Iowa State lets fans vote on new helmets

The Iowa State Cyclones football team will have a new uniform design next year, but they are putting the new helmet designs online for the fans to vote on.

“It is our goal that the option chosen will allow us to more clearly define our athletics program on a national level,” Pollard said. “These three concepts emerged after thorough discussions with a number of individuals and each of the ideas ties back to our history in its own unique way.”

The Athletics Department will collect input, via online voting, until Friday, Aug. 31. Fans can also vote in person during the department’s annual Cyclone FanFest in the Bergstrom Indoor Practice Facility (1-3 p.m.) on Sunday, Aug. 19. The vote of the fans is a factor that will be weighed in the final decision. The athletics department will announce its final choice later this fall so that production schedules can be met for the 2008 season.

“Asking for input from our fan base is an important part of the design process,” Head Coach Gene Chizik said. “In a political year, you might compare this to a straw poll.”

The new helmet designs feature the more traditional ISU cardinal and gold, at the insistence of new Cyclones coach Gene Chizik, and will be the school's first ever white helmet shells.

IS U Crazy? Does anybody think changing the helmets will actually help "To clearly define our athletics program on a national level?"

Try winning a couple games to get some recognition. A wardrobe change does not change talent. I'm still laughing!

Dudes and dudettes...Iowa State ain't gone be a good team. They have to do this to get not only the fans involved but attention! I personally hate white helmets. Even Stevie Wonder can see how silly this outfit look. Hey Gene, worry about WINNING first. The only thing that is going to happen in 2008, Iowa State is gone lose but now they will look U-G-L-Y doing it. Stick wit ya current gear, wear the cardinal pants with white jerseys and your white pants with cardinal jerseys. Schedule some good opponents and win! But dig this Iowa State fans...he'll quite after 3 years of losing and the next coach will get rid of 'em!

I agree with you, these are the ugliest helmets in college football. The school colors are cardinal and gold, and that is what the athletic director said he wanted I am not sure what happened. I hope he is paying attention because the majority of cyclone fans do not want these helmets.

Top Ten Ugliest Helmets and/or Jerseys in 2007:

    1)Oregon - Jerseys only
    2)Oregon State - Jerseys only
3)Iowa - Going with the Gold Pants? Getting Ready for 2008?
4)Kansas - New York Giants wannabes!
5)Florida State - Black Jerseys only
6)South Carolina - All Black Setup
7)Texas Tech - All Red Setup!
8)TCU - Those Black Pants with da Purple Tops...Yuck!
9)Michigan - Helmets Only. I know Michigan fans are gonna attack but do they still need those strips on the helmets so the quarterback can see da recievers better?
    10) Any team that still has grey facemasks!

The I-State one is really nice. Their cuurent uniforms now are pretty bad, but only a little tweaking will fix them (going back to the Seneca Wallace uniforms would be nice).

These are ugly, but their current set up of red on red on red with red face masks makes them look like a highschool team. Anything would be an improvement

doesnt this school have an art dept? or did they run out of crayons? are white helmets cheaper? go down to the pigglywiggly and buy a few sharpies, toss the white buckets and sharpies in the monkey pen at the zoo and you would do better. and while we are at it...why do they have a cardinal mascot when they are the pyschlones?

What's wrong with the current uniforms? I guess they think ISU fans won't notice the score board because they are too busy starring at the new uniforms. I get it though ..new coach...new uniforms..new era for ISU? Probably not, I don't think Chizik can get the talent needed to become a major contender. So new uniforms will have to do.

If Iowa State fans are smart they can stop this from happening. They can get the alumni and boosters to stop this. What is Gene thinking? Keep your current gear! Scotty First you are being to polite...this is beyond U-G-L-Y!

Iowa State has been to a bowl game in 5 of the last 7 years and has beaten iowa 6 of the last 9 times they've played. This year they are returning a three-year starting quarterback who has the second or third (not positive) most career passing yards of all college football quarterbacks, a three-year starting wide reciver who has the second most reciving yards of college wide recievers, and the nations leading tackler from last year. This team can win and will win this year. Part of the problem for North teams is that they don't have the speed or strength that the south teams do. Gene Chizik is bringing Texas' assistant strength and conditioning coach from last year and that will help a lot more than people think. If there are no significant injuries this team will contend for the North.

that Iowa States uniforms look suspicously like the outfit Ronald McDonald wears? I personally think any helmet design is an improvement over the twirling pigeon they currently have. They are named the cyclones but they have a parrot on the helmet? Did someone miss a memo?
