Gailey sounds resigned in interview

Georgia Tech football coach Chan Gailey sat down with The Charlotte Observer to discuss the 2005 football season. When asked about his contract status, Gailey was less than enthusiastic about an extension:

Q. How many games do you think you have to win to get an extension on your contract that expires in 2006?
"Either it's good enough, or it's not good enough. I don't care what (the number) is. I'm going to do the best I can do. You have to decide at some point in coaching what is your priority. The thing is I want to do better. Our coaches and our players will do the very best that we can. Whatever that is, they'll decide. You have to decide at some point in coaching, `What is your priority?' Is your priority to keep your job or is your priority to do what's right? We're trying to do what's right by the program, what's right by the kids, what's right by the coaches. And then whatever happens, happens."

I BELIEVE THAT CHAN GAILEY WILL DIRECT THE PROGRAM AT GA TECH BACK THE TOP TIER OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL. BECAUSE OF HIS HEALTH, IT MAY BE AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. BECAUSE OF THE MOMENTUM OF BEING ON TOP FOR MANY YEARS, I DON'T THINK THAT YOU CAN TURN A PROGRAM AROUND IN FEWER THAT 12 YEARS.

LOOK AT NEBRASKA. RECENTLY THEY LOST TO CSF, BUT THEY STILL CAN TAKE HIGHSCHOOL FOOTBALLERS AWAY FROM 90% OF THE COLLEGES.

12 years??? Yikes. In today's college football environment, you don't get 12 years. You get 3 or 4. 5 if you're lucky.

    FRANCIS-

Chan Gailey STOLE MY STUDENT FEES muddling up the Tech football program. He's a CRAP COACH with a career record around .500. He cannot turn the program around because HE'S THE ONE who led it into mediocrity. He's been successful ONCE at the II-A level and fuddled along EVER SINCE.

There's NO EVIDENCE to support A SINGLE THING you wrote. There's plenty to suggest that Gailey is MEDIOCRE. Which is why we have no problem saying GAILEY SUCKS AND IS THE WORST COACH IN THE ACC.

PLEASE FIRE CHAN GAILEY before he completely destroys GT Football. He is the worst Coach in College football. Not only is his play calling terrible, but his players are the least motivated GT team I have seen in a decade.

I was so upset that Tech lost to UVA. I am so tired of hearing the ESPN commentators say things like......well you know Georgia Tech beats teams they shouldn't and loses to teams they shouldn't. NCSTATE and UVA were terrible losses that will now give Tech a 6-5 season. Tech is not a 6-5 team. This year, Georgia Tech should have been 8-3. If Tech could go 8-3 consistently, I could live with that. Those 2 losses are huge. I don't know that I can blame Chan Gailey. I am just tired of being a mediocre team. When will GaTech athletics realize that we don't need to settle for this? It is not good enough.

Never ceases to amaze me how the whiners and armchair coaches come out of the shadows when GT struggles in athletics...I wonder why anyone and everyone who is INSIDE the football world thinks Gailey is an incredible coach?...yet the morons who watch while drinking beer and scratching themselves think they know better...the last time I checked...interceptions inside the red zone...and blown coverages on defense...were PLAYER mistakes...Chan Gailey and every other coach at the upper teer institutions of learning have to play with the hand that's dealt them...the rest of you play what?...video games!...right?

    Tim:

You're missing a big point. Chan Gailey's record is completely mediocre and knowing your players strengths and weaknesses is his job. Calling pass plays with Ball at QB inside the Red Zone under pressure, when you're running game is working and you have enough time on clock (i.e. GA Game) is terrible.

People inside football don't think he's great and Tech fans know when they've got a good coach and when they don't - you don't have to be a genius to call plays in College football.

Plus he's let the team lose focus of college athletics with his lack of discipline. Their attitude between GA game and Emerald Bowl created one of the biggest embarassments in college football - the same thing happened a few years ago against Fresno. (I was actually glad they got beat because of their attitude.)

It's time for a new coach who will instill teamwork into the kids and quit playing into todays thug sports mentality (someone more like Notre Dame's coach, for example!)

    Tim Sexton:

I was a big defender of Chan Gailey. Heck, I defend Karl Dorrell! Sure, the schedule has gotten tougher, and Gailey has done what his overrated predecessor never did and gotten top talent into Atlanta and beaten some top - ranked teams whereas George O'Leary's claim to fame was "almost beating FSU" year after year. But still, the guy inherited a winning, disciplined program. The bottom line is that he is winning fewer games than his predecessor, and his players seem to lose focus on the field and off it. In his first off - season, he had a scandal where a bunch of players flunked out (something that Georgia Tech, unlike most southern schools, actually takes seriously). And last off - season, you had a bunch of run - ins with the law. This season, they beat Miami and Auburn, almost beat UGA, but lose to 6 - 5 UVA, 6 - 5 North Carolina State, and get killed 51 - 7 by Virginia Tech, and then get killed 38 - 10 by Utah, allowing 212 passing yards to one WR?

At first I passed off the griping over Gailey - which has gone on since the day he was hired - as rantings by disappointed fans who significantly overrated O'Leary's accomplishments and somehow thought that they should be able to hire a big name coach even though they are not a big name school. But that Utah lost pretty much confirmed what Gailey bashers have been saying for 3 years. It is now year 4 and Gailey has all of his players in. He has actually done a pretty good job recruiting and now has the 3rd or 4th most talented team in the ACC after Miami, FSU, and Virginia Tech. There will be no excuses for more bad losses like the ones to Utah, NC State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. If next year is like this one, Tech can and should do better.
