FSU outsourcing band... again

Word out of Tallahassee is that Florida State is outsourcing the band for the Emerald Bowl... again. The Seminoles cheaped out earlier in the year and hired the North Carolina Central band to do the Warchant for the NC State game. (NCCU did an awesome job, btw!!!)

Unapologetic about the Chiefs not being bound for San Francisco, Wetherell said he isn't going either. No FSU-paid trustees' trips to the game, and only Lee Hinkle, who heads university relations, will represent FSU's administration.

"I'll watch it on TV like everyone else. It's kind of making a statement," Wetherell said. Asked if he'll be criticized for not standing by the team, he said, "If you go, you're damned if you do. If you don't, you're damned too."

Since FSU doesn't want to cough up the $750K to send the Marching Cheifs to San Francisco, the Seminoles will likely be backed by an alumni pep-squad, if anything, to play the Warchant.

The band is already riled up on the message boards about this. This is simply a financial decision.

Let's hire florida, but they have to wear garnet and gold, none of that tacky ass orange and blue crap. They will still have almost a week to prepare for the championship. Maybe we could just borrow Tim Tebow. We will trade Lee and maybe with some proper coaching that 5 star recruit will actually end up being a football player some day. I don't think we should send the band. As the school that has had the most BCS bowl games (6), the athletics program is not generating money. And while the defense played ok this year that offense... no matter the coach, appeared to have given up in the Wake Forest game.... like they didn't even care. They don't deserve the band. Maybe the band deserves the trip, but bowl games are about football. Bowl games, not suprisingly, have little to do with bands. If they get to go good for them. And Gatorhippy is right, we need to save money to pay that worthless sack-o-crap jeff bowden his friggin stipend. Honestly though, we were paying him for nothing before as well, basically all that was accomplished is he doesn't get the free box seat every saturday and maybe someone vaugly competent will wear the headset now...

this is the freakin emerald bowl for cripes sake, who cares, and it looks like FSU doesn't care either so why should anyone else.

Neither of these teams belongs in a bowl and thats what this has come down too... too many crappy bowls that even the schools involved don't care about

Why did FSU even accept a bid to go to a bowl game? At 6-6 they dont deserve it and should just stay home. I hope they get stomped on. Beat so bad that Bobby waves goodbye and quits at the post-game press conference.

Hell, I'll play the bass drum for them. And I'll do it just for the airfare out there. How hard can it be? Two notes? DUM dum dum dum, DUM dum dum dum, (chant at same time: Whoa-whoa-whoawhoa whoa whoa whoa. Repeat. )

I noticed this year that for two of our home games that LSU and Arkansas brought smaller versions of their bands, probably as a cost-cutting measure. I kinda like it when visiting teams bring the whole band. College football just wouldn't be the same without full opposing bands.

Too bad you're not coming to The Emerald Bowl, it's in a great Facility (Phone Company Park) and it's in Downtown San Francisco, should be a great time.

I hope to get back in time from vacation to drive up for the last 3 quarters. Should be an interesting game as well...and if it's not, there's plenty to do within walking distance of the field.

Any Bruins or 'Noles that are coming to the game, be sure to stop by the Buena Vista Cafe on Hyde St down by the wharf and order the Irish Coffee. You won't be disappointed.

The real news in this story is that it costs $750k to take a band to a bowl game. SF is an expensive city but that does not sound right to me. I would think you could do it for less than $150k.

Firstly -FSU was a girl's school and it also spent time as a seminary in it's more then 150 years of existance. It was a men's only seminary first though. What does that have to do with anything? Orange and Blue will not stop being a gaudy combination because FSU once admitted only males, then only females... and now both.

The other gator fan who made the bowden crack... I was insulting baby bowden and refering to Lee I think you thought I was refering to Tebow.

Think about costs for the bowl the band at FSU has some 300+ members. Plane tickets alone would be more then 150k.

The article says 400+ member band... lord almighty if Volstrike is the kinda travel agent that can fly 400 people out to SF and give them room and board for less then $375 a head.... Then he is the greatest travel agent ever! Even if those are bottom end accomodations that is awesome awesome work. It is about $1875 a player for a few days room and board as well as airfare (they actually bus band members, even while flying players, if it is close enough but that is certainly NOT). What is the payout for this bowl? I can't imagine much over 1 million.

These little embarrassing things that we view as irrelevant, could be the turning point for a recruit that sees a top notch school vs. a school falling apart under poor leadership.

Swallow the loss and put on professional show if you are going to accept the bid. Do not out-source our band on national TV (2x) during the same year, making a MOCKERY of the university...

Sorry Miami and FSU fans your not the power houses you once were. This league will not be dominated by one team anymore. At least not in our lifetimes. FSU stop pouting, take it on the chin, go to your crappy bowl that you deserve, and let the kids have fun!!!

When I went to FSU, they not only took the marching band to bowl games but they also brought about 30 non-marching chief musicians from the school of music to play in a concert for the alumni a couple of days prior to the game. We each recieved travel, a nice hotel room, about $30/day in per diem, and A TICKET TO THE GAME (to watch as a spectator, not to play) and only had to commit a few hours towards the concert. I heard that was now cut too. Of course, these were for big BCS games that were nearby, Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl. I think they actually flew the band out for the fiesta bowl national championship game against Tennessee though. I wonder what would happen if we played in a far away BCS game in the near future. I think they would definitely send the band for that. These consellation bowls just aren't a big enough deal. It really comes down to the money. After all, isn't college football all about business these days.

P.S. I hope the Gators lose big. Each year I think that I can live in harmony with UF, but then I go to the game and remember how obnoxious some of their fans are. The Noles might be down now, but name one program that never slumped. Please don't forget, the Noles have won more conference titles, and national titles than UF in almost half the time. I hope that remains after Jan. 8.
