to keep this a very special uniform and will not wear it more than once a season and may be not at all in some years."
FSU will also unveil a new sculpture on campus this weekend in honor of the Seminole Tribe.
"We are so proud to have this beautiful statue on our campus," said Wetherell. "It clearly conveys the tradition and the great spirit of the Seminole Tribe of Florida -- a spirit that stands as a model of courage for every member of the Florida State community."The life-sized, cast-bronze sculpture, called Seminole Family was designed and created by the artist team of Bradley Cooley and Bradley Cooley Jr. of Lamont, Florida. It depicts a typical family during the Seminole Wars of the 1830s. Under constant threat from the U.S. military, the family is concerned and watchful. As they make their way along their path, the father, carrying a rifle, guards his wife, young son, and infant child. The statue will be placed on the east side of the University Center and stadium.
UPDATE: The digital photo released by the FSU Sports Information Office (shown above) is a digital representation of the jersey prepared by Nike. According to the Sports Information Office, the jerseys themselves are a true black background, not a lighter shade as the image may represent at certain resolutions.

They look better than I expected, but they should have used a darker black. It looks like a cross between dark forest green and black in the picture on my screen. I think it is a great idea that FSU and Nike had to respect the Seminole tribe (and make extra money from the additional uniform sales). At least this year Nike made their extra uniforms better than last years with the one sleeve that was a different color.

Ugh those are UGLY...and then they base the new design as a tribute to the Seminole Tribe...yeah right! All FSU is doing is making a variation of their jersey to sell more jerseys. If anyone actually buys that this is a true tribute to the real Seminoles, then I guess a sucker is actually born every minute...

sorry, put me in the "hate it" column. ironic that Kevin thinks they look too green, as the whole concept reminds me of the green Notre Dame uniforms.
guess I'm too much of a traditionalist. not a big fan of the constant "new age" uniform changes (Oregon kills me). and the whole "special game" uniform just strikes me as a "maybe this will do the motivation job that I can't" ploy.

I think the jersey would look better with gold pants and garnet lettering. If the reason for the uni change is to pay homage to the Seminole Tribe, then maybe the the lettering on the pants should be more visible. Everything just kind of blends together with all black.

The Unconquered pant stripe is just awesome. That's what does it for me. Honestly I don't see the harm in it. It's not like ND. These are a one time special dedication to the Seminole tribe of Florida. I doubt they will even sell these. After all, why would you wear a black jersy to any other game? I am a traditionalist as well. I love the Garnet and gold tried and true and the all white away jersys. But this doesn't bother me. It's kinda neat one time.

I think they look pretty sharp, especially if in the future FSU pairs them with the garnet pants. I also hope they don't wear them all that often. Once a year is more than enough.

#16 Clemson - I think that is a grevious insult to the gamecocks. They play thier best, while FSU plays quite near the worst they can most games. Gamecocks have a good coach, FSU does not. Fire Both Bowdens now! I don't care if Bobby built the program, that doesn't give him the right to flush it now.

I guess we'll have to do whatever it takes to keep the do-gooders at the NCAA from telling us we can't be Seminoles... Besides, the uniforms look better than the jail-house stuff the 'Canes wear... er... SHOULD BE WEARING!!!

Great idea! But, I think it would aply fit the next Pro Football team that ends up in Los Angeles. We should call the "The Convicts" and issue them those black and white striped uniforms like those that they used to wear in prison. We can't go with the "Orange Jumpsuit" thing because we already have Oregon State, Oregon and California out here on the West Coast. There's only so much non-sense that even we can take. But, the "Prison Garb" idea is excellent. I'm gonna try and sell it to Villaragosa as soon as possible.

They picked this game because of the extreme similarities between FSU and BC uniforms. Plus I have seen plenty of back jerseys on sale and people wearing them in stores and at games. So I think the accussation of using this to sell more jerseys isn't true. Maybe to sell more black over the garnet and white. Oh and you can also buy gold jerseys so maybe one day we'll see FSU in gold jerseys.
Now if Nike will just fix the terrible job they do of the Seminole logo on the side of the pants.Eric Linehan said:

For someone who is an FSU Alumni and also former employee of the Undergraduate admissions office, the relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe goes back 50plus years, from the point that FSU stopped being a women's college. Everything the athletic programs and university does to portray the seminole tribe is approved by seminole tribe officials, from Chief Osceola's outfit to Renegade and the Spear. Yes, FSU does make money during football season and Nike is its parent apparel sponsor, but when was the last time there was such a displayed historical connection/ tribute between a university and its mascot? Thanks.

Todays's Column by Orlando Sentinel's Mike Bianchi:
Gotta agree with Mikey...
If I was a member of the Seminole Tribe, I'd be calling the NCAA to revoke my endorsement of FSU's use of the Seminole name as a mascot...
This is a very poorly coached football team with average players...
It's sad and almost hard for me to laugh at...
Almost...

I am absolutely disgusted that we are sticking with Jeff and Drew. It's time for a change. Hell, if we're going to keep Jeff at least play Xavier. He can run and throw. Surely he's not that much worse than Weatherford. The sad thing is that not changing when changes are needed will scare great players away from the program. Who wants to play were even though it is as bad as it gets you won't play because they already have a guy? We deserve to lose them all.

The majority of you people that are commenting have serious problems. If you are a true nole' fan win or lose you would stick by them.Really get your shit together, so what we're having a bad season it's alot of talent on the team and great coaches all we need to do is pull it together.

Wake up. How many bad seasons are you allowed to have before you can be pissed. You have to be Jeff Bowden. You think talent will want to come here when it has gotten progressively worse since he has been coordinator? You gives a shit how much talent you have when you aren't ranked and are damn near the worse in the conference. Either the talent is not as good as you think or we don't know how to use that talent effectively. Tennessee just had the same problem a year ago, fired the coordinator and now look. I am a die hard and expect the best. I am a die hard Kentucky basketball fan and also expect the best. If you are satisfied with not playing for championships, why play?

I don't care about the jerseys. I care that we all of the sudden suck and are losing to everybody in the ACC. Yeah, Jeff's gotta go, but if it means Bobby leaving, then forget it. Bobby Bowden can leave when and how he wants. By the way, a lot of those guys on that defense and o-line could have stayed. I guarantee that if they had, we'd be pretty damn good. The only time we get motivated is when we play Miami. Wake up Florida State, and play like Noles.

I love the new Uniforms! They are the best in the NCAA! I hate when people call them ugly cause it looks different, that kills me! The unconquered stripe is off the damn chain!! They should wear them more often! I love the Oregon uni's too cause they are the only ones trying to do something instead of the old boring outfits! Clemson dont get mad cause you have to wear that gay ass purple!
