Scheduling Problem: The scoreboard doesn't go that high
Looks like Hawaii is trying to match its wide-open offense against former coach June Jones' new wide-open SMU offense.
University of Hawai'i head football coach Greg McMackin said he is in favor of scheduling Southern Methodist and he and his predecessor, June Jones, have discussed the possibility.
"We'd like to get something going with SMU," McMackin said. "It would be a natural. I'd love for us to compete against one another as two great programs. June and I have talked about that. We'd both love to do that."
Hawaii has one open home date in 2009, two open dates in 2010, and four open slots in 2012.
The potential problem - of course - is that the scoreboards may not be able to accomodate triple digits for either team.
Hawaii was the #37 pass defense last year (but arguably didn't face a substantial pass attack until the bowl game), while SMU was ranked #116 against the pass.
Hawaii is also looking for for scoreboard-buster games against Texas Tech and Utah.

Hawaii football may have its years, like last year, but it’ll never really be a consistent contender until the school improves the facilities for its student athletes. Conditions are terrible. Kevin posted an article to that effect a while back, and I as I understand it, since then conditions haven’t changed much. Who’d want to attend a school as a student, let alone an athlete, where showers are taken in places that look like something out of “Silent Hill” (video game, for those who don’t know)?
Build it; BUILD IT RIGHT; offer great coaching, and they will come.
C-Dogg, my dad was at Pearl some months after the bombing. He said Pearl was a mess, but the rest of the island was beautiful. Though he would likely not recognize it today, I’ve been told it is still a beautiful place to visit, but it is terribly expensive. I can see this being problematic for non-conference home games, but not for recruits; at least not if the school performs the necessary upgrades.

The all-time record: Georgia Tech over Cumberland, 222 - 0 (back in the golden age of leather hat football).
WEA, I remember the old UH run-n-gun with Andre Ware was very effective (back before other teams figured out how to defend against it). I was at the game in Rice Stadium the day Ware won the Heisman and remember wondering why every offense didn't switch to the run-n-gun. Then Spurrier came to UF with the fun-n-gun and on to USC (the cock-n-shoot?). Given the stigma attached to RUTSing, I'd be pretty shocked if any NCAA coach would allow his team to score triple digits in a single game, now.

Ramblin: As a Tech alum, naturally you have the book that was writtem about the Cumberland game, right? I've actually read some of it. For those not inclined, you have the wikipedia version which is actually a very good read:

Yea, I don't think we'll see any BCS teams hanging a hundred on any one anytime soon...
Zac: Was that after the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

WEA, I have "a" book on the GT/Cumberland game, but I think there's more than one. My book is titled You Dropped It, You Pick It Up, though I can't recall the author and I'm posting this from my cell phone inside the Houston airport so it's difficult to look up references at the moment.
Incidentally, the title of that book is reputed to be a quote from one of the Cumberland players, staring at a live ball after a fumble.
