Georgia to don black jerseys for Auburn?

There is a persistent rumor that the Georgia Bulldogs may wear black jerseys for the upcoming game with Auburn. Nike has produced a black retail jersey for UGA fans, but it's unclear at this point if Georgia has ever ordered black jerseys for the team.

Georgia coach Mark Richt spoke about the possibility of the black jerseys during his call in show, according to Georgia Sports Blog.

Richt said that the seniors came to him and asked him to ask the fans to wear black on Saturday. The seniors want to have a blackout game.

On the call in show, Richt said that you can't just decide at the last minute that you want a team full of black jerseys. He also said there was no symbolism behind it. It's just a solidarity thing, and the players requested it.

The reason this works, in my opinion, is that Georgia has generally included black in most their uniform designs, so bringing out a black jersey isn't out of character. I love the traditional Georgia home uniform, but I can understand if the players want to make a change to support their seniors.

I think they'll end up looking like JV team (or the Oakland Raiders) in black jerseys over silver pants... but I digress.

UPDATE

Paul Westerdawg posted a photoshop of what the Georgia team would look like in black jerseys. Check it out.

I think it'd make them look more intimidating..

and think about the atmosphere. A whole stadium decked out in black. That would look great.

I heard Richt on his call-in show last night. The players want to unite under these black uniforms, they're just unsure what they're going to unite about. How about a loss to Auburn? That's always a good choice in Sanford Stadium. At least it's the usual one.

Auburn is 17-7 inside the friendly confines of Sanford since the series moved to a home and home in 1959.

Hey my fellow bloggers...Black jerseys are not going to put fear in an opposing team, good play is! I have no problem with it since black is in Georgia's official colors. I do wish they would return to white pants for home games and red pants for road games!

#1: HT, Actually, the AJC published a study a few years ago noting that teams in all sports wearing red uniforms have a slight statistical edge over all other colors. The theory is that humans have an anthropological reation to the color red when in battle situations as red is the color of blood. I don't know about the theory, but the statistics appeared correct - the edge goes to red!

Glad to hear that Richt is looking for ways to motivate his team that are within the rules.

If I were the coach I would dress GA in road uniforms and force Auburn out of the white. They have been very strong in their road uniforms this season. Actually I really don't think that colors will matter.

If playing at home is worth 7 points Auburn needs to play some catch up right now. Just hope that it's a good, entertaining game.

Why the fascination with changing up uniforms? Too much time on their hands?

If I'm Richt and my Senior Leadership comes to me with fashion requests, I'm asking Dubbaya-Tee-Eff they're asking about clothes for when there's a Football Game on Saturday they're obviously not focused on.

Dawgfan (#6) - - I won't say that you'll struggle to put 7 points on us, but the numbers don't lie, Auburn's defense is #1 in the SEC for scoring defense, only giving up 14.5 points a game and #2 in rushing defense, only giving up 113 yards a game. You won't be scoring 25+ points come this Saturday, it's going to be a good ole fashioned, low scoring, great defense type of game. It'll be your running game against ours. And I will say, Knowshon is one hell of a back...hope we just keep him around 100 yards.

Dawgfan: I didn't say anything about how many points Georgia will score. I said that Auburn's record in Sanford stadium since the series went to a home and home in 1959 is 17-7. That's 17 wins out of 24 tries, or 71%. that's probably slightly better than Georgia's own record in there against SEC opponents.

I knoshon will only rush for about 40 yards.

OU Ron: No, not me. I'm not a betting man. Besides, there are no big Georgia fans on here worth betting. I get the satisfaction from winning from my ENTIRE family, who are all Dawg fans.

Stafford and the receiving corp are hot. The O Line has come together great and Knowshown is becoming a premier back. I say he goes for 40 yards also, in the 1st quarter alone my friend. No doubt you will score some points, but not enough, not enough.

So, if it worded then- why wouldn’t it work now against auburn. I’d love GA to whoop AU’s @ss. Dawgfan: I think we can stop Moreno. We did stop McFadden and Jones, so anything besides them is a piece of cake. He could run wild, though. You never know. Should be a good game, although Auburn is only getting one point. I think it'll be a pick 'em by Friday. Then you couldn't call it an upset if the #17 team beat the #10 team on their turf.

@Ga Boy#31-How can you say that anybody from the Georgia team is hot right now? What was the spread aginst Troy again? And how close was the game?...Cant remember the score but I know that it was too close for comfort. But I will agree with you about yalls back, hes pretty bad.

Cowbell05 (#40) - The spread was 16 or 17 I believe and UGA had it covered until Troy started calling time outs and trying to score w/ less than 30 seconds left down by 17. It wasn't too close for comfort. UGA was up 44-27 w/ one minute to go against a team that has received top 25 votes. And the reason he says someone from UGA is hot right now is because their running back has around 500 yards in the last 3 games and Stafford has something like 10 or 11 touchdowns in the last few games. The offense has almost 1000 yards and has put up 86 points in the last 2 games. And dont come back w/ anything about UF's defense being down and Troy being a pushover b/c AU had to score late to secure the games against a winless in conference Ole Miss team this past weekend that UGA had 300 yards rushing against and put up almost 40 points on.

yes, we lost to USC but you must take into account that we only lost by a mere 4 points and didn't even score a touchdown...that, in itself, is an embarrassment to both UGA and USC...we're not a no-scoring team and USC should have obliterrated us but apparently they're not good enough either...

The jerseys would possibly give the dawgs an extra edge in game but all that matters is getting the blocks down field. Auburns defense in one of the best right now in the SEC. If Georgia can block the d-line and keep stafford and co. protected I do believe that the the Dawgs can win this one. I do believe that Cox will end up throwing to many interceptions which the Georgia defense will capitalize on each time. Georgia will look sick and bad a** is black and if the fans pull it off it would be one of the coolest things that Georgia has ever done.

If my memory serves me I think it goes something like this:
The DAWGS were wearing silver britches in the late 50s and early 60s. When Vince Dooley arrived there in '64 he did away with those and went to the white or gray. In 1980, Hershel's freshman season, the DAWGS opened the season at Tennessee and wore the maroon red pants which was a big deal. You may remember the play when Hershal ran straight over Bill Bates (eventual Dallas Cowboy great DB) with the maroon pants on.
The next game was at home against Texas A&M and everyone was hyped about the freshman Hershel Walker. Larry Munson calling the pre game said the Dawgs are back out in their "silver britches". It stuck, they wore them at home that season and won the National Championship in them.
I think that was when they got popular again, or that could just be a story one of my drunk friends in Athens told me. Sounded good to me though. GO DAWGS!!
