Spurrier on Richt: How I would deal with the celebration

Senator Blutarsky has the clip of Steve Spurrier responding to questions about Georiga's pre-scripted celebration following their first score in the win over Florida.

Spurrier says he would have sent a scrub onto the field to start a fight.

Spurrier says he would have turned the situation to his advantage.

"I think if (Florida coach) Urban Meyer had known they were going to do it, send out one of his third team guys and get in a wrestling match with the guys, get a fight started, so all those guys on the field leave the bench in a fight," Spurrier suggested.

"I think that's what we'd do. If the other team ever does that, get one of your down the line guys that's not going to play to get out there and start wrestling with the guys. Now you've got a fight and they're all out the next week."

"Georgia would have been in trouble if a fight broke out, deep trouble for the game this week," he says.

You gotta give Spurrier credit - that's evil genius talk, right there.

if spurrier really wanted to test how good of a coach he can be.....i'd say go ahead......but it is hard to play golf in late december in michigan.........although i played "spruce rigde" and "hampshire" each twice last year in december......

    to be honest......10% at best.....

    go gators...and hokies

#8 WEA. Oh yeah I'm sure he'll buy a new plastic sticker for it next year. Hell, He will probably keep a fresh coat of wax on that tag and drive it around the rest of his life. That number is his as long as he pays the extra $25. Not sad that Appalachian doesn't play michigan next year. The scholarship disadvantage makes the feat "impossible". Not to mention that Appalachian beating michigan a second time would cheapen the memory of an "impossible" victory.
    #9 RJ.
LOL. When we do get to the NC, all you "decent fans" are welcome to root for the Gamecocks with the status of "HONORARY COCK". If you don't like that, then you can be a "DECENT COCK".

I'll admit, if someone did that to OSU I would be pissed. But it was Florida. LOL

START A FIGHT!!! Gee, why didn't I think of that? By God, there's nothing like spreading a little sportsmanship on the field……with your opponents' bodies.

Hey Gator Mates, guess what's coming. Spurier doesn't just want to excessively celebrate in your EZ, should they score. They want a brawl with ya. I can just see the headlines now: "Cocks Stand Up To Gators." That should sell some newspapers.

To think, everybody has been saying it's been Miami all this time. It's been Mr. WWA-F all this time.

Will somebody in Cocks Land please expose some hidden cojones and show this idiot the door? Bad enough he wants to lower SC's standards. Now he wants to incite riots. Enough is Enough!!! Tell the jerk to find some place else to coach.

Not at all, UofSC'78 (Post 15), I'd just as soon he retire, given his idea as to how to "handle" this situation. Besides, in my opinion, he hasn't done SC anymore good than Holtz or Carlon.

By the way, I'm a Mountaineer, tried and true. I wouldn't want them to trade Rich Rod for anyone, let alone Spurier. Not to mention, as good as Meyer has been for FL, I can't imagine them trading him off either.

Well then Zac, Mr. Spurrier understands humor and uses it often as a lot of us attempt to do. His off the cuff tongue-in-cheek remark has prompted a lot of taken out of context feedback. The man is a Heisman trophy winner and a member of the Hall of Fame for his athletic greatness as quarterback at Florida. His record as a college football coach speaks for itself. As far as I know, he has no criminal record. Wiki the man. He could have sat back and waited for the perfect college coaching situation and run his record up. Instead, he accepted a real challenge. A major program with all of the resources, and a real history of non-excellence in football. When he succeeds in Columbia, he will have overcome an almost institutionalized acceptance of the average. Good luck with those Mountaineers, too bad you don't have the ole ball coach.
As per your opinion. Not relevant. We beat Tenn at Tenn last year, 1st time ever. That's worth a 5 year contract extension all by itself. We see improvement year to year and something that raises the bar each season, so far. Hell fire Zac, if the man consistently gives us what he has given us so far, that is better than we have ever had.
So, burn a few sofa's or whatever it is ya'll do up there. If your goal in life is overall happiness, I suggest your team avoid THE FIGHTING GAMECOCKS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

UofSC'78, I'll begin with my appreciation of you're being one who remembers when things weren't so rosy. I too remember leaner times. I even remember your Game Cocks breaking a bowl game loosing streak at the expense of my Mountaineers. Though a loss, it was a good game none the less, and a well earned win for your boys.

That having been said, there's nothing in the article that suggests or even implies that Mr. Spurier was making his comments "…tongue-in-cheek." However, in all fairness, I wasn't there to witness the quote. For all any of us know, it may not have even happened. It could be nothing more than the media stoking the fires for a big story, especially given SC plays FL in a couple of weeks.

As for Spurier's accomplishments, as a player or a coach, I don't know that anyone ever questioned them. I know I didn't. That's no excuse for taking a fine institution and suggesting that they lower their standards in the name of better football. (I'm referring to an early article, where-by Spurier allegedly requested SC to lower its admission standards or he'd quit.) I didn't understand that any more than I understand this.

By comparison, if Rich Rodriguez and his coaching staff can attract the talent they have and do what they've done, with much less I might add, certainly the great Mr. Spurier and his staff can do more at SC, without lowering admission standards. If nothing else, there are a great many more advantages to, and attractions within, that part of the country than up-state WV.

Suffice it to say, I'm disappointed in some of what I've read regarding Mr. Spurier, and have made my irrelevant opinion known. If my opinion is so irrelevant, why are you so bent upon defending against it? That's not an objection, mind you. I'm just asking the question.

Despite the reason, best of luck to you and yours. What ever all of this means, it is my sincere wish that it works out for the best, not just for Mr. Spurier, but for all of SC's fandom.

    Zac/#13:

"...START A FIGHT!!! Gee, why didn't I think of that? By God, there's nothing like spreading a little sportsmanship on the field……with your opponents' bodies..."

You must be new to the ways of the OBC.

No, Spurrier wouldn't actually follow through with his diabolical little plan; he's simply publishing the suggestion as a shot accross the bow of any team that might consider employing such tactics (as UGA did against UF) against his team (i.e.-- he's bluffing).

Recall Darnell Dockett twisting Earnest Graham's knee after play in '01? How about FSU hitting Wuerfel late numerous times in 96?

There were a few other occasions where Spurrier could have retaliated as suggested above, though he refrained, opting instead for simply stating his case in the public arena (those 2 stick out in my mind like car accidents).

The ol' ball coach is a lot of things; he ain't into cheap or dirty.

    GO GATORS!!

I was beginning to wonder when we might hear from some Gator Mates on this issue. Not to mention a fellow Mountaineer. Diggs, where ya been?

As I've said, in all fairness, I wasn't there. I don't know from what context the quote was taken. I don't even know the man as a human being. All I know are the accomplishments, and what's been written here as well as elsewhere. And, again in fairness, even I have said you can't believe everything you read.

So, as we've all suggested to each other at one time or another, when a player allegedly had gotten into trouble, I'll take a step back and look at this from a different point of view (UofSC'78's for example), and give the man a chance.

While I did over-react a bit in my 3rd paragraph of lucky Post 13, I do maintain great coaches are not Gods. They're as human as the rest of us, prone to the same mistakes. The better ones, such as Steve Spurier, are paid a great deal to accomplish great things with an institution's football program. Perhaps, in some cases, we expect too much. I can't help not liking a coach telling his employer, "It's my way or the highway." Not to mention, being in his position (that dreaded national spotlight), I would think he'd be more careful when making suggestions, such as in the article above, and being certain it was taken in jest. That's just my take. My sincere apologies if I offended anyone.

OK, Ok sorry Zac. Of course your opinion is as relevant as everyone else's. Without opinions, this site would not exist. I do not personally know the OBC either. My impression of him from interviews and TV viewings is that he likes a joke as much if not more than the next guy.
I thought we settled that thing about standards. All he asked is that his recruits be held to the same NCAA standard that most other schools use. A level playing field is not so much to ask for, (he got it by the way).

Spurrier would take off his visor and try to beat the hell out of some of the players with it.

He can't even control his temper with his own team so he should get in the middle of the fray and start thumpin' heads. Of course if you wear a visor you're not gonna' rumble with anybody.
