Chan Gailey fired at Georgia Tech

Multiple sources are reporting that Chan Gailey has been fired at Georgia Tech.

Gailey met with Tech AD Dan Radakovich this morning and was told that he would not be retained. The school has scheduled a 2 p.m news conference to announce the firing.

Gailey had a 44-32 record at Georgia Tech, including an 0-6 mark against the Georgia Bulldogs. The Yellow Jackets went to a bowl game every year under Gailey, but it's unclear if he will be coaching them in this year's bowl or not.

I speculated this week that Gailey might be the best option at Tech, but it appears that the Yellow Jacket brass think otherwise. (Heh.)

Reports say that Terry Bowden, Paul Johnson, and Jim Grobe will be considered among other candidates, including East Carolina's Skip Holtz.

UPDATE

ESPN has now posted that Gailey will be fired.

HT: ATL and Jeff Quinton

This move is so many years overdue. Good for Tech.

If they get Terry Bowden that would add a very interesting dynamic to the Clemson/GT rivalry.

Best of luck with the search.

Finally, our long torment is over. My vote is for Jim Grobe.

    @ Clemson Joe - Don't forget the GT/FSU dynamic!

    Kevin:
Absolutely. They just don't play each other every year like Clemson/GT. Maybe they'll hire Jeff at Duke (new vacancy), and we can have family affairs all season.

I'm already sick of the "Bowden Bowl" talk for so many years. I really don't want it to start again, but I do think that Terry would be a good fit at GT.

Agreed - Terry would be a great fit at MOST schools. He had some demons, but he's moved on & he's ready to win for somebody. It would be interesting to see him at Mississippi or several other openings.

Bowdon's been out of coaching for over 9 years. Why does anyone think he'd be a good choice to jump right back in, other than his last name is Bowdon?

Don't get me wrong, though. I liked Bowdon when he coached for us...

I wasn't impressed with Terry Bowden's recruiting and developmental skills. He did best with players recruited and developed by his predecessor. Because GT doesn't attract the same level of talent as the surrounding schools, the new HC better have great developmental and motivational skills.

    Two names for this job.

Jon Tenuta, the Def Cord of Georgia Tech.

Then the guy that would put a supply, and demand in ticket sales, Paul Johnson, Head Coach of Navy.

While at Georgia Southern, Johnson was 26-4 with two Division I-AA Championships.

As Navy Head Coach, he's 44-29, and I'm sure that will go to 45-29 after they beat Army this weekend.

This guy knows how to win, and can flat out coach.

Bowden started out like a house afire at Auburn and went downhill from there. Some would argue that he was in the same situation as Less Miles, having the benefit of great players recruited into the program by his predecessor.

I remember that he recruited Martavius Houston promising him he would win 3 Heisman trophies at Auburn then he ended up kicking Houston off the team.

Later Bowden pull a Mike Dubose with his secretary and because he thought the Auburn Administration might be getting rid of him, he left in the middle of his coaching season.

Yeah, let's get Buster Brown back into college football. He was great for comic relief.

#8: I must agree about Tenuta. He's a quality guy who has produced results on the field. He could be an excellent choice for GT.

I don't think Bowdon Dubosed his secretary like some think he did. But she did happen to be the daughter of Auburn chief meddler Bobby Louder. It's assumed that Lowder ran him off. It didn't go down very well--forcing him out after he started the season 1-5. He was only 3-2 against Alabama, which, as you know, is not good enough at Auburn.

The new guy seems to be working out okay though...

Grain of salt.... I'm seeing some posts out there that Nutt will quasi-resign tonight to pursue other opportunities, take a reduced buyout, and be the #1 candidate ASAP at Georgia Tech.

You'll have to admit that he did a great job recruiting that superstar Houston.

SHA: You missed a good story on here back in March concerning the recruitment of Martavious Houston. Here's your link:

    http://www.fanblogs.com/florida_state/006925.php

You were right--what a boring Iron Bowl on Saturday. Neither team really seemed like they wanted to win the game in the 3rd and most of the 4th quarter. The most exciting thing that happened was Sherrod Powers getting bitten by an attack dog in the end zone. One of our dogs, biting our own player. WTF? Why do they even have attack dogs at the game anyway?

It's bad enough that we had to live down Uga V taking a bite at Auburn receiver Robert Baker during the Georgia game in 1996 played on OUR field. Now this...

    WE ATL

Kind of ironic; considering AU is a veterinarian school, and such.

You'd think the puppies, horses, cows and kittens would love AU students.

WEA I read that story. I think that it was on Yahoo.

Yeah, what's the deal with the dogs anyway? It even looked like the officer didn't care that the player had been bitten. Took him some time to move the dog back. It would have been a great time for the entire Auburn team to do a pile on.

Vicious dogs like that have no place at a football game.

Rammer: All the animals love Auburn students except the elephants! :-)

I fired an email to the president of the university today voicing my displeasure. This is Auburn, not Auschwitz. We haven't had anyone run en masse onto the field since the 1986 Georgia game, to my knowledge.

That officer should be disciplined severly for not controlling his dog and for being too close to the field. He was only 2 yards away. And you're right. He didn't act too concerned about it. Can you just imagine the headlines had it been an Alabama player? It would draw parallels in the press of the old Birmingham--Bull Conner attack dogs and water cannons. Just brilliant!

I've never seen dogs in the stadium before. And those didn't look like bomb-sniffing dogs, either. And what are they going to say? We brought in extra 'security' measures for the Alabama game? What does that say about us.

The university should make an apology to everyone who attended, to ESPN for their viewers, to the university of Alabama, and to Jerraud Powers himself. What a disgrace.

If anyone hasn't seen the clip:

Because they fear the Ears, Ron! As in 'Ears' Tuberville, or so they say.

Nah, I'm not a TE--a sore winner. Not going to rub it in. I know what it's like to be on the losing end of that game and it's just plain hateful. Seriously, it puts me in a bad mood for about two weeks. That's why I don't go to all the Iron Bowls any more. It's just unbearable when you lose. At least at home you can drink a few more until you pass out, but being there and walking out of the stadium and hearing all their fans whooping and hollering. I just can't stand it.

That game was up for grabs. Luckily, Auburn wanted it a little bit more.

Boy this thread went dead--kinda like Tech's last half of the season. There's actually a lot of names flying out there for this position--too many.

I think the best pick would be Paul Johnson of Navy. He's got the Georgia connection--having coached under Erk Russell at GA Southern, then taking the reins himself in Statesboro.

Tech has to be careful not to alienate John Tenuta and force him to leave. Johnson would be ideal for Tenuta to serve under until he's ready to test his own wings. If Tech went with another 'name' assistant as HC, Tenuta would leave out of spite. He's the only big name assistant they should look at. He believes that and so do I.

I just don't know enough about the situation to know if he's ready...

    WE ATL

Don't be so hard on the President of AU and the dog.

The dog was only doing what it had been trained to do--Locate drugs--

Did you notice the dog bit him on his "weed smokin'" hand.

    Just kiddin'

LMAO, Rammer! Yea, old Jerraud probably had to go relieve the stress from that bogus pass interference call they hung on him on Bama's only TD drive.

I got an email back from the administration. Bunch of gobble-de-gook crafted by attorneys that doesn't really say anything. I got more of a rise out of them last year when I complained that the thank you letter I received for my donation to the College of Business had letterhead that said "College of Bussiness". Glad my degree had it spelled correctly...

Kevin: Next year we humbly request our very own Iron Bowl thread a week out from the game so we don't have to bastardize any other threads...
